Erik Lamela is frustrated at being Tottenham’s only injured player and has returned to former club AS Roma to undergo treatment, according to manager Mauricio Pochettino.

How strange is that?

Having re-read the article about 5 times I think I get it.

Bit depressed, needs a change of scenery, likes it in Rome.

Nice of them to take him i guess. Still a bit weird.

Everywhere we go, we always take Lamela with us. Just happen to be going to Rome.

Obviously there's a genuine injury but I suspect there maybe a contract dispute going on behind the scenes. Lamela's the only player at Spurs Poch has neither signed or given an improved contract to. I stand to be corrected but I suspect he may have been told he won't be given a new one. Poch is gushing in his praise of players like Kane, Alli, Rose and others. He's never really gone overboard about Lamela though.

I think there's more to it than a simple injury.
Nothing may come of it but this is the 2nd time since he arrived that he's fallen off the face of the universe. Maybe he's just prone to home sickness and gets a bit of special treatment.

According to our Official Site:-

Mauricio explained: “Erik is close but he’s a little frustrated at the moment.

“The team is showing big energy, it’s a special moment and it’s tough for him. He wants to be out there. He has asked to spend some time away and he’s gone to Roma with our staff to finish his recovery.

“Hopefully after that he’ll be available and start to work again with the team.”

I'm not sure I like this really.

I get that he's frustrated, but now is a great time to be around a positive squad, and he should be showing his support to the team not heading off elsewhere.

Obviously this is said without the medical/personal facts so I'll temper my chagrin a little, but he should really be staying at Spurs if possible.

some injuries take longer the colder it is, but would it be much warmer in Rome?

I know i suffer with the cold weather more

He would struggle to get in the current side now even if he was fit anyway. Poch won't be changing much over the rest of the season if our current form continues. There is no justification to change a five game winning streak starting eleven.

It seems he has faith in a physio in Rome who helped him recover from his back injury in 2014.
I guess he (like Poch) only expected a few weeks out, which has again turned into a few months out.
Sounds like he's a bit depressed not playing, but his twitter account suggests he enjoyed the Chelsea win.
Hopefully he will be back for the run in; I doubt the "five game winning streak starting eleven" can play every game til May!
Coincidentally he was talking up a new deal after the last game he played, only to get injured in training, and so that's probably not a priority for him now (I believe he's already a high earner) nor the club (since it's been reported he has 18 months left plus a further 2 year option they can extend).

Must be hard being the only one in the treatment room, no friends to banter with or help push the recovery. Must kinda feel like being ostracised from the team but not being the actual case. Makes sense to let him have a break, see friends and get healthy. The trip to Argentina would have obviously been stressful, seeing your brother fight for his life, every day.

He'll come back healthier and happier and it will be like a January signing :)

But it's not the same starting XI, is it?
Lamela is always welcome in the squad. Massive energy and effort.

Poch won't change a winning side, injuries and suspensions aside. Fact.

He'll tinker with the formation depending on the opposition. He won't play 3 at the back against WBA so I expect Son or Sissoko to come in for Dier, but I think, even when fit, Lamela's fallen out of the core group of players and may be this year's Bentaleb.
