And when was the last time one of out starting XI players came in after pre season?

How many starting XI players do you think we will sign this summer? In fact dont answer that as it will only start guessing games. The point is this is how we do business for a reason, and I don't see that changing in the short term.

So being brave means we won't be signing any starting XI players? Good times.

It's not about panic though, I feel that our late trading impacts negatively on our early season form. Therefore it appears that the board puts profit before football.
Why don’t you think it’s poch’s famously gruelling pre-season?

So many people assume it is the late dealings which affects us but I find no evidence for that.

2016/17 - first game of the season we had one new player in the starting XI- victor wanyama. Otherwise same as the dream team from season before.

2017/18 - first game - NO new signings !!

Why were the 10 players from season before not up to it ? Surely going with continuity against other sides trying to bed in players is an advantage ?

Poch famously integrates player’s very slowly to the first XI anyway.

I cannot see why people think late signings has an effect. What have I missed ..or is this a silly myth that needs to die ?

Davison made his debut in the 3rd game coming on for 90 seconds after we conceded vs burnley.

At least i thought we would try bring in players when we could get them, but it seems we are determined to sell before we buy. that may be risky. We can't be sure that the signings we are after will still be available or even interested after we are done with all of that.

I still think this window could be great though, and we do have time. Will not go into panic mode just yet.

Well we haven't shifted anyone yet have we, though that could change very quickly. If we struggle in that department though then our whole summer window could come down to deadline day.

I always took the Poch quotes about being brave as relating to player contracts...

It was about being brave and paying the going rate for our star players - and our star manager - i seem to recall, but may be mistaken, that the comments came out before he and Kane signed their new bumper contracts...

Beyond that, one in one out is fairly standard for us...

If it becomes clear that nobody wants our castoffs in England we will definitely make the signings we need to before our window closes and focus on offloading them overseas before the European window closes

Quite right. I’ve edited my post to reflect the fact there were NO new signings in that starting XI.

Point reinforced !

Okay, with JJ's tweet and selling before we buy and all that... did we literally not just have a season where we were barely able to fit all of our players into the CL squad? Aren't we like at the limit/max for that and thus one of the reasons why Grealish is such an attractive prospect since he counts as home grown?

So we need to sell players so we literally have space to register them in our squad to actually play them is how I first read the tweet. So we see what's happening with Toby, the Moussa's, N'Koudou and try and shift them on so we have space in both our premier league and CL squads to then sign new players.

Because others looked at Pochs quotes at he end of the season and he fact that he signed a new deal so soon after combined with other more bullish ITK predictions of big money to spend and actually having a net spend and thought actually for once we may be “brave”

Ultimately 3 weeks to go so let’s see what happens but yet again we find ourselves racing against the clock whilst our competitors close multiple equally hard to conclude deals

Poch also said in the same interview that he didn't envisage us spending big on a single player, but as usual people ignore those quotes.

Trix has been kind enough to share his informed opinion this morning and he has said the same thing all summer (which I've agreed with). He seems pretty calm about things, people should take that as a good sign.

perhaps if that's all we heard and nothing more.

except with the various ITK at the start of window saying we would exceed 150 million spend regardless of player sales, and the likes of De ligt being nailed on you can imagine why people would have those thoughts

suppose you could say its on them for not taking the news with the usual salt sachet

And yet we have until deadline day to balance ins and outs and register the squad that will be playing.

Yes... and?

Two of the players heavily linked to leaving were in the World Cup till the last weekend (Toby and Dembele).
We also have Sissoko and N'Koudou likely to leave who are seemingly attracting interest.

Yes, we're in the last month of the window but it's not like nothing is happening and there's no reason for any of it.

I am concerned about the start of the season with nine players in the semi-finals of the world cup, how many of them are going to be ready to go? Some early new signings would have been advantageous to get them up Poch standard.

Any competent business has a budget for wages and a strict headcount, ie, number of employees per department.
If our first team squad has reached that threshold we need to sell first out of principle regardless of the financial situation.

Levy is a businessman and since he has been running us as a business we have prospered.
As a result this is not about to change.

Genuinely curious why you disagree.

The argument people make is ..
- our start to the season is poor.
- we make signings late.
- the late signings are causing the poor start.

Now obviously some reason has to be given for this conclusion and I think the most powerful one is that by making these signings late, the new players don’t get a proper poch pre-season and so don’t play as well.

But for this to hold true the following must be true:
- The late signings must be playing in the games where we have bad form.
- The players’ form must only recover once they have a poch preseason. Otherwise their poor performance could be down to the usual hiccoughs we see with a lot of new signings that typically take months to get right eg adjusting to a new country, getting in tune with teammates. If these alternative reasons are correct then signing them earlier would not solve our early season form...

In fact these players have a minimal role in the early season games and so cannot be responsible for our poor form. What we find is that poch beds these players in slowly. This is true regardless of whether the players were signed early or late.

This must mean there are one or more other causes of the poor early form but it cannot be because signings are made late.

Very open to being told I’m wrong on any of this !!

A good point actually, and one I keep forgetting with the new rules. Plenty of interest from abroad in our players as well so hopefully this is the case.
