That's a really good price. Only 18, pretty versatile, English, really looks to have bags of skill and potential. Pretty much what we should try to do at least once or twice every window.

I agree with you - but every other club bar City are looking to do the same.
We have a VERY high profile right now and we must strike while the irons hot

14 million for a young English player with a ton of potential is a decent price imho

Good to hear from the Goat again

With 14m in past 6 years, we got experienced pros like Lloris, Eriksen, Jan, Toby, Wanyama, and a few more.
Its just crazy that now we are having to pay 14m for a Championship youngster who started just 4 league games last season.

Market is so inflated nowadays, we would say 14m for Clarke a bargain signing...

Anyway, we need home growns in squad. Considering the talent he has, he could be a very good signing for the future

It is especially strange when you hear us being quoted around 25m for Ryan Sessegnon. Only a year older, tons more experience (Both in the Championship and EPL) and generally much more production.

3 of those players you're going back at least 5/6 years and all but 1 are defensive players.

As you've mentioned the market is crazy and he helps to fill the HG quota. I dont think £14m is bad at all.

Chances are the fee will be paid in instalments and with performances related clauses needing to be met.

His value could also absolutely sky rocket over the course of his contract, if he progresses well, too.

I’d like that deal at £14m.

None of those were at the going rate, even back then.

Eriksen, Wanyama, Jan all had 1 year on their contracts.

Toby was surplus to requirements after his Southampton loan, and Lyon were in financial difficulty when selling Lloris.

They were all c£25m players at the time.

I know it's crazy that's he's only had 4 games, but Foyth only played a handful in Argentina and cost us £10m 2 years ago.

14m for a top English 18 year old is the kind of deal we should be completing for fun - the Ndombele, Lo Celso deals are definitely needed too but those will never be the regular deals for us. We will always need to be clever and I'd be very optimistic about the long term future if we got deals like Clarke and Sessegnon done this summer.

This backs up what Hercs was saying in one of his recent posts regarding what we are hoping to get done this window, he did say a youngster under the 15M mark, so thats something Poch?Levy can tick off this summers shopping list :)

With the strong ITK reports of Clarke being v.close. Anyone else considered that it may be Clarke instead of Sessengon? Similar position but cheaper, freeing up funds to be in a better position to secure our main 2 targets?

All depends on whether poch sees sess as a LB or forward I suppose.

14mill is a good deal, hope we try for one more of these types of deals this window too.

It would be great if we could spend around £20m every season to bring in 2 young prospects.

They tend to keep their resale value so that would free up funds for the next youngster, after the initial investment.

And that's of course if the youngster doesn't 'work out'. You'd hope that some would become important squad or first teamers.

I'd be surprised if they were competing for a single squad position.

Very different players (not least preferred foot), who yes, can both play in attacking mid but I'd suggest their trajectory from here will be quite different.

No. Remember it's a double deal inc his brother, which will take as long as it takes. Herc has previously said we are targeting 2 teenagers to push into 1st team squad.

Certainly hope this is the case.

We've been stung a bit on the HG rules this season, so buying up promising English talent (or at least, home grown talent, since technically they're not the same thing) while looking at marquee senior squad players to bolster what we've already got, is exactly the approach we should be taking IMO.

The Sess brothers and Jack Clarke, along with Etete who's already signed, Parrott who seems to be coming on really well, KWP, and potentially a move for someone like Max Aarons if the opportunity arises, would give us a really solid foundation of young HG talent to build on over the next five years.

Sadly I've seen nothing from the likes of Skipp, Onomah and Edwards to suggest they're going to be good enough in the end, but very much hope I'm proved wrong.

Of course they won't all make it but that's just part of the game.

(EDIT: Just realised this is the ITK thread, not the Clarke thread, oops)
