Time to introduce "effective playing time" in football

One thing football should adapt to avoid rampant time-wasting is "effective playing time". That would solve the problem with time-wasting as there would be no gains in it at all.
They could have 2 x 30 or 35 minutes halfs.

Below is a report by Alex Stone about how must time is being "wasted" during this World Cup...

All it will do is get the unfit players faking injury to prolong the game and get more rest time. Could end up with games like the NFL that last hours due to constantly being stopped.

Of course rules to prevent that has to be applied.
In NFL they hardly play at all anyway, not to speak of the last hour

Why not just have rules to prevent timewasting as it is now? Seems a simpler solution than having a new system to them implement rules that could be used just now.

Effective playing time, IMO, would be the best. What efficient rules are there agains time-wasting that has been implemented so far that you know of...?

Meh, just force time-wasting players to run a post match gauntlet of landmines. Either that or an ultra crazy version of Takeshi's Castle.

Totally agree. The average "in play" time for a PL match is around 60min, which is ridiculous.

Back pass was one that I can think of right away.

But my point was there will still be time wanting to prolong a game if it's a set time to play, what ever they use to enforce that doesn't happen could just be used now without the need to change the format drastically.

I think it's worth having a serious trial in various competitions such as the league cup. Obviously it would be a monumental shift in the game, but teams have gotten so damn good at wasting time that something should be done.

It's long overdue IMO but you'd have to have 30min halves otherwise the game would go on too long. I don't think faking injury to get "rest" would really happen much if at all to be honest.

This assumes that time wasting is merely about running the clock down, whereas in reality it is often more about disrupting the flow of the game or the other teams momentum.

Part of the game for me & it's up to the Ref's to monitor & deal with it, either by booking players or adding on lots of time.

All for this. 60 minute ball in play stadium clock, controlled externally of the ref. No more bollocks "Fergie time". Everyone knows exactly where they stand.

Doesn't this only address the time the ball is out of play? There's nothing to prevent teams from just keeping possession without trying to attack.
