I agree with what you're saying and it's the reason why I've wanted us to try it,, but yesterday it was the wrong way to go I reckon.

Yesterday , I would still say it worked. Both goals were because of FB movement. Moreover Villa played with back 6 which is in any case is difficult to breakdown especially with a out of form striker & no established playmaker.

Not a vintage performance but it was always going to compare unfavourably with the performance that immediately went before this one so whoever was picked was in a no win situation. Being realistic, with the number of changes made I was never expecting a classic, it was a little slow to get going but the team did a professional job and did what was expected of them, overcoming a stubborn team set out to play one way.

Two very well worked and well taken goals and a clean sheet and a place in the next round, no new injuries sustained, it's a shame Janssen could not find the net from open play so the wait goes on, but we can't have everything, so nearly all objectives achieved, onto the next task, tackling a Pulis team that will also be stubborn to break down and in contrast to Villa, they will be more of a threat in attack. So again we may have to be patient and even more watchful, but then we will have more of our regulars coming back in to deal with the task ahead, so bring it on.

3-4-2-1 suits Alderweireld, Vertonghen and Dier since they're all good at joining up with the midfield and create situations where we can overload opponents.

CCV is a young player, and he'lll naturally be a bit more reserved in his game, focusing on defending well. Wimmer is a decent passer, but not on for marauding runs like Vertonghen. When we sum that up, we were at times yesterday 3 v. 1, and the 1 being Agbonlahor.

When we add Davies to the equation (he's a good attacking left back, but thrives on coming from deep, not being set up 1v1), it's not too strange that we struggled somewhat. I reckon Poch could foresee that as well, but wanted to give all of Wimmer, CCV, Trippier and Davies a game, and also have Alderweireld in case thing got out of hand.

With Dier in central midfield and able to drop deep and split the 2 centrebacks making a 3 we didn't need 3 centrebacks was my view. (Against Championship opposition)

The fullbacks could still have got forward but we could have played another player further up the pitch as well. E.g. GNK or Onomah getting a start.

If Wednesday's side was our best eleven it's fair to say this clearly wasn't and yet it was never a struggle, we completely dominated and eventually won quite easily, no disrespect to Aston Villa but it does show that we have a strong squad.

I remeber watching us play on skysports a couple of years ago and hoddle put what team he'd like to see us play and how.
He put three at the back and many on here slated him for it.

Not saying that it's the wrong system to use just find it funny how the views on this forum change.

Because he put Townsend as a no10...

I don't think we played this system because Poch felt it was the best way to win the game, but because he wanted all/most of our squad to experience playing it in a competitive match. I think he trusted that, however raw this group of players were in the system, we still had enough to win the game and we also had the insurance of changing things if it wasn't working out as we saw.

I think we'll see more and more of this formation and he wants everyone to be as comfortable as as they can if/when they are called upon.

bring on n'jie
On a serious note - Clinton N'jie had a whole season in England where he played a few times, got to know the squad and made some decent cameos.
Given our struggles up front without Kane, I think he'd have been a decent option. Granted Pochettino played him behind the striker and usually on the left but he looks like he could do a job up front with his pace.

Sadly I suspect his short spell at Spurs is over as Marseille have an option to buy and he's not doing rubbish (but not amazing either).

Both goals came after we took Toby off and put GKN on, changing the formation to 4-2-3-1.

Some people are getting far too obsessed with this 3 at the back without actually understanding much about it.

Exactly. I'm amazed anyone who saw the whole game couldn't see that. There are some games where things look right in hindsight, but in this case every single person in the ground around me could see the same thing from 20 minutes in.

Yes, i got that. Was just making a joke about people posting vague stuff assuming that everyone knows what they are talking about.

Bit like the cameron story yesterday.

.........and his everyday of the week!

I wonder how many times pundits and commentators, give those who were unable to watch a particular match, false statements by misrepresenting the facts, either to support a particular agenda or just being plain dumb. I was listening to Danny Murphy and Mark Segars on Talksport where they both were going wax lyrical over the fact that Dele came on and changed the game, no mention of the tactical change of formation or contribution by N'koudou.

I watched the match again just to be sure, as while Ali did contribute to our improving our play offensively, the game changed when Toby was taken off and N'Koudou was brought on. I would even go as far to argue that GKN (and Poch) had more to do with us winning that game than anyone else on the pitch.

Wasn't the seats I was talking about I just meant in general all you could hear was the villa support

They were really vocal for about the first 15 minutes and almost got bored of themselves in the second half. Same 3 songs over and over again. No player songs. It was pretty monotonous.
