For those of us who feel the ref was a tad biased in his decision making last night, wait til the return leg! Once Roman has waved a can of Novichok in the ref's face, it's gonna be absolutely laughable!

I like the way it's taken this long for being Chelsea coach to totally destroy Sarri. For the first 3 months of the season, every time he was asked about a refereeing decision, for or against, he just said I never talk about the decisions of the officials.

Cut to: Sarri waving his laptop around in a television interview pointing at a line drawn on the screen with a biro by the kit man.

The flag went up so late though

They should have learned this in grade school, but you play to the whistle because it is not mandatory for the ref to recognize the AR's offside call. They almost always do, but players should know to play through the whistle. Saying that they were distracted by the flag means they were praying for offside because they had just been done by a better pass and run.

Linseman have been instructed to raise their flag if they believe that the attacker is offside, it's down to Chelsea to learn to play to the whistle.

VAR is fine, players just need to adapt to it and learn how to use it quickly.

I read in the Daily Mail through Clattenburg that apparently where its marginal like the incident yesterday the linesman has been instructed NOT TO raise their flag.

The real issue is what is marginal offside to you and I may not be marginal to the person closest to the incident in this case the linesman.

I think the incident yesterday will discourage linesmen from making any sort of decision with fear of controversy. They will only raise the flag when its totally obvious and there is clear daylight of the offside.

I was afraid Lamela was going to get a 2nd yellow or straight red pretty much the whole time he was on the pitch. Not a popular opinion on here but I think his yellow was deserved, thought he committed the foul when he went on goal and was just hoping he would calm down a little. I love his aggression but he walks a fine line especially when he comes in during big matches.

Agreed. I think the part of the rule about any part of the body that can score is such an odd one. You can score with your head and with an attacker sprinting forward it's likely that their head will be closer to goal than their feet, whereas a defender stepping up would have their feet closer to goal than their head. It brings the angles into play which seems like an unnecessary amount of faff.

If the rule was clarified to focus on feet only I think things get much clearer and VAR could be used more effectively. Perhaps it would add some extra advantage to attackers at set pieces - they can have their head be offside and then score from a header for example - but is that such a bad thing? The defenders have extra time to prepare at set pieces anyway, and more goals in games generally leads to more exciting play. You could even introduce tracking chips into socks/boots, or use an extended hawkeye system to track boots and take the guessing element out of it if you wanted... sounds crazy and "impure" but if tech is coming let's make it good.

Saying all that, you can definitely see why Chelsea and their fans feel a bit miffed - I'm sure we would be the same. Chelsea played better than us, Hazard was a class above anybody else imo and Hudson looked well worth them hanging on to. A lot of their possession was probably a symptom of basically playing 6 in midfield although that was also the reason so many of their efforts were from range.
i really don't think chelsea played that well, they applied pressure but attacking wise they were limited. So many times they put in crosses as well but only had Hazard in the middle and he won't win anything in the air. It reminded me of previous games for us where we dominated the ball but did nothing serious and lost or drew a game.

Re: Lamela
Sometimes he runs around like he is possessed by a demon... but this aggression and pressing is second to none and often cause huge trouble for the opponent to get their game flowing

Did anyone hear the commentator say ‘Gazzaniga’ at any point? I noticed it early and every time he made a save the commentator would talk about who took the shot. Clean sheet for Gazza. Solid again, nice footwork under pressure too.

I heard Tyler say Gazza didn’t fumble it this time.

Sardis didn’t flash the laptop about to make his point. Sky cameras filmed him being shown the laptop by a Chelsea official.

Chelsea won and controlled the midfield in the second half, but they didn’t teally have a clean chance on goal. Most were pot shots from outside the area.

If the linesman isn’t sure he shouldnt raise his flag. That’s why the Benefit of Doubt to the attacker is important. You cant penalise them for something you haven’t seen.

A couple of things I noticed.

Chelsea know they are toothless in attack, as they kept taking long distance pot shots, you can tell they are lacking in confidence going forward.

I can't remember the last time I saw such a one sided Spurs game not in our favour. If we play like that in the return leg we are going out, however, I don't think we can play much worse as an attacking and midfield unit, so there's that. I think the away leg will work in our favour as we are better away from home. That said, Son is a huge miss as he is pivotal to our counter attack.

Our CM was non existent last night.

It was a bit like an old AVB Spurs performance in some ways... pretty toothless and relying on Bale (Hazard) to try and do something amazing. But I think they pressed really well and dominated the midfield area for long spells. We defended well I thought but on another night that could easily have been 2 or 3 to Chelsea. Sometimes those long shots are unstoppable.

But thankfully it wasn't and we can go into the away leg reasonably confident. We weren't the best team on the night (imo) but still got the win, so even if we are pinned back that much again we can have belief in getting the result needed.

Var doesn't come into it. Refs have overruled offside flags numerous times and played on, because they believe it's wrong. The linesman is there to help and advise the ref and nothing more. From 6 years old players are told to play to the whistle and it doesn't change just because they are in the prem. All that is immaterial anyway, because even if they had of played on, he was 5 yards beyond them and they weren't catching him anyway.

Yeah AVB came to mind, it was possession footie for the sake of it. I did keep yelling a the TV though when Barkley was getting into those positions for long shots, luckily we blocked and closed them down in the last parts of the pitch.

Presumably if Chelsea sign a striker in the next 2 weeks he can't play in the second leg? Would he have to have been registered before the first?

Honestly don't remember Gazza having to make any real top class saves. Deflected cross perhaps, but that was it. Every shot of note was outside the box and comfortable to deal with for him. Just because they had all the ball, and we didn't offer anything up front, doesn't mean we weren't in control. I never felt nervous when they attacked. Defensively we were class. Best defensive performance of the season for me.

FFS, I mean if its so hard to tell the benefit should go with the attacker.

Obviously offside is offside but there are times where you could look at it for several minutes and still be undecided. In that case the benefit should go with the attacker.

Is that really that difficult to understand?

What's next, looking at the strands of their hair ?
Is my question difficult to understand? You haven't answered a very simple question. Why should the attacker get the benefit of the doubt? Why shouldn't it go with the defender?

Pretty sure of it yes, didn't that happen to us once before for a player.

He's an excellent shit house when we want to close out a game. I love seeing him come on with 15 minutes to go in a tight game.

I am still steaming about that Ledley was two foot away so if Chelsea are gutted and losing sleep over tonight's game I'm pleased.
I heard about Sarri and his computer on the radio driving home, how fucking pathetic is that, embarrassing or what?
Honestly I wasn't stressed at all tonight I'm sure the stats will show lots of shots from Chelsea but our keeper simply caught almost all of them, it's not like he had a worldy is it, we let them take the game to us more than many people will be comfortable with but we gave a very fine defensive display that they couldn't beat.
That’s not forgetting 2 goals given to Chelsea that did not even cross the goal line...
