I doubt anyone really thinks we're going to be going balls to the wall for a whole host of top talent - think the disconnect comes when we seem to lose out on a top target to a team that we're not in the same stratosphere as - what's the fall back option ....

Jjetset. He wrote there would be 2 different approaches on transfer market depending on the fact if we are in CL next season or not.

CL: Shows the strategy is working, no need to spend.
EL: Too expensive to compete, no need to spend.

For most players being in the CL is bollocks anyway, it’s whether we are prepared to pay the wages they want and pay the fee their club wants.

First of all, Dier and Wanyama - both DM - plays in a different position than Gomes, who play more advanced.
Wanyama, in his first season, was a beast in MF and if it hadn't been for his injuries he's still be a beast. But yes, right now it's not hard to improve on a half-crocked player who's still not match-fit.
Dier, yes, he's not had a good season but he's coming off a summer in with WC (it's common for players to loss a bit form coming of a WC summer) and's been unlucky fitness wise. Added to that, he's not been given a chance to hold down a specific place in the team, although he's had long runs as DM of course.
At least give Dier another season to prove himself. Personally I would not have swapped Dier for Gomes...

I can't think of a single game this season that Dier or Wanyama have played well let alone been outstanding. Based on this season alone I can't believe that Gomes could possibly have offered less. Dier for me is a centre back who can play midfield in an emergency and Victor is sadly finished at the top level. In fact both offered very little last season too.

Some signings under Poch when we were in the EL: Davies, Son, Alderweireld, Trippier

In CL? Wanyama, Janssen, Sissoko, Sanchez, Llorente, Aurier

Regardless of what you think of the fullbacks bought in the EL windows, they're ever-present and have been there through some of the best periods in our history.

CL recruiting bigger names is a myth, and if it isn't, then it doesn't apply to us as we don't take advantage of it.

It’s hard to even know where to begin after the sheer disaster of the past couple of months.

For me, the following absolutely have to be sold:

Trippier
Wanyama
Dier
Nkoudou
Janssen
Vorm
Lamela

Meanwhile I think the following should leave if they can be upgraded:

Aurier
Davies
Llorente
Carter-Vickers
Walker-Peters
Onomah

And based on the second half of this season, I wouldn’t shed a tear for:

Eriksen
Alli
Winks

That basically leaves only the following who I think are must-keeps:

Lloris
Gazzaniga
Rose
Vertonghen
Alderweireld
Sanchez
Foyth
Skipp
Sissoko
Moura
Son
Kane

Lots of work to do. The rot of not signing anyone for 18 months runs very very deep at this point.

Think the Winks bit is harsh. Other than that I fully agree.

Sell them all besides Kane and let the youth take over - it'll be painful but at least they'll play with heart and passion.

Out of all the duds...I'd be willing to keep Aurier around for another season. There needs to be a closeout liquidation sale for:

Wanyama
Trips
Davies
Lamela
Janssen

Vorm and Llorente are out of contract so they are gone anyway.

If 50M - 60M can't be raised from the above, something is wrong. That's a stud CM or FB! I'll take that trade all day.
Aurier needs to be gone too, injured all the time and not been very good quite frankly.

That doesn’t mean we haven’t been laying groundwork though, does it?
It does not, obviously. But, from his connotation I'm making the conclusion now that it wouldn't be started till the end of the season as the whole phrase was: "You are able to attract better players if you have guaranteed champions league is what i meant. Whether or not we decide to pay the sufficient is a different conversation". I hope I'm wrong.

Agree, my only point would be Winks IS good enough but needs to be used in a different way. If he's used as a bench player until he can prove his injurys are behind him then hes 100% worth keeping.

Really hope we get some positive ITK in the coming weeks, although im not holding out any hope, statement of intent is needed with our first signing in a YEAR!

It’ll slip out before season ticket renewal deadline is done I suspect. Will also help to ease the disappointment next week if it all continues to go tits up.

Our must buys are: DM, CM, RB and back up ST. If Eriksen leaves then we also need a replacement.
I personally believe that we need to make Parrot as back up ST. We neither buy decent players nor promote the Academy players. I read many times that Poch was brilliant at upgrading the young players, but I can't see it.

Winks' injury record is a huge problem. GREAT player, but like Lamela, what's the point of a great player if he's rarely available to show it.

Next season should be make or break for Harry. Obviously it all depends on how the season goes and we might be in a position next May when we’ll do anything to hold on to someone of his quality when down in 9th, but seriously, he needs to get over his injury issues.

Lamela is the prime example of a wasted (decent) wage

This crap about two approaches to transfers regarding CL qualification is exactly why we'll also be nearly men. The thing is we don't get CL imo we'd have to spend much more money. If we get CL will have to spend more money either way we need to spend.

Failure is a disease just like Fear (imo) we have far to many rotten players that have been part of that failure/fear going as far back as Lloris Vertonghen Rose.
