I was at the Dortmund game on Wednesday and it was clearly brilliant. But, as I always do, on leaving the stadium, I read the BBC live text and checked out the SC match thread to see if my experience was shared.

I was a little surprised to read all the unanimous praise that spewed forth. I’ve often read people asserting that they understood the game better because they were there, and it got me thinking about how often I’ve been and how often I disagree with the general opinion with those that watched it on tv.

Before I start, my conclusion is that those who are at the game do not have a better understanding and I will vote for ‘not there’ when I finish waffling and work out how to post a poll.

It was fairly well documented that we struggled first half and only took control when when we came out for second half. I agree with that. But I never felt like we were going to win 3-0. It didn’t feel like that sort of game. It felt like the sort of game where we would get sucker-punched in the balls in the last minute. But we banged in two in the last ten minutes and we all went fucking mental; it was, as I said, clearly brilliant ?

There was a nervousness in the ground. Probably because we were there and would be the ones to experience the pain if it all went tits up, I suppose.

I thought Aurier was scarily bad but only found out he provided an assist when I left, for instance..

Anyway, who knows more:

1. Those that were there.
2. Those who were not there.

I’ll vote ‘not’ because they get to see replays.

I'm going with secret option no. 3 - neither (I voted for both)

I believe that each view provides a different perspective on the game, but each is equally valid.

I know - I'm awkward. :shy:

Obviously the match thread kneemeisters provide an in depth knowledge and insight that is unparalleled anywhere else :sneaky:

Who knows more? Well, not me for a start and I've been to more Spurs games than some of you have had bunkups. There is no one who knows more. Yes, I know there's a few who like to think they do, both in the match thread and at the game itself but nah, there's just 1001 onions.

It's fair to say that you do get a different perspective whether you're at the match or not.

I often read the match day thread and think 'blimey, you're not all there, are you?'

Well, in defence of my 'PC' view, I think it can be argued that it's not just football that it applies to. It's a question of perspective. In anything, what one is involved in will present one perspective and the same thing observed will present another.

And ultimately, football isn't a game of numbers. It's not a quantitative thing, it's a qualitative one. Asking who knows more is like asking, "which is bigger: blue or green?"

Neither knows better.

On tv you don't see some of the work off the ball that some players do or some of the in game adjustments that are made. For example I know someone who thinks Dele does nothing and is all shapes and tricks. If he went to a game he'd understand exactly what Dele does.

At the match you don't see replays or certain other things that might impact the game.

Your opinion of the people who post here is always so bloody cynical!

“I’m surrounded by morons,” said A and C (the man who runs this website and then rolls his eyes at the shit they so spew forth)

It's difficult, on the one hand if you watch on TV with 0 outside sources or the commentary then you can get your own feel for the game, sometimes I think people are influenced by the general mood be it forums, commentators trying to build a story narrative to get the audience engaged or chatting to your friends.

I find when I watch on TV that I shit myself more about players receiving passes in tighter areas and I'm not sure if it's because of the 2D nature of television but when live you really grasp the level that these professionals are at, I feel like you can feel the momentum shift pretty evenly on both but television is so much easier for referee decisions, deflections etc with all the angles you get.

Personally I think it's pretty even and there's advantages and disadvantages to both but people that go to games like to swing their dicks around a bit and fair play to them as they're going out of their way to support the team.

If the commentary teams or pundits were any good - I would say “not there” as you would get insights and the camera angles.

But being part of it, being there you get the sense of the game more. You can see more too (in regards to the patterns of play). Yeah you might miss a few details but I think your more informed being there and experiencing it than being shown what the tv wants to show.

Might significantly change with VAR.

whether in person or on TV the perspective is limited by the brain interpreting it.

thats not meant to be a dig at anyone, btw.

Being at the game is always best, but with the caveat of where you're seated. I always go east upper (or wembly equivalent) on the halfway line so I always get a good view of the game. If you're right down the front, behind the goal or corner flags, its really hard to guage what's going on sometimes.

Honestly think the people that post most frequently in match threads would be better off actually watching the game and keeping their terribly important opinions to themselves until at the very least the match has fucking finished.

It's great reading the often overly pessimistic, knee-jerky shite minute by minute. Its like having a more opinionated BBC Live text if the guy in charge of updates was mentally unstable.

IMO being there would give a better understanding of the game, seeing the whole pitch away from camera views would personally give me a better feel of what's happening.

You're right btw, Aurier was fucking shite apart from one cross.
