He's not exactly young so if we can find a PL proven replacement it makes no sense to give him another season. So much of his game is class but at the end of the day we payed £26,000,000 for someone to score goals, which he didn't do.

According to a few reports we only paid £13m upfront with the other £13m being performance related (CL qualification)

Not sure how true it is but it's plausible IMO

Buying Rodriguez when he is not going to be fit for at least 3 months is a great idea. We need more players who can't play.

If those details are true (big if), seems extremely plausible. They'd pay that £13m fee most likely, and we must be aware that his value is only going to diminish further unless he has a dynamite season (and then suddenly, if he hits targets, we'd be back up to £26m land again for a guy getting near 30). Part of me would be gutted as I so want him to prove everyone wrong, but with a business head on, you can see why this makes sense. He doesn't seem like he'd particularly suit Poch's setup anymore than he did AVB/Sherwood's

Personally would rather replace Adebayor (Lukaku would be ideal). His wages are set to rise, his attitude is questionable and there are question marks over his compatibility with Pochettino. One thing you cannot question with Soldado is his attitude and effort, and I think we might see a decent season from him this year if we stick with him.

The guy has scored tons of goals in Spain (101 in 207 games), played for Real Madrid and has represented his country.. one of the best teams in the world. I think it would be a big mistake to sell him. Maybe if we had kept the same manager, but we havent. New manager, new style of play. Especially if we've only paid £13m for him.

We have seen some signs of brilliance from him.. I say keep him. He might be 30, but he's play isnt around pace.

Soldado was consistently a top forward for us... Just because he bottled it on his open play finishes in his first season for us doesn't mean he isn't cut out for the Premiership. His inadequacies were down to form, nothing else and form can be fixed.

No kidding.. I couldn't say it any better!

We've been linked to Remy almost as many times as we've been linked to Damiao. Yawn.

Catch £22m (pun)
He stays and improve a bit, we pay the add ons. He'd have to score 30+ goals to make it worth it.
He stays and doesn't improve, £13m becomes a waste of money that we could have recouped.
I'd be astonished if levy passes up an opportunity of recovering his money. He's only on about £55k a week iirc, no problems finding a taker unlike Adebeyor.

I wouldn't sell him.

There might be question marks over his first season, and his age, but the guy exudes quality and it's not like we are flush with senior model pros. Soldado will come good, I've never doubted that. He also has another 5 years at the top level at least.

Despite a poor first season, he is a more a complete footballer than I thought we were getting. Far from being just a goal-poacher, he has already shown glimpses of his ability to adapt to playing with his back to goal.

You can see that he is an intelligent footballer. To get the best out of him we should be surrounding him with other intelligent footballers, not trying to force him out and replacing him with a battering ram.

Can you link me to where you have read this, or is this just what you have made up because it sounds good? I cannot find a single word to back up your statement?

You must have been watching a different soldado to me. A few penalties and a few half decent passes aside, he was anonymous more often than not and missed sitters at an amazing rate.

I've seen it cited in numerous articles on Pochettino's appointment. Adebayor is apparently a notoriously poor trainer who might not take well to Pochettino's well documented double sessions. Of course this is all speculation, but there is certainly enough evidence historically to suggest that Adebayor can be a disruptive influence.

In any case, Lukaku would be a similar type of player to Adebayor but younger and arguably more consistent, so if there was a chance to get him, and remove a potential troublemaker from the squad, I would take it.

I'm not trying to start anything fellas, but it'd be nice to get accurate info about our own players once in a while.
Bobby is 28 yrs old....Just an FYI ;)
Otherwise, really good points, both of you. (y)

PS. Apparently he just turned 29 two days ago.
Apologies. :sorry:

Yep he's just turned 29, and my whole point was that after another season he'll be nearly 30. You have to factor in another season for him to have "proven everyone wrong".

Put it this way, if Soldado was some young guy through our ranks would people say he was good last season? He was shocking. Kane looked better than him now is that down to form, a whole seasons worth, or he doesn't like the prem? It needs to be worked out and I think we have to sell if we get right offer, what if he gets no better next year? We won't win a lot of games with a misfiring striker

This guy is a top player but his game is completely unsuited to the Prem. He doesn't have the strength or power to play as a lone striker and we won't play two up top often enough to get any value.
