The fact is we are a one paced team. Its very easy to defend against if everything's in front of you. for us to get in behind teams now it generally either has to be rank bad defending or a perfectly timed run and pass from deep. You need to offer that threat in behind imo. I'd bet if you asked any defender at any level from any era what is the hardest thing to defend against I would guess pace would be the one thing they would say. you obviously need ability and composure as well so I'm not sure why people keep on bringing up Townsend saying, see pace doesn't matter. Not only that, I actually only think Townsends pace(which I don't think is that great) is with the ball over long distances. I don't think he has that burst over five-ten yards with or without the ball. I don't believe you need pace to be a good player but you do need pace as an ingredient In a team, definitely.
Poch's system relies on pacey fullbacks who stretch the defense and can create space for the AM's to work inside. Chadli comes in from the left, and Lamela from the right. We have that with Rose at left back. At RB, we should have that in Walker, but he never really tried to get the ball in the box when he got into the wide area(and neither did Townsend from RW). Now that Walker is hurt, we have Dier at RB who is slow, so he rarely gets behind the back 4 and is unable to create space for Lamela to work. We should be playing Yedlin at RB right now, as he has a good cross on him to go along with his pace. That should open up space for Lamela to operate.

And Dier's 2 Assists last week...?

Either way our defensive record is dire.

yes, though personally i think fans miss the point. they see goals conceded and their solution is new defenders, it's about much more than that. this same set of defenders could have the best defensive record in the league if the team was set up in a way that protected them better and as they say, defending begins from the front. the other is that it's very difficult to improve one end of the field without affecting the other, i'm sure we could become more defensively robust but it's likely it would be at the expense of our ability going forward, it's a difficult balance to achieve.

Dier is not at all slow, either.

That has so little logic it makes my head spin. Because we bought someone who did well in Italy and didn't do great in the PL, it means we should buy someone who has been poor in Turkey (a significantly weaker league than Italy) and they'll suddenly become great in England? Do you think the defenses are better in the Super Lig than the Prem? That it is easier to score at Anfield than it is at Istanbul Basaksehir FK? Or has Fenerbahce been using Emenike all wrong, and he'd be a fantastically better fit for Pochettino? I seriously wanted to hear your rationale for this player, and saying "because Lamela" does nothing to justify it.

Well first of all, he interchanges & plays with Mousssa Sow, playing at times as central striker. No wonder you plucked this stat from site without looking at the context. He has 4 goals & 5 assists in league but he has played just 1500 min & significant amount of that from wings.

Which is odd one out ? A player who has scored 15 goals in one season or player who has scored 12+ goals for 4 seasons (in a leage which plays just 28)
I am sure your head spins because you look at the numbers without any context.

Anyway , I would like the comparison to end here - as there is no point debating a player from 2 different leagues.

All I would say is he had a brilliant world cup & very good seasons at Spartak & Fenerbache. He is good in all 3 positions upfront, which is a rarity. For a few millions, I can see him doing a good job unlike atleast 2 of our current players.

True but we certainly don't have very good defenders either!

Disagree with respect to Dier.
Just rewind 34 games to the first game of the season...Who scored the winner from which position ? Kane put the through ball in. It was Dier who was shifted to RB spot later in the game, got behind the West Ham back 4 & nicked the winner.
Again last week, assisted 2 beautiful assists from RB , one of them a great cross. Walker has a very good attribute in pace. But this season fact he hasn't delivered from that position.
Dier isn't slow, he is our fastest CB if I am not wrong. He has the one of the best footballing brain in our squad & is one of the most productive players. I cannot compare Dier with Yedlin having just seen 10 minute of him. If Dier doesn't mind playing RB, I would rather have him than Walker in their current form

Poch is being very vocal about wanting big players this summer.
Levy not going to like that I imagine

I am not sold on Thauvin yet. I am afraid he will be another one of those expensive (for what they can offer) players who we will later realize later as mediocre.

My worst case scenario is to go for someone from our own league - Mirallas or Bolasie. Atleast we know what we are getting

Thing is Thavin is a left-footer and I would pas and presume, as Poch plays with inverted WF, he'll play on the right, as opposed to Mirallas and Bolasie, who're right-footers (and will thus play on the opposite side).
