Personaly I don't see how Barkley or Zaha make us any better, stronger in reserve maybe but not our first team. In the CL I don't see Barkley or Zaha taking us to the next level. I don't see them starting when everyone is fit. In rotation, sure, of the bench, sure, but I would really like to see an improvement in our starting 11.

Loads of people said the same about Alderweireld and Wanyama.

The important thing I took from the article posted pages back regarding Barkley is the scope for improvement/progression, and its a potential signing that reeks of it imo.

My personal opinion is that Barkley has a lot of untapped potential that clearly appeals to us.

And alot were saying that with Sissoko

The point is we're doing incredibly well. All managers will get a few signings wrong (still not even a full season done under Sissoko either) but overall I think you've got to trust the vision/coaching of the manager in terms of targeting what suits his collective style.

But Sissoko felt like a panic buy- we chased Isco until the last day and suddenly felt we needed another AM when that fell flat. Sissoko was so left field that A&C made a tidy profit on deadline day on odds close to 28-1 if my memory serves me well. I think Barkley has the potential to be like Wanyama and Toby in that he arguably has lots of potential. I'm not massively convinced by Zaha though.

Zaha I'd take, we need some players who can beat a man.

Saw this on squawka the other day

Most take-ons completed in Europe's top 5 leagues since 2014/15:
Eden Hazard (388)
Neymar (366)
Lionel Messi (363)
Wilfried Zaha (311)
Also look at how many times he has been fouled this season, it's always a 'tell tell' sign of a good player. He is second only to Hazard.

Agreed

But I think our change of formation has limited his impact, along with Sisskos and sons, it's killed his opportunities.

We have been very inconsistent, Ali, Toby, victor, going to say Son, Ben Davis, vs a lot of players who we didn't need, but strangely we have the most balanced team in the league.

Why we sold Pritchard, chadli loaned nije and odwua, and brought 2 players who don't play in MS and Nkoudou.
To a degree but since the first game we played 3-4-2-1 this season, we have played 10 league games using 4-2-3-1 and he is only made it off the bench twice, and on 2 occasions he hasn't even made the bench and that's with Lamela out injured the entire time.

I'd like

Barkley
Sessegnon
More mobile, pacey 2nd striker
Right sided centre back
Possibly a creative no 10, if Edwards isn't deemed ready yet

I'd lose

Davies or wimmer
Have a feeling one of Dembele or lamela will go
I guess one of njie and nkoudou will go
Janssen, before his stock falls further

I'd keep Sissoko, for the record, but play him centrally if Wanyama, Dier, Winks etc were rotated. Not behind the striker.

Some players don't work out. It's the same at every club in the world. It's about getting more right than wrong though in order to improve as a team, and so far under Poch that is exactly what we have done.

I personally think that Pritchard would have excelled in the Alli/Eriksen role behind Kane, shame we didn't give him a chance in the first team...

Although nobody could have predicted this change in formation, and the money that we got offered was too good to turn down imo

I do think that for players like N'Koudou, Sissoko, and even Janssen or Onomah - guys who do not get much playing time - their long-term future is tied more to how they perform in training, than in matches. If Poch is pleased with their training effort, then I think they stay.

This is probably more true for younger players than Sissoko - but you could argue that Dembele was in the same spot as Sissoko just two seasons ago. Dembele went to Poch and asked what he needed to do to get more playing time - and then did what was required. If Sissoko were committed - I could see a similar turn around, and if he is not committed in training, I could see him sold.

ETA - a caveat, as always, if Poch needs to sell players to raise enough transfer funds then any peripheral player could be sold.

Are you certain about that? This is partly subjective, however these are transfers in under Pochettino:

Davies, Vorm, Dier, Yedlin, Fazio, Stambouli, Alli, Wimmer, Trippier, Alderweireld, N'Jie, Son, Wanyama, Janssen, N'Koudou, Sissoko

Out of these, undoubtedly successful improvements are:
Adlerweireld, Wanyama, Alli, Dier

Undoubtedly unsuccessful are:
Yedlin, Fazio, Stambouli, N'Jie

Useful, but not truly successful improvements in my mind are:
Davies, Vorm, Trippier, Son(?)

Really not successful in my mind so far are:
Sissoko, N'Koudou, Janssen, Wimmer

Is that really, in strictly objective terms, more right than wrong? I surmise that our lacklustre transfer performance over three summer windows with Pochettino is the only reason why we are not at the very top of the table right now.

Davies, Vorm, Trippier and Son have been successful i'd say. They have their roles snd they do it well. Hell, there is a strong argument to be made that the presence of Trippier and Davies have helped push Rose and Walker along to become the best left and right backs in the league.

Absolutely agree, and as I said I fully accept that there is a real portion of subjectivity in passing these judgment. But from an overall perspective, I truly do question whether we really have gotten more rights than wrong over three summer windows put together.

Not sure if you are just trying to be controversial for the sake of it, but Davies Vorm Trip and Son have all played plenty of first team games and "in my mind" are very important squad players. we play over 50 games in a season, and not everything is about the first 11. The jury for me is still out regarding GKN, Janssen and Wimmer.

I would put Davies as one of the most important signings of Poch's era.

If you will recall, we had no adequate cover for Rose, and thus we were playing Vertonghen at LB - and he hated it. Bringing in Davies - who many assumed was actually going to be for the 1st Team - was critical to re-assuring Vertonghen that his future was as a CB. Then you add on that we also re-newed Rose that same summer, which gave Rose the confidence to kick on with competition from Davies. The Davies signing, almost single-handedly improved/stabilized two positions.

Vorm - there simply are not many (any?) back-up keepers of his quality in the league.

Trippier - definite upgrade on Naughton, and many here still want him to start over Walker - due mostly to his end product. Hard to label him as anything other than successful. Certainly can't hold Walker's improvement against him

Son - I am not sure why you would not rate Son, he is capable of playing in any of 4 spots, depending on formation, and gives us quality flexibility - and goals.

All'right, fair enough, in which case 8 out of 16 signings have shown their importance. Clearly transfers is something we can improve on moving forward.

I find Son incredibly frustrating at times, but I still think he's been a massive success for us. He may not be of the same level as our best XI, but he's as good as a backup player could possibly be. And that's an incredibly important thing to have in the squad.

I haven't seen anyone slag Nkoudou and say he isn't good enough, but I think it is a safe bet that if he only played 36 mins in the PL when we played with 3 AMs and Lamela was injured, then reducing the number of AMs we use to 2, is probably going to mean he is going to be moved on. Njie played more in the PL and he was injured for 5 months.

That's not what I mean. I didn't say people slagged Nkoudou, just that nobody cares about him and they already count him out, whereas Janssen is in a similar situation and they insist with him in a way they don't with Nkoudou.
My guess would be that because we need a striker, but imo we also need someone like Nkoudou that can break lines with skill and pace
