I can understand where you're coming from but.... with Poch seemingly wanting players to be friendly and gentlemanly, how would you rate a player that agrees a deal then comes back and tries to change.
Yes I know Daniel has probably done this but that's not the point. Toby apparently agreed a deal @ £120,000 then came back and asked for an extra £80,000.
Sorry I wouldn't take kindly to that if I were a player and would be knocking on Daniels door very loudly.
Would set a precedent we couldn't sustain.
That kind of attitude I think we've worked hard to stamp out.

It'd be a shame to open a door to it again.

Simultaneously, players will understand that they can be easily cast aside should they become incredibly selfish and they will be unable to hold the club at ransom, especially as it's likely they will have long contracts running.

True...dont disagree to it. I am not saying givein to every players demand. I don't know what other things went on & we aren't privy to it.

I had hoped we could have done better to keep the one player who got us to being the best defensive side in decades ?

What is it with our players who've been injured for long periods and contributing very little being the first ones knocking on the door asking for a fkin ridiculous wage increase?
Walker, Rose and now Toby. Must be contagious.

I reckon it’s the spare time, when you’re out of the team and not at training, it’s not hard to lose focus and start thinking about money you could be earning elsewhere etc. More likely to be spending time with family and friends who might lead you astray as well.

I standby Poch & Levy decision making in general on the 'project' in last 4 years. But sometimes, these decisions which is based on their ideology is proving detriment to progress of the club: Poch not selecting Toby in cup semis & Levy showing hypocrisy when someone other than him is moving the goal post.

We have arguably the best CB in the league and we are going to lose him because our club cant come to terms with current market situation. Instead of going from strength to strength, we are again rebuilding. This is not sustainable because players will figure it out that, to get out to richer club, all they need to do is to throw the toys out of the pram.

And when all this is sorted we'll still have the best CB in the league. His name's Jan Vertongen.

Totally agree with the club's stance on this. Toby was taking the piss clearly. What I disagree with though is that we're seemingly happy to let him go to United now he's not signing the new deal.

I think someone previously eluded to why injured players appear to knock on the door for new contracts. It’s down to the way we pay players. Contracts are very much performances based. If they aren’t playing then there’s a good chance they’re earning relatively low wages to what they are normally paid. Especially injury prone players like Toby.

I do agree to an extent but if he goes to United (who even by their standards are bulking at personal terms) it will be a Levy masterclass.

I've heard some suggest that because we offer the most generous incentives in the Premier League, when players aren't getting playing time and their take home earnings significantly drop, it reminds them of what they could be earning elsewhere without the incentives complicating their wages. This in turn leads to discontent over their situation, particularly from an older player who may only have one or two contracts left in their career.

I can’t possibly imagine the great stress this must cause them and their families.

Yeah well we didn't exactly implode without him, did we?

Get rid of his dad, go see Levy and say sorry, or fuck off.

But the point is that it's not just one player that did that. What about the other defenders? The goalkeeper? The midfielders and the forwards who press the ball? It's a team game with every player contributing to how solid we are.

Better than offering him the best contract for any player currently at Spurs? I think we did pretty good to offer him terms above Kane and Lloris...

I do find it amusing that Levy is annoyed at someone for changing terms after an agreement has been made...almost like looking in a mirror lol. Dont blame his stance with Toby though

The crazy thing is that if the October date is true, we actually offered him the top whack for a PL defender at the time (as it was before VVD moved).

As far as I could tell last time I looked the top 6 PL clubs pay their top CBs in the £100-120k region.

For Spurs to go for that was a pretty big deal, and for him to then go back and ask for an increase of £80k on the agreed amount (2/3rds of the original offer more!) I can understand where Levy stood. Add to that the injury and Sanchez stepping up and it makes a lot more sense...

It was right not to pay over the odds, we need to save those extra wages for Bale :D

Correct. And he initially agreed, but his father got involved and it went down hill from there...
