I've only seen players shout at the umpire once or twice, never to the extent that she did and each time they received a warning for abusive language, same as she did. Her coach admitted coaxhing, the racket break is a standard penalty, she doesn't have a leg to stand on IMO. Can't believe she hasn't issued a formal apology to the umpire yet.

Figuratively speaking of course, 'cos if there's anyone who's got legs to stand on ...

If they have a schedule and running behind they would be hurrying any players off the pitch, just happened to be the woman's doubles that were on before.

The men's final is the one that draws in more viwers as far as I can tell and crouds so it's not sexist to put that on last, they want people to stay and watch other games until that's on and finished instead of going home.

The men play 5 sets and draw in more sponsorship and revenue IMO so the pay difference is correct. I wouldn't expect to be paid the same as another male or female if I was doing less in a job than then, tennis is no different and as soon as something goes against what they want it is far too easy to throw the race and sexism cards out, which then harms any true issues.

All arguable certainly (although the behind schedule argument is quite a lazy one...they could have let them go for 10 minutes) but I think saying there is no sexism in tennis is very simplistic.

But as I said that's why this whole Serena thing is very irritating because she's effectively boiling it down to, "you criticised a woman therefore you were sexist" which is just ridiculous and stops the more nuanced arguments about sexism in the game.

One of the things annoying me about the pro-Williams camp is they've made the discussion be about sexism rather than what it should be about - poor umpiring.

Carlos Ramos is known for being strict and has handed punishments to male and female players. So while some male players have got away with doing the same as Williams that's on those umpires who didn't act and they should be held to account. Ramos shouldn't be tarred as a sexist because he's enforcing the rules. Williams made three code violations and received three penalties. That's fair umpiring.

Yup agreed, Williams should be kicking off at her coach, who has accepted the charge of coaching from the stands. She then smashed her racquet... obvious violation... she then got angry and called the umpire a liar and a thief. Now perhaps not in usual society, but the rules in tennis state that verbal abuse includes bringing an official, opponent or even a spectators integrity into question... so she broke that rule too.. that's three violations, warning - point - game.

This is a non story, it's just because Serena got all uppity and brought sexism into it that it's made news. If she hadn't, the news would be "Tennis superstar has meltdown on court"

I feel sorry for Osaka

thats one way of looking at it, but the umpire hasn't been consistant with his violations for men & women.

Has the umpire been consistent with his violations between men and men and/or women and women? Or is he treating players differently regardless of sex, age, colour etc.

so if he didnt have an issue with Williams, he is just simply a shit umpire?

eitherway not good and can see why Williams but upset.

Where's the inconsistency? He had Djokovic in a rage once after giving him a warning and then gave him a points violation. I think Nadal has issue with him too.

I don't necessary think he's a bad umpire, I think he's a disciplinarian for the rules, whereas the others are more lenient. Maybe it's the others that are shit?

Either way my personal thoughts on the matter are if that was Nadal, and he'd been coached, then broke his racquet then called the umpire a liar and a thief, the outcome would have been the same. Would we have been shouting sexism then?

He followed the correct rules and issued a warning, he wasn't being a shit umpire.

If that was in football and say a player kicked out at a player, got a booking and then kicked the ball away and got a red card, is that the ref being shit? Or following the rules?

Williams can be upset, but the manor she handled it was wrong and with what she has said after also.

Dumb crowd at the O2 booing Zverev. Support Federer if you want, but that was just stupid.

And damn good win by Sascha. Can't see him getting any change out of Djokovic though.

Fantastic win, he played at such a high level today and was consistent with his play. Really hope we see him competing right at the top again next year. Can't wait for the Australian Open! It's good to know there's someone else that can put on a competitive final against the top, being Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. Others may get there like Cilic and Anderson, but they almost always fall short. Del Potro would be up there if he could stay fit and maybe Thiem but he seems to have stalled a bit.

Felt sorry for him yesterday as the boos really got to him. Idiots in the crowd. He's still so young so no surprise he felt a bit down.

With Lendl on board, I'll be surprised if he isn't a slam finalist at least next year.

Absolutely, it would almost be disappointing if he's not, without trying to be harsh. And yeah you're right, Lendl on board is the key, because he has all the tools, he just needs someone to keep him straight.

Good to see a different name lifting some big silverware.

He’s looking the best of the next generation but is still yet to prove himself in the slams (only made it as far as quarters once).

Finding it hard to get excited about any of the next generation.

He’s a great player, just needs to learn to manage himself in a two week tournament/Grandslam.
