Haven’t been watching, but sounds “same old, same old” for our batting. The top order doing their best to lose the Test match, only for the middle order to salvage something.

Still work to do though. First innings in the sub continent you need to score 350-400 at least.

This England batting line up and first innings is like groundhog day.
What are we thinking of batting Moeen at 3! - hes a 7 pushing a 6 at best.
Well played Ben Foakes - fancy opening next innings!!

So frustrating from Rashid. You play a great innings, scoring freely, but then you get out 3 overs before stumps. You have to rein it in at that stage and just play time. It's only the first day.

Will be a struggle to get to 350 now.

I'm a big fan of Foakes generally but I really don't see what this selection policy is all about.

Bairstow is deemed the best keeper at Test Level.

Buttler is deemed the best keeper at T20/ODI.

Bairstow doesn't play in this Test, Buttler is a specialist batsman only and Foakes rescues the day.

What the fuck happens in the next Test when Bairstow is fit?

Good question, but when you've got a turning pitch and a dodgy batting line-up you can't afford to drop catches standing up to the wicket.

They feel safer with Foakes there than Buttler. Bairstow? Not as good a keeper as Foakes, so maybe play Buttler and Bairstow as batters and keep Foakes in.

But that means dropping Jennings and having Moeen opening, and A&C won't be having that.

I'm not sure they are capable of thinking that far ahead. TBH Foakes has shown he's got more about him facing spin than, ooooh, lets say Moeen, he of a thousand lives (who is supposed to be a good player of spin. Haha to that). He's even shown more than Jennings, he of five hundred lives. But they'll keep on picking them, on and on and on until the penny finally drops (it won't) or Root and Bayliss rotate out. Foakes has at least shown something but lets be honest, he's out as soon as they can justify bringing Bairstow back in, this England team is harder to get out of than it is to get in.

Bairstow sulked like a baby when he wasn't used as wicketkeeper after Buttler scored runs against India, well this isn't going to go down well either :D

Get a captain in with some nous and gravitas and make the cherub bat where he's told. Ooooh, very Spurs Match thread and knee jerky :D

The problem is we are cramming too many no 6/7 batsmen in our line up (stokes, buttler, Ali, Curran, bairstow, foakes, woakes) someone has to bat up the order

Bairstow should shut up about the keeping and do what he is asked to do.
I would pick bairstow as a pure batsman and give him 10 or so test to judge him if he is good enough because picking him as a average keeper he is getting a easy ride batting at 7

IKR.

What's the point in saying "we have a team full of all-rounders" if half of them are wicket keepers.

"I'll keep for a few overs" isn't beneficial.

I hope they don't just drop Moeen from the team (for me he's a better wicket taker than Rashid) if he fails at 3 (where he should never be batting in the first place)

The one player we have with the temperament and skill set to play there is Root, but for whatever reason he doesn't want to do it.

Tough!

Also what's up with these blokes? Foakes, Woakes, Stokes. all we need is John Noakes and we'll have bingo!

Fair comment, but you can only pick from the squad you've got.

England with 139 run 1st inning lead. Moeen 4-66. Apart from the top order batting yesterday, it's not a bad performance.
