I'm not sure if it's already been mentioned but did you know the referee gets to choose which end the penalties are taken?
I'd heard this before & sure enough it's in small print in the programme.
How can this work fairly?!! Surely a toss of the coin is the only way to do it.
I'm not for one minute saying it would've made a difference but it can't have made it easier to be faced with 40,000 boos.
Another highlight of top 4 favouritism?

When I reffed the reason given to us why the ref chooses the end was that he picked the area with less wear & tear ie the one in the best condition.

At a higher level he's in a no win situation. I don't think it would be too dificult to erect a portable goal and have the pens taken at the halway line. You only need a "penalty" mark, as the rest of the area is not needed.

To be honest I was happier to be taking at their end. Players generally have more pressure shooting towards their own fans as if they miss its right infront of them and all players wna raise their finger (not literally) at opposing fans...thats my opinion but agreed dont think we could have done much worse our end

this is wrong mate. He tossed a coin for the end, head for ours, tales for theirs. The he tossed again to see who went first, rio got to pick and he won it.

i think you should have it all your own way. If one team wins the toss and choses the take the pens at where there fans are the other team should be able to chose whther they wish to take first or second

No reason whatsoever why the penaltys have to be taken in one goal .

Why not let each team or even each player choose .

couldnt agree more, in my view it was a huge advantage for man utd, not that it would have changed the outcome !! :)

I'm not so sure, going into a friendly end must help with everyone keeping still.

I'm not so sure. The programme states 'at an end chosen by the referee', not down to a coin toss.

Sorry mate but thats a really stupid idea, not least the fact that it would take 10 times longer if each player swapped ends each time...they take long enough as it is

Can you remember the old trick of the fans behind the goal passing the orange pop bottle along - causes players to home in on the bottle with the ball. It made it vital that you took penalties in front of your own fans.

there was 2 coin tosses
it was shown on the big screens at wembley
still think it was a 2 headed coin and rio knew which side to call though
lets be honest the ref was on there side for the whole game anyway

I thought it unfair at the time that they should go first if the penalties were to be taken at their end. Fair enough if the ref has decided the end and then a toss of the coin decides who goes first, but to have two advantages can't be right.

Definately tossed a coin, I even heard the ref speaking on the TV said 'heads your end tails yours' as someone else has posted.
Maybe if we had 8 penalties to thier 5 we might have snatched a win.

Is there a reason why each goalkeeper can't have a goal? Gomes infront of the Man Utd fans, Foster infront of the Spurs fans? The only one I can think of is the ref has to run up and down the pitch but that doesn't bother me! lol

They could always use a linesman.
The thing that pissed me off was that they used the angled camera view from the sidlines and then showed the replay from the behind goal camera which would have been perfect to watch the penalties from.

The idea of each player choosing end is not good, but I can't see why the two teams can't shoot at different ends. That would be better for the fans too, as they come closer to the action.
