As an aside to my article above I remember in the early seventies when Bill Nicolson got so frustrated by the regular first teamers he dropped 4/5 of them and replaced them by members of our reserve team (yep a proper reserve team playing in the Football Combination) including Tony Want, Terry Naylor, Ray Evans, Dennis Bond and Jimmy Neighbour. These players were 20 or so years of age who went on to have excellent careers with Spurs and elsewhere. Nostalgia is not like it used to be!

That was in January 1970 and marked the end of Jimmy Greaves' time at Tottenham. It was after an FA Cup defeat in a replay at Palace. Steve Perryman, in his debut season in the first team was also left out but he was being rested after a hectic few months for him, playing in the League and also for the U-18 FA Youth Cup winning team. John Pratt was also promoted to the first team but within a few weeks all of the first team regulars returned apart from Jimmy.

I remember it well and the heartbreak and shock of Jimmy leaving WHL.

Looks like Everton are certainly throwing some money at their youth. Was it confirmed they signed one from us. Cannot remember the name began with F. Forsun or something like that

Could you ever imagine 2 English players 5 years ago being in the team of a week for a foreign league. Let alone 2 youngsters. I know Mount would have been in them loads last year, but it can only be good for English football.

This is from a very kind Dutch fan

Comment in AD Sportwereld report on the Heerenveen match:
"Maar het was vooral Marcus Edwards die Excelsior wat extra's gaf. 'Mini-Messi' wordt de 19-jarige huurling van Tottenham Hotspur genoemd. En met elke wedstrijd die hij speelt in Nederland wordt meer duidelijk waarom. Klein is hij, linksbenig, en hij dribbelt makkelijker en sneller dan menig amateurvoetballer rent. Als hij de bal had, zag je de verdedigers van Heerenveen soms al verschrikt een stapje naar achteren doen."

"But above all it was Marcus Edwards who gave Excelsior something extras.
'Mini-Messi' the 19-year-old mercenary of Tottenham Hotspur is called. And with every game he plays in the Netherlands, it becomes more clear why. He is small, left legged, and dribbles easier and faster than many amateur footballers run. When he had the ball, you sometimes saw the defenders of Heerenveen already a bit frightened take a step back."

Great little review and he's clearly impressing the Dutch, which is why Ajax wanted him too

Highlights of the U23's 0-6 loss to Everton

I really think our keeper was at fault for all of those goals

Think that's a bit harsh. The first two are very poor from the keeper but after that he's left horribly exposed.

I just hope, if he manages to continue to grow and has a good campaign, that he can actually get a shot here next season. I'm not really sure of his contract situation or what is actually going on with him and management, but it would be stupid to sell him if he proves himself in Holland.

I think Edwards would be a perfect impact sub. Considering our range of AM it seems silly to spend £50m on another, when it could be much better spent on a striker or CM. Just hypothetically a bench of : gazza sanchez davies winks edwards Son striker. That would be a top bench imo. And if he continues to shine there’s no question he would cost £20-25m to buy in current market. You’d have to put his price tag on a par with someone like Grealish. That’s as long as he keeps this form going. It’s all been really negative for him last 18 months. Who knows what a bit of confidence could do for him.

He's not going to sign a new deal at Spurs though is he? If he does well out there he'll be off in the Summer to one of their clubs or perhaps a German outfit.

I used to be really optimistic reading this thread with our exciting youth - back then we had Bentaleb, Mason and Kane coming through with likes of Winks, Edwards, Onomah, Sterling and Kyle Walker-Peters coming through.

Nowadays I tend to feel sad and concern that we'll continue to lose promising players who could be doing a better job in first team squad.

Walker-Peters for me isn't being blooded properly or given a fair crack thus far. I fear we'll lose him whereas I feel he should be given a run (look at how Carr was a little shakey at first and then his second season onwards he was immense).

The Edwards situation is not necessarily our fault as he has had application issues, but then maybe we should have sent to a Dutch team sooner. I can see him being successful but probably not with us now sadly.

Sterling I believe is injured but I'm just not confident he'll get bench time over Llorente, which he really should be getting.

Onomah is an enigma whether good enough but we haven't picked his loans very well as should be stipulating he is to be played in his proper midfield position or we recall him.

We shall see with Skipp and Amos (Skipp I would really like to see break through) whether they are given opportunities and also TOB seems to have disappeared.

I hope I'm wrong but our youth set-up doesn't seem as positive as it was a couple of seasons back.

From the videos I've seen of Edwards in Holland he looks dangerous and more poised, unselfish and productive than I've seen from him, though I've not seen all his games in youth teams. Really hope he can have a good season and come back to us with fresh attitude and dedication.

FIFA have agreed to change the rules on loans to stop stockpiling of players. Could be a fire sale at Chelsea when this goes through

Do you know what the new rules are? I haven't heard about this.
The proposal is for a max of eight players over 21 out on loan at any time. Still no restrictions on U21 loans.

Chavs currently have 40 players out on loan, 27 (!) of which are over 21.

If he continues to do well in Holland then I can see Edwarsa being used as a makeweight in a deal with Ajax for one of their promising players. This is probably the best we can hope for as I’d be shocked if he signed a new deal with us

Its an improvement but it doesn't go anywhere near far enough.
