The way Murray talks he tennis career might not go on much longer. His hip just be bad

Yeah I think if he can't play much this year he'll retire. Completely outplayed today supposedly

The first set was tight, and he looks to me to be moving much better than when he came back last year, especially when just walking where the limp is very much reduced.

We should see how he's doing with a few more matches under his belt. He could do with a kind draw in the Oz Open, though, cos there are a lot of players who would beat him right now.

Federer / Zverev is going to be interesting today. It's only the Hopman Cup, but they'll both be looking to make a statement before the Aussie Open. My money's still on Fed, but ...

This doesn't make good reading for Murray fans.

Andy Murray's expectations 'tempered' before Australian Open

e.g.
He remains in pain, both after matches and some training sessions. His lateral movement has suffered, especially out wide to the forehand. And those who have seen him get out of a car say he looks quite a bit older than his 31 years.

It is as we feared

Andy Murray says Australian Open could be his last tournament

Britain's Andy Murray says he plans to retire after this year's Wimbledon but fears next week's Australian Open could be the final tournament of his career.

The three-time Grand Slam winner, who is struggling to recover from hip surgery, was in tears as he spoke to journalists in Melbourne on Friday.

"I'm not sure I'm able to play through the pain for another four or five months," said the Scot.

"I want to get to Wimbledon and stop but I'm not certain I can do that."

Sad. But a great player in an era of the greatest.

He'll go down as a British sporting great who excelled in one of the strongest periods of men's tennis.

Gutting news but a truly groundbreaking player in British tennis, and British sport in general.

Two Wimbledon titles, one US Open and two Olympic Golds, in the strongest era of top level tennis we may ever have seen with Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

Surprised by how moved I was watching that press conference, when Murray first came on the scene I didn't care for him much because of the way he carried himself on court, with the shouting at his box and such. But, over the years, hearing him talk off court, you realise that was all just passion and a will to win. To be able to have won three grand slams in arguably the greatest ever era of men's tennis is a testament to that. Hopefully, he has inspired a generation of players, so that we don't have to wait another 77 years for a British man to win Wimbledon.

Utter shame...
I had seriously hoped like Federer and Nadal and Djoko he would come back post injury and still have a good end of career, perhaps even grab another Slam.

If this is goodbye, then he deserves all the accolades. A great competitor and a true british sporting legend in THE most outrageous era in men's tennis.

Such a shame he's retiring so early - but not unnexpected. Will probably go down as someone who should have won more but both unlucky in terms of injuries and also the quality of other players on the tour in his prime. It's not likely that someone of Murray's ability will have to contend with Federer, Nadal and Djokovic at the same time.

I was never a bit fan of watching his atitude (moaning and shouting at his team) and his more defensive playing style (standing far from the baseline, not as much power on returns, relying on speed to wear down etc) compared to Federer's classy-looking, precise cross-court attack or Nadal's power and spin, but he was clearly a great player who adapted well to try and overcome the phenomenal players that he was battling for the grand slams and he succeded three times. He's also the only person to have two Olympic gold medals in singles tennis - Djokovic only has one bronze - and is joint fourth in the overall Olympic tennis medals winners list.

Hopefully he can battle through the pain and have one last go at Autralia and Wimbledon - or even Queens would be a great one to see him win again.

Feel really sorry for him, can only echo what others have said. Such a shame especially as it's fantastic for the game to have him, Federer, Nadal and Djokovic competing at the top.

I know people think he's miserable and not very likeable and such, my parents don't like him because of how he comes over in matches but they haven't seen what he says in interviews, conferences or via social media in between and he comes across a really decent bloke.

He's achieved so much though, even as a British player, to have just won two Wimbledon's would have been amazing.

Man's a legend in his sport, to have done so much with the competition around him. His style of play has ultimately got the better of him, and I hope it's not caused him health issues for after the game ends.

Gonna miss him, his matches were always entertaining!

It's used far to often but he will go down as a legend of British sport. It's incredible sad that injuries have got the best of him but as he himself has said he has to think about his quality of life after Tennis.

It's an incredible haul for any sportsmen/tennis player and the fact that he's British and done it with humility and emotion, I must confess to being a bit emotional with him in the possible retirement announcement. Best British player ever and will be Sir Andy at some point
