what? we meet buy out clause and he wants to move to us? Not the players fault, the fathers fault or our fault

I think it left a sour taste in their mouths after developing the layer for 10 years and only getting c.30 games out of him. And how they felt bounced into it, with him refusing a new contract and demanding a move. But you're right, they agreed the clause (even if it was their predecessors) and all we did was to meet that clause.

The club set the fee, we met it. The club chose not to match our offer to the player (whatever it was) so the transfer went though.

There is absolutely nothing untoward here by anyone, other than Sporting

Slammed indeed. How will we ever recover from this?

There's no "slamming" going on in that statement at all, not even a hint of an accusation. Plainly they're displeased, but the statement is purely defensive. It explains to their own fans why they had to sell on these terms. The notion that they have "slammed" anyone has been invented by the journalist to sex up an otherwise tedious non-story.

Agreed. Sporting is my second team, being part portuguese, and the clause was clear. A little bit ruthless, but nothing more.

By the way, for 4m, this is great business.

Think the fans are unhappy, so just the clubs method of "deflecting" the blame to another party.

it happens, don't need to read so much into it.

Would like to see the original portugese statement. The only word there that makes it sound bad is "confronted". Think the journalist is trying to sex it up as David said.
