JJ dropping bombs in the Toby thread!! Comments below:

There is a lot more to the Toby story than you guys will ever know which sounds inflammatory but put it this way, I dont expect him to be at the club next season and if he gets a new contract then i dont expect Poch to be there....

Personally we know that we need new full backs too and a CM maybe 2- Eriksen is replaceable as are the full backs.

with good players being worked on- in saying that we had an agreed deal for De Jong last summer only for his #***** agent to renege at the 11th hour! We had Pulisic at the training ground for 2 days in January only for Chelsea to do their usual on us on money.

or buy N'Dombele which we also thought we were close to last summer until Aulas went and slapped a 75M price on him

Loads being worked on as was the case last summer- but deals fell through for Wanyama N'Koudou, Dembele, Victor which affected our squad and spend- if you all knew who will be leaving this summer you would and wouldn't be surprised but as we sit here today i'm expecting big changes. Now if we don't secure Champs League it completely changes that so we have to have 2 options and cant be as proactive as we want.

At least it seems the club is aware players are needed.
Ah, the old chestnut about not having CL affecting sighings. Does anyone really believe that?

We’ve had it three years and barely attracted any coups in the transfer market, whilst Arsenal and Chelsea having attracted - Aubameyang, Lacazette, Pulisic, Kovacic, Higuain without CL.

Players obviously want to play in the CL but in the end money talks and is what gets deals done.

Nothing surprising really. The club should have known we've needed full back upgrades for over a year and the illusive CM signing should always be top priority - we def need 2 though. With Toby and Eriksen leaving that should give us extra to refresh the
squad, assuming we have more left over from previous windows too, I think we can pull in 5-6 players to give us a lift. I'd be happy to sell Aurier AND Trip and invest that money into a new LB & RB. I'm really hoping we go for young English potential mostly plus a huge CM player.

Something like;
Grealish
Aarons/Wan Bissaka
Sessegnon
Brooks
Ndombele (or similar)

I'd be pretty excited to see what Poch could do with that talent.

Quite a good business model for other clubs to just wait until we're in the closing stages of a deal and then come in and gazump and take the player themselves. In the knowledge of how long it takes us to get them over the line, and the likelihood Levy will be trying to screw down some late changes in our favour.

I'm intrigued to see whether we go back in for Grealish - can't help but feel we were only really interested because we thought we could pick him up on the cheap.

He's definitely talented and I would have liked us to sign him last summer but he's spent another season in the Championship, will be 24 in September, and has recently been made Villa captain...so who knows.

Appreciate @JJetset the info as always & yes it’s passed in good faith what you hear/are told. So the following is not a personal dig at you.

Haven’t we heard all this before, ‘so & so’ was close to signing but the goal posts were moved at last min/CFC gazumped us/agent messed up deal/etc....

The one common denominator in all these failed transfers the last 18 years is who....? We all know the answer to that!

Why are we the only supposed ‘big club’ who fail so consistently in the transfer market when it comes to big transfers for our level? The list is endless of quality players slipping through our fingers with every excuse under the sun used for it.

Manager after manager keeps getting shafted by the owners then messages are sent out via JJ/journos (briefed by club off record) that we were in for X Y Z but fell apart at last minute & we all lap it up.

It’s indisputable what the owners have done for the club off the field, but on it they’ve massively let down our last 2 managers who got us CL. After being in positions to challenge & seriously push on the owners have stood still or tried doing it on the cheap which has ultimately back fired. Have these lessons been learnt....... have they f*ck!

We will lose both Toby, arguably our best CB, & chief playmaker in Eriksen. Dress that how too want but that’s a massive loss to our team as we all know they won’t be replaced adequately because that costs serious money...... something we have a reluctance to spend under these current owners.

I can tell you he is revered by the Villa folk. I have family staying in Birmingham and he is currently their highest rated player, he has been for a good 2 seasons now. This was before this weekend's incident, and I rate him quite highly myself.

He would be an excellent fit for us but as always money might be the biggest stumbling block seems as he signed a new contract and has been given captaincy as you've said. Let's see how it pans out in the summer.

Ask yourself this. What are our ambitions moving forward? Is it to win the league or be ‘Arsenal light’ by just qualifying for CL with winning any domestic cups in the process? If it’s the latter then JG would be a ok signing for that. If it’s to win the damn thing is he good enough for that...?

As the other chap said this deal was only on the table for us as it was right up DL street, a chance to get someone way below market value. Well that’s what he thought & still managed to fcuk that up. No surprises there really eh.....

Look, we could have a 100% hit rate signing players if we went to sign shit ones. With our budget, attracting sought after ones is difficult.

If I gave you £10k and said go find me a 2nd hand Audi with under 40k on the clock, sure you might find one, but it would be a hell of a lot easier if I gave you 30k.

It all comes down to finance, and while we’re no able to compete with richer teams, you have to be realistic.

When big and influential players leave there are two options for clubs:

1. Replace like for like
2. Find a different type of player and change system

Option 1 tends to be the hardest as we well know. Take Modric as one example - to find someone of his equivalent skill-set, albeit even one with lesser ability was, and still is, extremely difficult. Luka was really a one-off player which was why Madrid paid a king's ransom for him at the time. I remember fans moaning that we failed to source a Modric replacement yet the truth is a) if there was one readily available, Madrid would have picked him up for less than what they offered us b) we were not the draw we are perhaps now today and there would have been other wealthier and more prestigious suitors. I guess Moutinho was the closest but even he would have been a significant downgrade. Without laboring the point, Bale was always going to be nigh on possible to directly replace.

In both instances, we opted to recruit different types of players - in Bale's case, we opted for 2 in Lamela and Eriksen in an attempt to alter the style of football and the reliance of the Welshman. Dembele slotted into the side post-Modric and whilst he helped the club towards becoming regular top4 contenders, was never a like for like replacement.

Losing Eriksen would be a huge blow - he is a top, top player entering the prime of his career. He has provided wonderful moments with crucial, season-defining goals and assists that are seemingly easy to diminish and forget following a rather poor patch of form. That said, if he is to leave, it strikes me that we have a real opportunity to change our style, perhaps for the better with a different type of player- almost similar to how Liverpool evolved post- Coutinho. Eriksen's departure coupled with a real need to upgrade CM could bring about dynamism in the side that has been sorely lacking.

The reality is that we need to do 2/3 windows in one this summer - which is a gigantic task. There will likely be 10 departures - the likes of Vorm, Toby, Trippier, Wanyama, Eriksen, Onomah, GKN, Llorente, Jannsen, and even Lucas could well depart. Despite the many outgoings, I would still anticipate say, 4 first team and 3 squad players being brought in. Sadly, there is so much work required to fix this squad it is hard to know where to prioritise.

As for specific players on a 'wish-list' - I wouldn't be too unhappy with:

- Aarons (19)
- Tierney (21)
- Tielemens (21)
- Lozano (23)

We’re hardly going for Lionel bloody Messi. Let’s jush work off the players that JJ has quoted in his posts, would you say any of them were world beaters?

Last summer I’ll bet my house the vast majority on here had never heard of De Jong or N’Dombele, they were still relatively unknown to the wider public. We failed to get either over the line. We even screwed up average player, for our current CL level, Grealish. Go back a few years Martial (2015), Mane (16), Wijnaldum (16), etc.

None of these players went for stupid money relative to our budget back then. But we have owners who have a reluctance to go that extra yard & we end up with you fcuking N’koudous of this world. Penny pinch around Mane, watch him go to a rival who had no European footy at that time & then go panic buy Sissoko* for pretty much the same cost as Mane. Genius that!!!

*I’m aware Sissoko has come good now, but it’s taken almost 2 1/2 years & change of position for us to see best of him ?‍♂️

That's a fair analogy, but it's equally true to say that finding a car in the bracket you want is tough, or you could get a decent car within your price range that gives a similar (if not as flashy) performance.

We've essentially been told its a supercar or a bicycle

I don't even know what the fuck I'm talking about anymore, but what's clear is we are gonna need to spend some serious cash this summer... Which we won't. Regardless of if we make CL this season, which is a razor thin line anyway. You can bet your bollocks we won't next year unless there's a major shift in mentality around signings

Éder Militão signed for Real Madrid for €50M. Please tell me why we never are proactive like this? Closing deals before the windows even opens. Assuming we're selling Toby for 25M in the summer we could have bought arguably one of the top prospects in world football as a replacement for a net spend of 25m. Instead we'll dick around pretending to be interested in De Ligt only to be utterly rejected and in the end go for some Serie A dross that in the end will end up costing more or less the same in net spend. Ugh.

A lot of the ITK towards the end of the windows (both summer and winter but more winter if I remember correctly) seemed to put more blame on Poch for lack of transfers than Levy.

If you are Poch, and you are told you have an agreement with DeJong, or you are seeing Pulisic walked around the complex for two days, and then when those fall apart, you are offered second hand players, how would you not be disappointed? If these deals are so close as they always seem to be, then I support Poch not taking second choices. We hear the exact same excuses every year. Poch knows we are at a point where only true difference makers will improve the squad. If those difference makers are dangled right in front of him and then pulled away, I would reject anything else too. Especially when we've seen second choices before (N'Jie, N'Koudou, etc).

Just get something done. Two windows of nothing remains ridiculous and now it sort of sounds like the past three years of great progress could be for nothing if top four is not secured this year. That would be sad.

Because we had a plan, which we ended up being massively ahead of schedule. Now it's not quite reached our ultimate goal, there's no succession planning whatsoever. If there was, we wouldn't face losing 2 of our best players for peanuts and having a squad bloated with shit foreigners

LFC had a plan too, they were ahead of schedule but difference is whilst ahead of it then ran with it by backing their manager with who he wanted. Now look at them. To think they were out of sight for us in the summer of 16 ?‍♂️

They weren’t £750m in the hole last summer, with a stadium that wasn’t yet open. Why are we comparing apples to oranges?

To be honest, I do feel now that the squad needs a major shake-up, even if that means that Toby + Eriksen are sold. We've obviously got a mentality issue and part of that for me is players going a bit stale here.

Of course that would have been helped if we'd freshened up last summer but here we are. Can only deal with the present.

Disappointed to see JJ's tweets that Poch may still go, even with United and Real Madrid out of the picture. That's the main issue for me.

Player-wise, it sounds like we really need to secure the Champions League place to ensure we have a chance at our targets. Hopefully we can do that but I'm not confident. Potentially the end of an era.
