A cold night in East London as traffic problems delayed the kick-off for 15 minutes as Pompey’s coach fought its way around the North Circular. But it turned out to be worth the wait – for the home fans.

A first glance at the teamsheet would not have filled Spurs fans with hope. Portsmouth were fielding five players with first-team experience, with Lauren, Mvuemba, Nugent Taylor and the legendary Djimi Traore all starting for the visitors.

Contrast that with a depleted Spurs reserve side. No less than three goalkeepers were missing, with Cerny and Forecast on first team duty and Alnwick on loan to Luton. Add to those O’Hara, Barnard and Daniels (out on loan), Boateng (injured) and Mills, McKenna Barcham and Taarabt (whereabouts unknown) and we had to dip into the Under-18s side to complete our squad.

With the game underway, the first half looked like it might go to form. Matt Taylor fired an early free kick just over David Button’s bar. Summer academy signing Yuri Berchiche was playing at centre back and was injured early on to be replaced by Takura Mtandari.

Spurs tried manfully to contain a lively Portsmouth side who unsurprisingly played with a lot of confidence. Jon Obika lost possession to Arnold Mvuemba who advanced on our goal before sending his shot low past Button’s right hand into the far corner.

Obika almost made amends when a half-cleared corner reached him. A quick turn left two players for dead and his low shot missed the left hand post. Soon after, Routledge sent over a good cross that Pekhart inexplicably failed to convert.

That was Routledge’s one useful contribution in the first half. He wasted a free kick, and when in a great position to score, opted to pass. Not the thing to do when the team is managed by our record one-season goalscorer. Clive Allen leapt to his feet with an encouraging cry of “Shoot for f**k’s sake!”

Simon Dawkins had a good run through the middle but was eventually brought down for a free kick. The half ended with Spurs beginning to come to terms and hold their own against the more experienced visitors.

The second half saw Danny Rose replace Jon Obika and a switch to 4-3-3 with Rose playing wide left and Maghoma, Livermore and Routledge spread across the middle. A Spurs side with two wingers? The idea!

From the off we upped the pace and were first to the ball with lots of hustle. Pekhart managed to concede countless free kicks in his battles without getting booked.

Ten minutes into the half and we were level when Routledge’s corner from the left seemed to hit Troy Archibald-Henville on the shoulder and fly into the far corner. A just reward for all the effort.

Danny Rose made an instant impact. My dislike of Taarabt’s myopic show-pony tricks is well-documented. Now here was a player with pace who gave us width and made good use of the ball. And he could use his right foot as well, as he showed when he picked up Routledge’s pass and sent a low cross in from the right that Maghoma stabbed home at the second attempt.

Special mention has to be made of Wayne Routledge. His second half performance was superb. He played like a man possessed. At one point he closed down Taylor on the byline, dispossessed him, turned and skinned him and then sent over a superb cross to Pekhart.

Another time he beat two men on the edge of the area and crashed a dipping shot against the bar. Next he closed down Nugent in our area, won the ball, beat Nugent and cleared. Then there was the time he burst through the midfield, was fouled, carried on, was fouled again and lost his boot – and still kept possession!

What the hell was he on and can we lay in several kilos of it for the future?

Jake Livermore got a well-deserved goal on 90 minutes when he fought his way into the area and shot home. Riley and Hughton had sound games at full back and young Mtandari played Nugent quite brilliantly in the air and on the deck.

Credit to Clive Allen for turning it around at half time. He made a substitution, changed the formation and tactics and sent the team out with a new attitude for the second half. He got his reward as we turned around the deficit and ended up controlling most of the second half and coming out comfortable winners.

Rose sounds bloody good, great to see the youngsters standing up to prem players when i saw Pompeys team i thought we were in for a hammering.

In other good news for our youngsters Dean Parrett and Andros Townsend played in Englands U17 6-0 win against Estonia with Parrett getting on the scoresheet.

Encouraging stuff, and a tonic after last night's depressing fiasco. Cheers, BOF.

Why is Routledge not being given a fair crack in the first team? Only saw him once at home, and scored a good goal which was disallowed and although didn't set the world alight, did enough to be kept in and around the first team, especially with Lennon out injured.

Nice to see the youngsters showing up the 1st teamers, maybe Clive should take Chrissies clip board off him. !!!

He has been injured, and there was a rumour (clearly bollocks) that he'd been cast into the outer darkness after refusing a loan move to Celtic.

Let's be honest, if Routeledge had ever shown the kind of performance that BOF has described here, he would have deserved a crack but he hasn't. Maybe he'll earn an appearance with a couple more displys like that.

BOF

Would you say that Rose was anywhere near being worth a place in the first team squad (bench or even team)? Real wingers (Lennon eg) are often able to figure at an earlier age than some other positions and we could desperately do with a pacey left sided threat.

Apart from Rose, who else would you say could/should make the grade of the current bunch of reserves/youth.

routledge was corking for palace... saw him many times down there..his final ball is 100% better than lennons, if he lacks some of lennons sheer pace

such ashame he did his foot on the first day of the season... i know it allowed lennon to blossom, but maybe we'd have been better served with routledge playing the lions share of games with lennon as his sub with 20 mins to go

BC - I think I'm right in saying that this was Rose's first appearance in the reserve side. Like Berchiche, he was bought to learn in the Academy team. With Bale (when fit), Tainio, Malbranque and even Lennon being used on the left for us, I wouldn't say there's any need to throw the boy in prematurely. Give him this season in the academy/reserves then maybe a loan spell to get him used to a higher level.

If you look at the list of missing players I think anyone likely to make the first team will come from that bunch. Mtandari looked good but like Charlie Lee (who we sold to Peterborough), lacks a bit of height for a CB.

You could say on his second half showing that Routledge deserves a chance, but we've been there many times before without success.

But, but, but.....BMJ has let me understood it's impossible to play with two wingers!!!

Cheers BOF, good report as always!

Good report BOF.

You have this inherent dislike of Pekhart don't you?

I think its more the fact that people keep piping up and saying they think Peckhart is ready for a first team place etc... When clearly by everything i've read on here he is nowhere near ready.

I can't remember anyone seriously suggesting Pekhart for the first team. He's a young lad who has a cracking scoring record for club and country mind you. I've seen little to nowt of him but just find it strange the dislike BOF has of him. Tis all.

Thanks for another entertaining report BOF.

Good result with a really young side; by my reckoning, apart from Routledge, only Riley, Maghoma and Dawkins are not still eligible for the U18s.

You never know, BOF. On Saturday le Guen benched four or five of PSG's underforming 'stars' and played teenagers in their place, including a 17-year-old as captain in his first league start.

They were still bloody awful, mind.

Good report BOF.

You have this inherent dislike of Pekhart don't you?

Not at all da - I really want to give good reports for all our players. But I'd heard so much about Pekhart and I must have seen him half a dozen times now and yet to see him score. All I've seen is him missing some pretty easy chances, like in this game. His overhead kick which was cleared off the line against Arsenal was about his best effort.

Then when he goes off to play with the Czech Under-20s team he's banging in the goals for fun.

If we don't see Taarabt, McKenna or Barcham in the squad tonight I'll begin to wonder what's happpened to them.

Thanks for the regular dose of the BOF Report.

So Routledge does have something about him then. We all thought he did when he joined but why does he hardly ever show it? I really can't see him making it. It sound promising about Rose though, I've never seen him play but have only heard good things about him so I'm still at the stage where I can imagine him breaking into the first team later in the season and playing out of him skin. The more down to earth side of me agrees with you about more time in the reserves though.
