Click bait will be even worse with these reporters having to justify the paywall and earn a living.
Funnily enough the stuff the writers who follow/report on the NFL team I follow is pretty comprehensive stuff, yeah you still get filler amongst it but overall if they do with the football what they do with the NFL it could well shake up main stream sport reporting over here.

Not really. The subscription fee neutralises (to an extent) the mad scramble for clicks that websites like Football London have to engage in to remain profitable.

I do wonder which Spurs beat reporter they’ve lured across. Dan Kilpatrick worked hard to get to the Standard, I reckon he’ll stay there. Ali Gold can’t be getting paid much at Football London. Then there’s the likes of Ben Pearce.

Jack Pitt Brooke has gone and he tends to write a bit about us.

So you'd have to pay actual money to read stories that you'll be able to read for free elsewhere?

What a fantastic deal!

BTW, I've got some magic beans for sale if anyone is interested...

I remember lots of people (including myself) sneering at the times when they went behind a pay wall years ago. I think they are now very successful and it was the right decision.

It's not my thing but also not nonsense.

Was wondering why there's been so many 'farewell' posts on twitter by football journalists in the recent weeks

They are apparently losing a boat load of money yet they keep growing at an alarming rate. Not sure it’ll last much longer.

Spotify only started to turn a profit this year. Short term losses aren't an issue while there's the potential for massive growth.

Seems like today is the day it launches properly. Lots of journos sharing the subscribe link with a 50% off the first year deal.

Interesting. I spend more time on the internet than ever but the quality of info is so poor.

This could be what I have been looking for.

My understanding is the Athletic is running in the US and this is an expansion into the UK market.

Do any of our American posters know about the quality of their other coverage?

If it has quality pieces and decent journalism, then it’ll succeed. Might take the plunge.

I'm not American but their NBA coverage is excellent and the same applies to the Jade Hoye produced podcasts that they bought.

I signed up for it a while ago but i barely read it so it was expensive. I cancelled my sub and threw away the password. The coverage in the US is decent enough if they have good journos who cover your teams. If they dont, its shit(like it was for me). I really signed up becuase i liked the national writers. But they have now all mastered the art of writing a few articles a week and creating 1000 ways to link to them a day. I had some interesting reads but thats really it. And if you were looking for free agency and trade information, the athletic US is largely the last place you’d find stuff. You find all that on twitter. Not sure how it will be for footy coverage.
