What i struggle with in this is either the supposed chelsea bid is bullshit? (Why would chelsea bid 25m before speaking to barkley to see if he was interested in joining them) or barkley wanted purely to join us isnt so nailed on.

Spurs face competition from Chelsea in £20million Ross Barkley bid

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a £20million bid for injured Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, but still face competition from Chelsea.

Despite the fact Barkley is set to be out for three months after tearing his hamstring in training, Spurs are readying a formal offer for the 23-year-old.

Talks between Tottenham and Everton are expected to take place this week, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy prepared to pay £20m up front, with the possibility of a further £8m in add-ons.

But, despite leading the chase for much of the summer, Tottenham and Levy do not have a clear run at Barkley with Chelsea also expected to make a bid of their own.

Chelsea have followed Barkley for many years and view him as a potential long-term signing who represents excellent value for money in the current market.

The interest in Barkley is not dependent on whether or not Chelsea sign Danny Drinkwater from Leicester City.

Everton wanted £50m for Barkley at the start of the summer, but were never likely to attract bids of that size with the England international entering the final 12 months of his contract.

The Goodison Park club still hoped to get £30m for Barkley a couple of weeks ago, but his latest injury has put them in a difficult negotiating position.

Levy did not want to pay more than £25m for Barkley, but now believes an initial fee of £20m, with the promise of £8m in add-ons, represents a fair price.

Tottenham banked around £4.5m from Gyfli Sigurdsson’s move to Everton, because of a 10 per cent sell-on clause, that could go straight back to the Toffees as part of the £20m Barkley fee.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will better that offer and the Premier League champions are not tied to such a strict wage structure, and could pay Barkley £100,000-a-week.

Tottenham see the attraction of working under manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has an excellent record for developing English talent, as a major advantage in their bid for Barkley.

Pochettino also believes he can offer Barkley better guarantees of playing time at Tottenham, even though he would start out behind the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Mousa Dembele.
This was posted over 20 pages ago. Seems like we are still 'preparing' our bid while the Chavs have upped the ante by £5 m.

If we do sign him, the club will have done well to get him...amazingly well. Game theory suggests we shouldn't be able to sign him as it's in neither of the other protagonists interests (Everton and Chelsea) for him to come to us. Given game theory is increasingly being used to inform these types of deals, a late move by Chelsea is predictable (and the likely outcome). If we get him, well played. Hope we're not trusting the word of agents though. Too much money involved for trust. The player himself seems to be key, if he puts working with Poch before money, we have a chance.

I'll be incredibly impressed by the players dedication to his career and with the club for making this deal happen - if he comes. Unsurprised if he doesn't.

Phil McNulty wr"iting up the transfer window run down wrote this in his piece on Ross Barkley:-
"To add to the intrigue, Barkley is expected to be out until October with a hamstring injury, so whoever (if anyone) buys him will first have to nurse him back to fitness."
There you go, he's obviously following his own information rather than just feeding off the single source for the player being crocked with a career ending injury.:)
I know some people won't want to believe him but there's just as much evidence to believe him as there is to believe the other pessimistic long term guesses.

I think what you misunderstood is that he may be out till October but how will he adapt to Poch's pressing game as an amputee?

If he joins Chelsea now, my god the meltdown will beat the Frazier Campbell deadline day swap for Berba!

This may work out in our favor. It may not. But going into the last two days of the window with only one confirmed signing is absolutely nuts. This transfer window is peak Spurs.

Too right, we are totally exposed with our lack of additions by this late stage in the window. Why we did not get Barkley signed after he came back from the minor injury he had earlier in the summer is amateurish Penny pinching promotes piss poor performance!
If we end up only filling the holes we have created in our squad by the sales we have made come the end of the window without adding something extra, I fear this will be the last summer transfer window Poch puts up with.

Wasn't it that Everton wouldn't sell prior to buying Sigurdsson, as they didn't want Swansea upping the price if they knew Everton had and extra £25m in the bank?

The more this drags on, the less I want us to sign Barkley.

I was massively in favour of us moving for him at the start of the window, as I think he's a great talent with loads of potential who could really thrive under Poch.

But the ongoing business with his injuries/operations coupled with the Everton ITK earlier saying his injury is worse than previously anticipated make this too much of a risk for me.

I hope we've got a decent backup to spend the cash on, and then *if* Barkley looks to be recovered by January we can go back in for him then for far less money as his contract will be almost up.
