For Skipp think someone like Lucas Leiva at Pool. A defensively solid recycler. Can drop into CB if need be (not the tallest though), can play slightly further forward as balance to a more offensive central partner.

Roles isn't flashy like Edwards and he's not dynamic like TOB, he's very much someone who plays a fairly simple game linking things up and just has a habbit of making perfectly time late runs into the box & despite not being huge he seems to have a good leap on him which makes him a threat at set-pieces. He's the sort of player its easy for oppositions to overlook and 90 minutes later he's got a hatrick.
Is Roles sort of Lampard like? No bells and whistles, not a great athlete, but just has timing and composure?

Also, regarding Jack Roles, with the stats posted the other day when he signed his new deal, why isn't he talked about in the same way as the likes of Edwards

for the same reason clint dempsey has never been spoken about in the same way as david silva, he may put up impressive numbers but you only have to watch them for one minute to know you're seeing completely different level of players.

He's a tidy enough footballer, his set up for Sterling's goal in the Semi against Chelski was very nice. But yes he does have that Lampard vibe although not known for his goals from distance like Lampard. He could develop in a number of different ways, a lot depends on what his final physical shape is. If by 21 he's 6'2 and as strong as a bull then we may deploy him as a forward, if he doesn't bulk up and stays under 5'10 then we may see him moved off centre, not quite wide but giving a fullback and a centre back problems about who picks him up like Ericksen. Its unlikely we'd use him like Lampard was used as a strong and powering second forward/attacking midfielder. I also don't think he'll end up playing central midfield. Lampard was never as effective bursting from deep as he didn't have the pace or movement to get into situations, he was far better the closer to goal he was and Roles may be the same. I just don't know.

I've not seen Roles in the flesh but he looks like he will keep growing a bit. Just got the sort of gangling body shape that looks like it's still got some spurting to do (stop tittering).

Sounds like he will be a Jack of all trades who can fill a variety of Roles

@Sophos151 & @Romulus

Did you assume I meant Kane as he is now? I didn't. I meant Kane as a youth player. He was never the quickest, never the strongest, never the most skillful, never the one that caught the eye. He didn't start to stand out until he was maybe 16/17 when he had a growth spurt but he was still fairly gangly. Before that no one other than maybe John McDermott thought that he'd become what he has.

Always thought Roles was quite tall defo got quite a rangey body shape .theres something about him much like Kane .his name just keeps popping up .Might be a step to far but he actually reminds me more of gerrard than lampard at that age .be interesting to see how he develops .

Former U18 Charlie Hayford is not having his contract at Sheff Wed renewed but that's not the end of his footballing career. Young Charlie is off to South Africa to join Bidvest Wits. Apparently Charlie's dad is South African so he qualifies for a Visa. Good luck Charlie.

What do the youth watchers make of the prospect of us looking to bring back Adam Smith if we sell Walker?

Don't believe it for a second. He's terrible defensively and only fairly decent going forward. He's not the biggest or strongest. He is an athlete, he can get up and down all day but there's very little quality at either end.

I think so, hence with Dier there as well we possibly don't need anyone for those positions.

We need to concentrate on possibly a full back and the attacking midfield area.

If we are playing 343 next season we will have eriksen, dele, son, lamela, sisoko and nkoudu battling for two positions.

I imagine, depending on how Lamela feels in pre-season we may see a quiet loan exit for Nkoudou, he's just not up to it. Sissoko will almost certainly be off as well I just can't see him hanging around as he gets successively less football, especially with Winks coming back into the squad and the further emergence (hopefully) of Onomah and Edwards.

I agree. the bottom line is I just don't feel he has the quality we require

What is the view on the under 18s for next season. Will McDermott continue to fill in as coach or do we expect an appointment? Also has there been anything official on Bayliss?

I'd expect a young coach to come in and in a low-key way start to take some of the load off of McDermott in a similar way to the Kieran McKenna. Nothing on Bayliss. Not even any rumours that I know of bar whatever it was that got posted on this site a few days ago.
