Finally though Southgate has identified that we need a system to fit the players we have rather than vice versa. Would appreciate people's views on my report.

https://sportaccordingtonolan.wordp...ncouraging-decisions-made-early-by-southgate/
I was about to post, the reason England have had struggled for decades is they almost always try to squeeze in the best players or those who are in very poor form but are signed to a big club (was going to say play for a big club but sometimes it doesn't even matter if they've been playing at all let alone playing well) rather than building the strongest team.
Then they play these players out of position in a different system to what they play week in week out at their respective clubs.
Then sit there and wonder why it looks disjointed and players don't look as good when they pull on England shirt.
Nothing will improve until this culture goes and seeing Luke Shaw there last night based on hmmm fuck all other than he's Man U tells me we're not changing any time soon.
So I agree with what you're saying

Well it's a fine balance.
Luke Shaw didn't start, he was a late sub and in the absence of Danny Rose, it makes a degree of sense to keep players, who have the right potential, involved and interested, whilst promoting those in form and playing regularly to the fore.

That's a good article. Hopefully Southgate can carry on looking at the team as a whole rather than getting overly attached to individual players. It's early days, but I've been impressed with him so far.

I agree with this. Let's not forget that although he's been around for a while now Shaw is still only 21 and part of Southgate's role is to bring through young players. He also seem's to have missed out on playing for United because Jose was being a dick rather than any footballing reason.

For the first time in as long as I can remember, I was genuinly satisfied with an England performance, the set up and in the manner we played in.

Yes we lost, to a German team that ran out more testimonial like than competitive, however, it was great to see a formation and style picked and then players picked for the roles available, rather than the shoe horning that has gone on over the years.

Southgate, I tip my hat off to you. Whilst we may not have the players to win anything, this is exactly the right thing to do, and with that I can get behind the national team fully, and then hope, dream of getting a bit of luck behind a team that digs deep.

It's really is that simply, show a bit of passion and work hard, and you'll win the fans over more than walking around not seemingly giving a shit.

Looking forward to Sunday now.

I don't have any problems with Shaw, he's a decent enough squad player and can 'do a job'

What amazed me is that with 10 mins to go and being a goal behind Southgate decides to bring on Shaw, Stones & Ward-Prowse leaving attacking players like Defoe, Sterling, Barkley & Oxlade-Chamberlain on the bench o_O It's almost as if we didn't want to score an equaliser...

I watched about 5 mins, which was enough to maintain that I really have no interest in our national team, and instead fell asleep watching Legion.

I didn't mind it, it was just a friendly after all, and coming from the youth set up, he's more interested in learning during these games, as opposed to results, which I'm happy with.

He knows what Defoe, Sterling, OX and Barkley bring - and those guys may feature on Sunday's competitive game.

But it was just a friendly. What can he learn by putting Defoe on? We need to treat friendlies as learning experiences which is what Southgate did.

Think in that formation we have a pretty strong team. The obvious weak point is the centre of midfield. Henderson will probably come back in but I think if Winks continues to improve he could be the deep playmaker we really need. We could be providing 6 of the outfield players in the very near future.

Love it how Southgate basically copied our 3-4-2-1 formation lol but hey it's shown to work well with likes of Walker, Rose, Alli and Kane so a good decision!

Llana as one of our more creative players then takes our Eriksen role alongside Alli behind the centre forward.

Will be interesting once we have Rose and Kane back in to see how this works.

Hopefully Rooney will be restricted to bench outings if we MUST persist with him and guess Henderson will be back in although I've never really rated him TBH.

Interesting to see whether Dier will continue to play defensive midfield as well or maybe move into back three if we have more midfielders available?

Well, they're either playing 'Charades' or 'Name that tune'.

The IRA, the Luftwaffe, No surrender, Spitfires, f*ck the Pope!, Germans, RAF pilots. What on earth makes 18yr olds and their grandad's from Essex, up north, the Midlands and the Medway towns sing this stuff, I wonder?

Probably just reflecting the misguided sense of superiority this country often indulges in I suppose.
Still, as embarrassing as it is - something tells me they won't be so cocky facing up to the Russians.

Well, I'm sure it causes Nigel Farrage to have a minor orgasm in his pants every time he hears it.

"Don't take me home" and "Everywhere we go" are definite classic away day songs, but apart from drowning out Clive Tyldsley's commentary, the other stuff I can well do without.

It was as if the EDL and Britain First had decided to head over to Germany for a mid-week getaway.

I think Southgate did okay to try the 343 and it worked quite well. The problem is his selection of players. Redmond and ward-prowse simply not good enough. Livermore did okay yesterday, but I don't think he is good enough for long terms. Though I think he is facing a crisis in the CM selection. Dier keeps playing CB for us, but Southgate has no other CDM better than Dier at this moment. I still think Winks deserves a chance, or maybe I am biased
