The mighty Tim Murtagh, I'm sure there are a few Middlesex fans on here who have seen him do similar over the years in County Cricket.

We can always take our game to new levels can’t we...
This has got to be the worst performance I have ever seen in my life! Okay, Murtagh knows Lords but there are no excuses whatsoever for this.

To be fair (most of you probably saw or have seen the stat) expecting Roy to open, considering he hasn't opened in the first innings of a first class match since 2013, it's a bit much to expect him to walk out there and turn it on ... No?

You could excuse Roy, it’s the other six! Will we make it to lunch?!??

I really wouldn't put money on it right now, every ball (near enough) looks like it could be a batsmans down fall at the moment.

This isn't a good hour and a half of test cricket to say the least.

You couldn’t make this up...
You could if you'd been watching any English test cricket team over the past few years :D

I've turned it off, fuck watching that bunch of lemons. And I've never been a fan of Root as captain either, not that having a different captain would make any of these better players, but I might as well go full rant. Quit you twat, you're not a good leader.

Joe Root needs to start facing questions over his captaincy now.

When the openers fail, he usually does too. He flat out refuses to bat at 3 when he’s our best option.

He’s a shit leader and shouldn’t be captaining this side.

What is for certain, is that this Test is rather pointless. The established players probably can't be bothered in the 30 degree heat, against a rather insignificant opponent and in the aftermath of a wonderful experience in the World Cup.

However, 43-7 is unacceptable, no matter who the opposition is, never mind Ireland. It's pathetic and will lift the Aussies infinitely.

We did start with a light batting line-up, with Ali in at 6, but Burns & Denly have systematically shown themselves to be inept at this level. And the worst thing is, this isn't an International match, they're playing against First Class opposition.

We are playing like we have been living it up in Faeces nightclub since the WC win (as per Spurs after the 2008 League Cup!).
Tend to agree with others that Root should not be captain, not least because it is affecting the batting performances of someone who is in the top 5 players in world cricket.
Go easy on us aussiespursguy (when you have stopped laughing that is!)

A couple of things really:
1. Different mindset. In the one day game bowlers are looking to contain the batsmen, whereas in the test game they are continually probing weaknesses, with an attacking field, and not worrying about losing a few runs.
2. Better, more technical players - bowlers like Jimmy Anderson are at the top of their game, but rarely play one day cricket as it does not suit their game, where they like to attack the batsmen and not contain him as in (1). If there is a weakness in technique they will find it, and exploit it to the full.
More aggressive fields at the start of innings, so edges usually don’t go unpunished, and red balls swing all over the place. It takes a completely different temperament.

Thanks guys... just seems like such a huge chasm between our ODI side and this one.

Although it is a nothing test match and really akin to a pre season friendly given the main matches are next weeks and beyond.

Watching this England team in 38 degree heat with no shade. I couldn’t think of much worse mate.

This England team I agree but luckily we should be in the shade. The people in the upper Compton and Edrich stands are really going to crisp up though.

Got day 4 tickets for the Aussies, refund incoming I think.

Is anyone surprised?

We've discussed it all before, they (as in the whole set up, top to bottom) obviously don't care though and it wont change.
