Match: ____ Champions League Final - 2019

When: _____ Saturday June 1st 2019

Where: ____ Estadio Wanda Metropolitano, Madrid

Kick off: ____ 8:00 pm GMT

Team Form: _____ Spurs LLLWD________Liverpool WLWWW ____ (All Competitions)

Liverpool are playing in their 9th European Cup / Champions League final – more than any other English side. The have won the trophy 5 times, but have lost their last two finals (2007 and 2018). We are playing in our first ever European Cup / Champions League final, and are the 8th different side to do so. The last five first-time finalists have ended up on the losing side (Chelsea 2008, Arsenal 2006, Monaco 2004, Bayer Leverkusen 2002 and Valencia 2000).

This will be the second all-English European Cup / Champions League final, with Man U beating Chelsea on penalties in 2008 in the other. This is the first Champions League final between two sides who both failed to win their respective groups since Inter- Milan vs Bayern Munich in 2010.

Liverpool won both their league meeting against us this season. In total, we have met at least three times in all competitions in 13 previous campaigns – Liverpool have only beaten us 3 times in a single season in one of those (1985 86 – 4 times). The only previous meeting between us in a major final was in the 1982 English League Cup Final, with the Reds coming from behind to win 3-1 after extra time. Liverpool were the losing finalists in last season’s final – the last side to lose consecutive finals in the competition were Valencia in 2000 and 2001.

This will be our first major final in any European competition since the 1984 EUFA Cup. We are looking to become just the 3rd English side to win all 3 of the major EUFA tournaments after Chelsea and Manu (European Cup / Champions league, EUFA Cup / Europa League and Cup Winner’s cup.
Liverpool have lost their last four appearances in major domestic and European finals since winning the 2012 League cup. Meanwhile, our last major trophy win was also the League Cup (2008), losing our last two finals since then.

We have failed to win any of our opening three Champions’ League group stage games this season – we have become just the second side to do so and go on to reach the final after Inter-Milan in 2010, who went on to win the trophy.

Only FC Porto (10) have had more different goal scorers (excluding own goals) in this season’s Champions League than Liverpool (9). No team has conceded more goals in this season’s Champions League than us (17). 41% of these goals have come in the opening 15 minutes of games (7/17).

This is Jurgen Klopp’s 3rd major European final with Liverpool – only Bob Paisley (4) has sever reached more with the club.

Poch is only the third Spurs manager to guide the club to a major European final, after Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkenshaw. Its only the 2nd final he has reached during his time as a manager in Europe, after 2015 League Cup final with us (0-2 vs Chelsea).

This is it folks. A significant part of our history can be written on Saturday. Nothing more to say that hasn't already been said in other threads leading up to this match. COYS!

"Spurs will become champions of Europe"

Sounds crazy. It's so hard to believe that 1 win against Liverpool will cement the finest moment in our history and create a legacy for generations to come.

I can't believe that I'm going to miss the most important game of our recent history and certainly the biggest game of lives as Spurs fans. Little did I know that a year ago, booking a wedding (a wedding photographer) would mean me missing the most important game ever. I think we can pull this one off. Something is telling me that this season was meant to be for us. The injuries, the stadium fiasco, the lack of spending - everything we did brought us to where we are now. Matchday I won't be able to get on here - let's hope Saturday night when I eventually get home (long after the final whistle) that we are basking in the glory of being called Champions of Europe! COYS!!

I know it's easier said than done, but we need to try and enjoy the whole event regardless of the outcome.

When the dust settles we'll still be going back home with a great squad, a great manager, the best footballing infrastructure in the world, a few quid to spend in the transfer window and Champions League football again next season.

That said, it would be absolutely amazing waking up on Sunday morning, Champions of Europe!

I was watching the clip from the UEFA Cup Final in the 'On this Day' thread (for which many thanks, @TheChosenOne) and I'd forgotten how the Spurs crowd reacted when Danny Thomas missed the penalty that would have won us the game. They didn't shout 'FFS, Danny', or 'get rid' or 'I told you he was shit'. Rather, they spontaneously burst into a rendition of 'There's only one Danny Thomas' in support of a player at the lowest ebb in his career.

I know it's asking a bit much of the Match Thread, but these players have come through a ridiculous number of injuries and setbacks to drag this team to potentially its greatest ever triumph. In many ways, one could argue they shouldn't be there. But they are there and, in many other ways, they absolutely deserve it for their bravery, their mentality, their never-say-die attitude in this competition.

So, if at all possible, it would be great to have a little more of the 'One Danny Thomas' attitude in this thread and a little less of the 'Oh, fuck off, Trippier' approach. Asking a bit much, I know, but, hey, worth a try.

Oh, and if you haven't seen the 'On this Day' thread of which I speak, enjoy...

No matter what happens on Saturday evening (though we're winning) let's not turn on eachother in here.

This season has provided moments & memories that are extremely unlikely to be repeated in our lifetime. Be grateful for what we've had & enjoy the occasion.

We've got what it takes to win this, but if we don't, my biggest wish is that the traveling fans give the team the love, respect and gratitude for taking us this far. I want our players to wear their medals with pride, whatever the colour, unlike the arsenal bunch yesterday who couldn't take them off quickly enough.
