I'd love to give that a go. It pretty much covers all bases for me and has the creativity there in Lamela and Eriksen. Not sure AVB is a 3-5-2 kinda guy though.
He's not; and he's bought specific players to fulfil his beloved 4-2-3-1. He may reluctantly go 442 in a mid match change-up or start it on a very rare occasion. But now he's bought most of the players he's wanted he's going to prove to the world that he can make his 4-2-3-1 work like he has before.

[edit] cheers for correction ,syn...forgot he played 433 at porto...so used to this formation now, hard to imagine him using 433 again. Point being, I think this is the only real back-up formation he likes and is now the formation of choice so won't change and now he's committed to it he will do everything to prove that it works.

Single minded, bloody minded, dedicated...call it what you want.

At the moment I like to call it dysfunctional.

I was encouraged with Eriksen display against Newcastle he opened them up we just couldn't finish.

Lets see what Lamela can do can't be on the bench forever.

I've lost interest in team selection. AVB will keep doing what he's doing, and that goes for subs as well. Continues to baffle the absolute fuck out of me.

I didn't really watch much of him under Porto but didn't he actually use a 4-3-3 system with them?

You see, I originally thought he was trying to make us a 4-3-3 team, following in the footsteps of Mourinho's old 4-3-3 system at Chelsea. I thought that the 4-2-3-1 of last year was because he was working with what he had. Perhaps he still feels that without that Moutinho or Modric type player in the centre he can't get a midfield 3 to flow so he's just going with a couple of brick shithouses anchoring instead in the hope that the 3 in front of them will provide the creativity. Or perhaps he may feel that we may not have wingers that are good enough to function as forwards, hence the rumours we get for Hulk every now and again.

I'd much rather a 4-3-3 than this bland 4-2-3-1 any day of the week. We shouldn't be afraid to push our wingers up forward. Sandro makes for a perfect Makelele-type holding DM to allow Paulinho and Eriksen to play with more freedom further forward, and Chadli and Lamela have both played wing forward roles at their previous clubs successfully. Perhaps then we'd have players set up to attack and feed the striker more. I think we have the tools for it and I'm surprised AVB isn't trying it.[/quote]

Yup, my bad, I've conflated the two. So much talk of formations...all I see are combos in my heeeeeeeead:confused:

I think this is the nearest he can get to what he used at porto for now, he'd play 433 if he'd have completed his picture of the team. Pretty sure of that.

This appears to be the new standard he's on though and he doesn't look like deviating from it.

Definitely think it would suit us, I'd go for this:

That's my dream but will never happen in a million with AVB.

This system offers incredible flexibility though. Makes me rock 'ard!

i like this team (but sandro for capoue).

4-3-3 attacking team. There's no point controlling the possession when we don't know what to do with the ball, time to get some creativity on the pitch! To dare is to do and all that

Lloris

Walker - Kaboul - Vertonghen - Rose

Sandro

Eriksen - Holtby

Lamela ----------- Townsend

Soldado

That could help us circulate the ball more quickly for sure. The problem we have been having is that...

townsend erik siggs (or whatever three it is)

...tend to stand in a straight line and wait for the ball to be put on their feet. Eriksen came deeper at times against n'cstle but this sets him in that position to begin with which I think would help him as he could develop plays with something more substantial in front of him to develop.

As good as Lamela is, bringing him in as the only change isnt really gonna drastically change the way we are playing. Baring in mind AVB is unlikely gonna bring Ade back in, I'd go with this...

-----------Lloris--------------
Walker Kaboul Vertonghen Rose
--------Sandro Paulinho-------
---Lennon Lamela Townsend---
-----------Soldado-----------

*Lamela in a free role
*Wingers on their natural sides, able to get crosses in
*Inverted wingers is not working with a Soldado type of player

that could work better, but we need eriksen in there, otherwise we have bugger all attacking skill in that lineup. Eriksen in townsends spot drifting in off the left.

Really is baffling that we havent seen townsend or eriksen start on the left of the 3

something a little different. Townsend is just going to be double and triple teamed from now on, I think he'd make CB shit themselves running through the middle. Makes his inevitable cut in and shoot less predictable also.

Plus I think Lamela looked really good on the right due to his intelligent movement and moved all about the place. Same would apply to Eriksen.

if Rose was fit then the pace and stamina of he and Walker should provide good width with sandro doing what he does

Playing two holding midfielders in Sandro and Capoue is paying too much respect to City. Sandro had Toure in his back pocket last season.

We need balance, creativity and some continuity for a few weeks in our line up. Just play your best team Andre FFS. That doesn't include Dawson, the Paulinho/Dembele combo, Townsend on the right, Sigurdsson & Lennon.

Lloris
Walker Kaboul Vertonghen Rose
Sandro--Paulinho
Lamela--Holtby--Eriksen
Soldado
Gomes, Naughton, Capoue, Dembele, Townsend, Sigurdsson, Adebayor
We're very capable of having a real go at them with this XI. If we find ourselves in a comfortable position then we can easily shut up shop by bringing Dembele on for Eriksen or Holtby and stick Townsend on the left for counter attacks.

Not a bad shout. Plus that XI has the flexibility to go 433 with Paulinho and Eriksen either side of Sandro. Maybe not specifcally away at Man City but I want us to have more fluidity in our line-up, we're very easy to defend against at the moment. Our only change seems to be the very occasional swapping of wings for Townsend & Sig/Lennon. We need so much more movement in general.

Just seen that Kompany is out for another few weeks that's something I guess. Hoping that they gift us some space to play in I can't see us stopping them scoring at their place.

Regarding the midfield debate, I'd have this:

Townsend Eriksen Lamela

----Sandro Paulinho----

They've looked vulnerable at right back all season and we need some crosses going in. Eriksen has played awesomely against them before, and I don't think we should ever leave Sandro out against any decent side.

So that's Kompany and Silva out of our game.

Hope Aguero and Toure get little knocks in the upcoming friendlies (not sure if their respective
countries have any games in the next few days) , just enough to miss our game but back for their
game against Arsenal.

I'd go with this. But seeing as Rose seemed to be on his death bed from a dodgy toe I'd move vert over and stick in Dawson if Vlad isn't fit.
