Based on itk update 377 from Jasper re siggy leaving.

Sorry on my phone and can't quote it. Could someone help please? Thanks.

Anyway what are most peoples thoughts?

I personally mentioned my thoughts in adebayor thread. For those that haven't read that, I mentioned that I wouldn't sell him unless he really wanted out or we got a crazy offer.

My reasoning is his age (21/22?) which means a lot of possible upside, his versatility which avb loves in a player and he has proven himself in the premier league albeit at swansea.

He seems really unpopular amongst spurs fans at the moment. I would appreciate other fans thoughts if they agree and why.

Let me know if I have done this incorrectly mods.

I think he's a good player but still lacking a little in confidence. AVB seems to think a lot of him so he'll be given a fair chance despite all the incoming players.

Looked very low on confidence last night, and his 'energy' is not right. Trying too hard, feels like its all going against him. I like Siggy, but not really that much i would miss him. Talented? Yes Works hard? yes. Got shown up by Tom Carroll last night? Yes.

Thats unfair. Stick Tom Carroll out on the wing and see how he does.

Despite that managed to get assist, key pass to another goal, hit woodwork, hit sidenet, played some very good passes and made some excellent runs off the ball (which our players didn't notice, he would benefit playing with Eriksen and Lamela).

Don't think he's anything but a decent sub who might hit a decent goal from range. I don't think it helps that he doesn't really fir any orthodox role well either, but he does tend to get muscled off the ball pretty easily and outpaced by slower players which signals a lack of drive and desire or maybe low confidence

It makes sense to me to sell if Eriksen is coming in, we maybe can still get decent money but if he doesn't get much playing time this season his value could drop

I'd love if Siggy stayed as a squad player, but I imagine he wants to play and will be unhappy in that role. He's collateral damage in Bale's transfer safa, I'm afraid. If we didn't get the Bale windfall to buy new players, I'm sure he'd stay and be an important part of the club. A really likeable player and I hope the best for him.

Horses for courses. Tom in his position was very very good, and outshone Siggy in his. Im not hating, but something is not working. Yes Siggy played alright, got an assist, but seems laboured in his play. It might be a case of he just doesnt work at Spurs. Better players than Siggy have had THAT moment.

I hope he comes good, but just cant see where he goes from here. Eriksen coming in, it will only get harder for him. If hes frustrated with himself now, with more competition he will suffer.

Now lets see your argument and reverse it... How well would Siggy have done in Carroll's position?

What would be unfair is to not recognise Carroll's performance as a highlight.

Can't say I was too impressed with Carroll last night. He was sloppy by his own standards, and gave away possession cheaply a number of times. I'd love for him to go out on loan to a suitable club, because he obviously has something about him. But I can't see him getting the sufficient amount of first team playing time this season.
He'll get the odd cup game, do well, and it will be pleasing. But it wont be enough to get him to the level he has potential to get to and be one of the main men on our midfield.

But since this is about Siggy, I'd like him to stay, but it's all about having a sane amount of players in the squad. We'll know by monday.

Hope he gets sold then we'll have corrected our two biggest mistakes last summer (Dempsey and him). He's not a bad footballer, he's just not good enough for where we want to be.

Disgusted by this comparison! Has tom carrol ever struck a fierce volley to score? Is tom Caroll an international player? The star of his country? We may well lose siggy, and carrol may be a top class player in the future, but for now siggy is miles and miles in front of tom.

If Tom Carroll played for Iceland he damn sure would be an international player.

Yep, Gylfi has 51 on 177 games in clubs, 20 on 48 in international games, youth and senior. It's quite a difference to say Townsend for example who has 14 in 128 games in clubs (and those are mainly on lower level) and 2 in 18 games on international youth games.

They're different players playing in different positions. Carroll is more of a regista whereas Sigurdsson is a number 10. Who was the better player yesterday? Gylfi certainly didn't look miles and miles better than Carroll. He barely imposed himself on the game. Sigurdsson is far more experienced, granted, but that doesn't make him a better player.

We have some player on our hands once he imposes himself on the game

I agree. He had some lovely moments, but he's not very influential in our play, he's more a peripheral player and I don't think he will ever become an influential player when he's playing as a no.10.

Would rather loan Carroll to Palace for a season and then make the call between the pair at the end of the season.

If Eriksen is used on the left a lot, Siggy will still get game time in CM.

Actually I think Siggy has more potential than Eriksen, he just needs some luck/confidence to really come alive.
