Lovren, Lambert and Lallana would be three great signings for L/pool and would help them get above/stay above us however you look at it they, Ive read this morning that they have sold Suarez to Barca so, if true, without him they will not repeat last season and will be challenging for 5th/4th exactly the spots we want to challenge for, we should go all out for Lovren to stop this happening. Levy has the scales tipped in our favour with Poch and he just needs to write the cheque n get it done.

I hope this does materialize; I am reading on other websites that Lovren is looking forward to going to Liverpool.
Is D.L.serious about this or will it be one that got away?

to borrow an 'arry catchphrase, "He's a top top player" but why is it Saints scouting system picks up these gems like Lovren and Schneiderlin, and we pay top dollar 12-24 months later??? Barcodes with Cabaye another case in point.
Yes it would be great to have one or both of them at WHL for the coming season, but why are our scouts not unearthing the up and coming stars rather than splashing a large part of our budget on a few players.
Berba, Modric, Bale were all relative gambles, and of course some of our foreign signings were nowhere near as successful. I'm just nervous of buying these players at the top of their value curve, rather than earlier in their careers?

This has been our problem in recent years

I think we somewhat got above our station and felt like we needed to start signing more established stars to be able to compete with the top teams in the division and smash through that glass ceiling

We had great success prior to our CL qualification signing relatively unheard of players who were not quite on the radar of the bigger clubs and developing them into players who were becoming world stars and dramatically increasing in value.

It is sad, in my opinion, to see us trying (unsuccessfully more often that not) to compete with the likes of Chelsea, Man City or Man Utd to sign a player like Hazard, Willan or whoever when before we had built a solid base for success by signing the likes of Bale, Berba, Modric

I understand that some of this is because other clubs have widened their net and indeed more clubs are now competing for the types of players we scout when they perhaps previously would have overlooked them

I do however feel like in the not so distant past it would have been us picking up the likes of Benteke or Bony, Schniederline or Lovern from lower level leagues and watching them develop into top stars with us.

I think a big part of this is the fact we dismantled our DOF football under Harry and focused heavily on bringing in experienced players for short term success (or maybe we decided to leave some of the long term successes to emerging talent in our youth system)

I do however hope that now Baldini is in charge we see less Soldado type signings and more Bale and Modric's (ok maybe that's unreasonable to expect that level of talent but we should at least be beating the likes of Swansea and Villa to Benteke and Bony when we were in need of striker of their caliber

That's the spirit.
Doubt that Lovren will be able to make up for losing their one man team though...
My thoughts exactly. Not to mention that now, they'll be playing in Europe. I think (or rather I hope) that this season thing's will be a lot closer between us now.

Obviously comes down to how they reinvest the funds... but other clubs have sold their prized asset and not been to successful when also having European football to deal with. There was an example recently but cannot for the life of me remember who it was...

I'm not being a loser by facing facts mate; we were pathetic at the back last season but so were Liverpool. By obtaining Lovren we can not only strengthen ourselves but deny them a quality defender. Even with the Suarez money they may not be able to find quality Centre-Backs.
I also think the scousers won't exactly be toothless when they lose Suarez; both Sturridge and Sterling should improve next season, plus they now have more goals in Lambert.

:hilarious:

For the record I don't think I called you a loser.

But with almost a month before the season kicks off, and two before the TW closes, I think its a bit premature to be calling the Lovren deal as the decider in a mini race with Liverpool ...

He's gone, forget him. Move on and let's hope that Baldini has someone else in mind because we we desperately need another CB.

Sorry if I gave the impression that you called me a loser....I did say "mate" to try to avoid any possible personal comments from developing.
I also didn't say the Lovren deal was a "decider"v's Liverpool. I only pointed out that the Lovren deal would/could be a real factor in the race,
I also disputed your assertion that Liverpool are not much without Suarez -which other than highlighting that part of my post - you didn't really respond to.

Lovren isn't worth 18m. If Liverpool want to pay that it's fine by me.

Not for 18m. Looks like they will buy a lot of players after selling Louis. They will need time too gel. But are players are fresh this year with 1 year under there belt they can only get better. Eg: we only need a cb, left back and a forward.

If his head's at Liverpool, perhaps he has the same agent as Alfredo Garcia.

All good. (y)
I highlighted the Suarez bit because of the 'toothless remark' which given recent circumstances I found hilarious.

Liverpool Suarez' impact on them was HUGE and can very well be compared to the impact of Bale on us. Granted they are a good team, but replacing Suarez 70 goals in 110 games won't be easy and I expect them to finish outside the top 4 this year. Whether we finish above them or below.. well that is just too early to tell. They may well sign Lovren but that is just one defender - they will most likely need to get another 3 with Skrtel and Agger being off.
