Two of our best midfield combinations in modern times were Jenas with Carrick and Modric with Parker. It’s not about having a pure DM and AM like it used to be, it’s about having players with the right physical and mental attributes who’s skill sets complement each other.

Winks + Sissoko
N’Dombele + Sissoko
Winks + N’Dombele
Dier + any of the above when we needbero be more solid.

Eriksen or Lo Celso dropping back to make a 3 with any of the above combinations when we need more midfield control.
Carrick is as defensive midfield has can be and Parker was one as well. Carrick doesn't tackle a lot, but nor does Died. The real role of a defensive midfield is positional, not tackling.

A good example is Carrick, one of the worlds best at protecting his defense during his prime, being an out option for defense, making good decisions and blocking channels. Compare that with say Sandro, who made lots of great tackles but positionally would leave us wide open. He was popular but was not very good at holding, its why his best performances cane when partnered with another holding midfielder!

Now Winks can hold, it's very much in his skill set, but we can be way to open when he is holding. Now Died had an interrupted season and never really got into his stride. So could look out of it. Wanayama has had so many injuries and is probably no longer of a level where he can contribute. But there failures to look convincing have little to do with style of play but more to do with form and injuries.

Or course though we need options and also stop thinking about tackler=holding midfielder, ahead of positional play supporting transition as well as defense

Off the top of my head, I think if you did that you'd have a player or two less in the attack; basically you wouldn't have your fullbacks further up the pitch.

The idea is to overload the defence with your attacking players to keep the opposition pressed back into their half. Fullbacks are useful in achieving this.

So overload the defence with two more midfielders. I’d prefer them in the creative positions rather than two fullbacks.

Our deepest midfielder is Winks. Our tactics have moved on from having one of our midfielders being a traditional destroyer imo. Dier and Wanyama look so awkward and out of place in our current set up. Not many top clubs play with players who just sit and tackle these days.
This is one of those narratives I just don't understand nor agree with. When Dier was fit this season he started. Winks & Sissoko were played as the deepest midfielder out of necessity. Thats why Eriksen was dropped in to play a deeper role most of the season to assist as we didn't play with a defensive midfielder.

Additionally, Barcelona is the only top club I can think of that doesn't play with a true DM. Chelsea - Kante, City - Fernandino, United - Matic, Liverpool - Fabinho, Madrid - Casemiro, Bayern - Martinez, Atleti - Rodri, Juve - Matuidi, Dortmund - Delaney.

Barcelona is about the only one who doesnt play with a tackler and its because Busquets reads the game better than almost any midfielder in the world. PSG also don't do and it bites them in the ass in the UCL when they face better teams.

It is in my opinion a big reason why we looked poor defensively this season. With players like Ndombele, Lo Celso & Eriksen you need an anchor to sit back in midfield so they are allowed to go do what they do best.

Tottenham open talks with Lyon over Tanguy Ndombélé but clubs far apart
• Lyon want €75m for midfielder but Spurs value him at €50m
• Manchester City, Juventus and Real Madrid also interested

Tottenham’s pursuit of the Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombélé is being complicated by his €75m (£66.6m) price-tag. Mauricio Pochettino, the Spurs manager, has told Daniel Levy, his chairman, that Ndombélé is precisely the type of player that he wants to sign this summer, as he looks to refresh his project at the club.

Ndombélé, who has six France caps, is only 22 but already has won rave reviews for his rare blend of skill and power. He is blessed with excellent dribbling and passing ability, not to mention pace.

Spurs have opened talks over Ndombélé, although they have yet to make an official offer, and they value him at around €50m. The problem for them will be negotiating with the Lyon chairman, Jean-Michel Aulas, who is as notorious as Levy for driving hard bargains. Aulas knows that there is interest from many leading clubs in Ndombele, including Manchester City, Juventus and Real Madrid.

“I am negotiating with the biggest European clubs for Ndombele,” Aulas has said.

Pochettino is keen to strengthen in midfield, having sold Mousa Dembélé to China last January, and he would like to add more than one player in the area. Spurs have had talks with the representatives of Ajax’s Donny van de Beek and Roma’s Nicolò Zaniolo – both of whom also fit the profile of being young and gifted, with the potential to grow on the field and increase in value. Pochettino wants the 19-year-old Fulham winger, Ryan Sessesgnon, as well.

after RS, i think we need to spend big on him, and a right back we will really strengthen the team.

Doesn't exactly seem like new information. We surely can't value him at 50m (barely £45m), but this is Levy we're dealing with I suppose

I would argue near enough all the players you’ve mentioned there aren’t exclusively destroyers. Player who can run and tackle but are also ball progressers except for maybe Matic who I would say isn’t a critical part of United’s team anymore. Look at Kante who’s been moved out of that role in favour of Jorginho, a ball player, into the role that Sissoko plays for us in that he needs to get up and down between boxes. Think the natural destroyers are found at clubs that can’t rely on having possession i.e Gueye at Everton or Lerma at Bournemouth. Would say the top clubs are favouring technical players who can also graft for those deeper roles.

If we are still negotiating with their clubs at this point then the only way we get players like Ndombele and Lo Celso is if Poch and the club have already 100% convinced the player that they want us over other clubs.

If there’s any doubt in the players’ minds and clubs like City etc are interested then this doesn’t end well for us IMO.

A lot of the 'big bid in' articles of a few weeks ago seem to have made way for 'fairly smaller bid' articles this week

They reckon we value him at only 44mill GBP?

Yeah smells like BS to me.

If it's true then we really haven't changed our strategy at all and the window could be a disaster.

Their valuation of £66 mill is actually fairly reasonable in today's market and lower than I thought it would be!

We should be going in at £55-58 mill or so.

How does any news paper know what the four at the top table value any player at?

That article has teams linked that are looking at other players currently and using a quote that was circulated two to three weeks ago.

Nothing new at all, just a rehash of words reporting information most already knew.

Let's hope it's not the same story as every summer and Levy won't pay the money required to buy our / Poch's top targets.

For those of you who think I am being pessimistic, I simply point to our last two transfer windows, and in fact, our transfer strategy since Levy took over.

The onus should be on Levy and the club to deliver these signings rather than on us fans to have blind faith that this time it will be different. Once the proof is in the pudding, I'll happily change my opinion and praise Levy. Until it happens though..I am still having serious reservations on whether we will ever properly go for it under Levy.

Let's hope this summer is different.

ITKs seemed fairly confident that things were progressing. Presumably that was because nobody else of any note was showing much interest. 66m shouldn't be beyond us and certainly isn't beyond any other rival parties. Got a horrible feeling Aulas is relishing the prospect of rubbing Levy's nose in it.
