What does Benteke thrive on?

Crosses!

Do we get in enough crosses for Benteke to suit us?

I honestly think any striker would struggle up front for us at the moment, no crosses, no slide balls, no counter attacks, no company in the box, no partner, nobody getting to the byline, whole game played in the width of the penalty area, terrible set piece deliveries! No paying upfront for us right now can be no fun!
We crossed the ball 36 times today.

Well he's certainly not going to get the service from Siggy, Lennon and Townsend.

Going forward, we have to build around Lamela and Eriksen because they are the two players who represent our best chance of smart, incisive football and to provide Soldado with at least some sniffs at goal.

The stat of having one pass to Bobby inside the penalty box last weekend is as laughable as it it worrying.
We can't be relying on that degree of precision. We need somebody who can knock a cb off balance with a swing of his backside.

Depends what you call a cross.
Actually 11 were from corners. So that leaves 25.

Well this is one of the virtues of going for a Benteke or Lukaku in that whilst it certainly looks ungainly, it does have it's place in modern footballers much as the pretty tiki taka.

Problem is we've got no plan B - nothing, zilch, nada.

Include free kicks knocked into the box as well plus cut backs etc etc, as far as crosses for a CF to attack go what are you left with?

However our 2nd half performance was much much better and we did get service in plus players, if we could do that regularly and play with that tempo we would score goals!

I only saw about the last 15 minutes do don't believe I can give fair ratings. However, from reading this thread, I get the impression that I could have written a review without even seeing that much.

Friedel can't play this system. If Lloris isn't fit, give Gomes a game.
Walker is fast but lacks brains.
Vertonghen is missed when played out of position but still puts in a good shift.
Dawson has the heart of a lion but I'd too slow, hoof s the ball and makes the odd stupid challenge.
Churches looks classy even though he'd still getting to grips with the league.
Dembele & Paulinho shouldn't play together. They lack defensive strength and attacking flair.
Townsend Get your head up, you're not Bale.
Siggurdson Good shot but went missing.
Eriksen (though it could just as easily be Holtby) OK but didn't do enough. Poor set pieces (this has been the car since well before either joined.
Soldado. Isolated, even with 4 other players within 10 yards of him.
Defoe A poor man's Townsend. Offside, shoots wildly without thinking, disappears.
AVB Frustrates the supporters.

Just as an aside, I watched the game on my own at home & being on my own it was quite quiet.
I'm not prone to talking to myself generally but I realised at half time i'd said two things in 45 minutes:

'Go on Super Jan' (can't remember why, bit embarrassed to have called him 'Super Jan' actually)
'Give it Siggy' (they were phaffing about over a free kick)

At that point I thought i'd note any further outbursts caused by the game, surprisingly there was only one:

'Fucking hell, Defoe, you're a sack of shit' (can't remember the actual incident)

I rest my case, your honour.

Fuck off football. Fuck off life. Fuck off Tim fucking Krul.

First things first.. we actually played better at home today than we have all season and on any given Sunday we would have won handsomely, but for an inspired keeping display and atrocious finishing. That's the positive.

I thought I was a big AVB fan and like a hell of a lot that he brought to the table, however his tactical substitutions are leaving a lot of room for question. The Defoe sub occurred at a point where we were in the ascendency and looking continually dangerous. It was a sub which harked back to the Harry of yesteryear (need a goal, put a striker on) and ended up with the predictable situation of the increasingly influential Eriksen bunted out wide left and us failing to provide any sort of service for our two uber-strikers.

Service and productivity are our lacking points and we have Townsend with no goals (that cross at Villa doesnt count) and no assists from ten games and Siggy with a few more goals but similar assists. Lamela has to play. Immediately.

Playing Dembele as a holding midfielder makes no sense what so ever.

Friedel - 5 - Looked 42. Lloris would have made a better fist of the goal. Fluffed at every cross.

Walker - 7 - Decent but his final ball was average at best.

Verts - 7 - No grumbles but did get skanked once by Sissokho

Dawson - 6 - Remy gave him the run around first half.

Vlad - 7 - Good before he went off. Not sure why he had to come off for a blood nose?

Eriksen - 6 - Very poor first half but grew into the game. Appalling miss from 6 yards.

Paulinho - 4 - Sorry, I cant forgive that limp wristed, powder puff attempt at a tackle which led to the goal. Absolute bottle job. His finishing was woeful. He is starting to worry me.

Dembele - 4 - His fucking about led to the goal, not once but twice. I watched him closely first half and he was dropping so deep he may as well have been playing sweeper. Dawson even told him to push up at one point.

Siggy - 5 - At his weak and peripheral best.

Townsend - 5 - Predictable dribbling. Even more predictable shooting from 35 yards. I would bet my bottom dollar that if you gave Lamela 10 lots of 90 minutes then he would give more than one fluke goal and no assists.

Soldado - 7 - Unlucky a few times. Much more involved and chased every lost cause.

Sandro - 8 - You need to earn the right to play and this lad earns enough for the whole team. No idea why he didn't start.

Kaboul - 7 - Not really tested as the Barcodes dropped off but I would have him over any of our CBs.

Defoe - 4 - Defoe.

Fuck off.

Maybe they are Yes-Men. How could any assistant watch that crap week in, week out and not have a quiet word?

Someone commented that Freund has been moved into the background. Is there any truth in that?

They must be Yes men because the guy sitting next to AVB is the one he physically shoved away from him during a game.
If he had done that to me he would have been eating through a straw for about 6 months.:)

Freund definitely sits as far away from AVB as possible and there is no eye contact between them.

Friedel - had little to do but still made a meal of it. 5
Walker - got forward put offered zero threat - 5
Dawson - how many square balls or long passes does this guy do per game? - 5
Vlad - did well - 7
Verts - not a left back but did well 7
Sig - piss poor as usual, no pace, no strength, no guile. Can anybody tell me how he gets a game? 3
Eriksen - absolutely must score those type of chances, yes a good save but the keeper shouldn't have been given the opportunity to get anywhere near it. 6
Paul - looks knackered already, time to warm some wood me thinks. Terribly at fault for their goal too 4
Dembele - rightly subbed at half time, nuff said 3.
Townsend - one of the most frustrating players I've ever seen. You ain't bale mate so stop acting like you are. Needs to be dropped ASAP as he offers nothing 3
Soldado - so sad to see him so isolated but brilliant dummy for the eriksen chance 7

Subs - sandro 8, Kaboul 7, Defoe not even worth a rating.

AVB - needs to take the blame for this one. No lamela? Seriously WTF? Holtby played well last week but dropped this week?
