Well what a surprise, Bayern are already all over a deal for him. Another name that can probably be chalked off.

As already mentioned, we most likely need to be looking a tier down.... Haller, Jovic, Pepe, Sarr, Bowen, Malcom etc and hope they develop. Yes we have had our fingers burnt with Janssen but unfortunately that can happen. Once a player has built any kind of reputation, we are way behind in the queue to sign them up.

It's frustrating and can't blame Poch for wanting to pick from the higher tier but really feels as though we have reached an impasse and
the worry is it will soon begin to hurt us.

Bayern get away with murder. Same happened with Pavard. It's ridiculous the amount of players they've ripped from other german clubs.

Herc suggesting in the De LongDong Jong thread that the financials are difficult to balance for Werner. I wonder if they become more possible if one of our targets is French, frustrated in Paris and running down his contract? Too many rainbow wishes probably but I’ll go sleepy bobos on that thought

I think if we spend none of our budget on any players then it’ll be like having a new signing without having a loan back or any of that Rubbish. Phew. Sorted.:D

Timo is the most realistic marquee signing in the market ATM, Levy should bite the bullet get Werner and spend money on a reasonable CM.

Embarrassing...dont want to spend most of our budget, we didnt spend anything in the summer and are likely to only buy 1 player in the window, why not spend the full budget on a difference maker? Not just now but for years to come.

so 80 million plus a decent CM on loan till the end of the season we sign him up in summer could be in the budget ?

We need a really good central mid now though, we needed one in the summer and even more so with the depature of Dembele.

I agree with spending cash though.

There are barely any out there at this current time this is why we are being linked with Berge who is touted as a wonderkid yet hasn't played in elite football. one individual that did exite me was Kessie and someone who I would go all out to get is neves but it wouldn't happen.

Not sure he is that much realistic compared to the other players we've had links with to be honest. Young German international whose contract is running down so his value reflects that. Then we have Bayern, the biggest team in Germany which has an ageing squad who don't go out spending the real big money and have been hoovering up the young up German talent. He will end up there in the summer and even if we agreed a fee with Leipzig, he won't be interested in coming as long as Bayern want him and will sit it out till the summer.

So we're interested, he's a star in the making, he's 22, he can cover for Kane and play anywhere across the front, his value will quickly double if he does well, and he's expensive but affordable. Just fucking sign him. Or we can daydream about players who will never come, while our injury list gets longer and our rivals get stronger.

I'm not surprised. We can't sign players like Werner, De Jong and Ndombele because their valuation has sky rocketed. We have to get players before their value goes through the roof. I think a more realistic target to De Jong/Ndombele is someone like Berge. Not sure on an alternative to Werner though, maybe an attacking midfielder like Malcom/James seems more realistic because you dont have the issue of convincing them to warm the bench for Kane. If we have a limited budget I would be looking at Berge and Malcom/James now and go for one big signing in the summer.

Surely that’s not how we do deals tho, or hasn’t been before?? ie we don’t pay in one lump sum. If our budget is £100mill, Werner is quoted at £70-£80mill, then a lump of £40-£50mill with add ons (say £10mill for winning something this year, £2mill for top 4 end of season etc etc) over the contract that take it to the quoted price. Or do we not do this anymore?

Maybe/probably I’m getting this wrong, but it doesn’t make sense to me to just rule ourselves out, seeing as we will earn more money for the pot over the time of his contract.

Meh, I don’t know, I guess we’re hoping the transfer prices will will blow out again (as they did a few years back) and we can go about buying very good players for £20-£30mill again. Problem being, I don’t see it stopping any time soon. We’re just shit out of luck that the prices have gone crazy just as we’re building a new stadium.

We don’t want to spend 80% of our budget on one player, so instead we’ll spend 0% of our budget bringing in zero players.

Great.

Is this realistic? I think it should be. Financially the alternative of NOT ending up as top 4 now might be much worse. We must seize the opportunities and the moment. I think it's now or never for Spurs. Would be a pitty to see us ending on a 6th-7th place the next seasons. A striker is vitable now. After all it's possible to sell him later on. That's all I have to say! ?

Obviously Timo Werner would be a huge addition, but there are other talents in the Bundesliga who could improve the squad if Werner goes to Pool or Bayern, which seems likely. Julian Brandt at Leverkusen has always been a decent fit for us on paper and I was sad to see him extend out his contract a few years back. Plays in a similar role to Sonny as a LF, effective cutting in from the wing as an inside forward, effective bringing the ball forward from midfield, but has a bit of physicality to his game and not terrible at holding the ball up, so he could potentially play as a false nine or cover up the middle. Leverkeusen are tanking and potentially out of Europe next year. In terms of straight line pace I don't think Brandt and Werner are too far off and I don't think one would necessarily stretch the field more than the other. But Brandt has that positional versatility that Poch loves.

Nicolas Pepe has had a monster year in Ligue 1 and could have potentially at least approaching that of Ousmane Dembele. Heck I would even take a punt on Joelinton of Hoffenheim. Same story. Could play across the forward line. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Joelinton go to Wolves or Watford like Richarlison and become a $60 million player . Breakout year and like Brandt and Werner he's only 22.

Point being I'm not bent out of shape about Werner, specifically, so much as the general principle of not buying in two consecutive windows to improve squad depth.

Pepe and Bamba are fantastic talents for Lille, Pepe espechially will be chased by everyone end of season. As per usual there are a lot of interesting talents in France. I would also say it’s incredibly likely that Monaco will go down so we should certainly look to a pick some meat from their bones.

Would have loved to pick the bones from a relegated Monaco two summers ago. They wound up with a horde of players we used to be linked to like Keita Balde, Ben Heinrichs, Youri Tielemans. Now it's hard to find a player on that roster who jumps out. I am still a believer in Teilemans' potential, and would be excited to get him, but admittedly he's been awful this season. I'm assuming the door has slammed shut between Spurs' hierarchy and Keita Balde's entourage...
