Real Madrid drop interest in Eriksen to pursue Zidane’s top target, Pogba

I think he simply wants to win major trophies, just like any player with ambition should. Sure we were in the champions league final but that is an anomaly for us.

For me as one of the top players in europe with his skill set he deserves to be paid much more!

Agree about the wages, but if we get our targets in surely he'll see the potential to win trophies at Spurs. This will be the kind of ambition to keep Eriksen and Poch happy where they are.

I know Poch rates and respects Eriksen, but if his head is gone, he wouldn't him corrupting the squad.

Sign, commit and stay, or leave this summer, in time for a replacement to come in and settle during a preseason.

United have said Pogba is going nowhere and Zidane has said he's the only midfielder RM are interested in....going to be interesting but if Pogba stays then Eriksen must be on ZZ's radar.

I highly doubt Pogba would want to stay at Utd

We got another year of fully-committed play from Luka Modric after his non-move to Chelsea broke down. I think Eriksen has a similar attitude: if he stays, he'll want to work hard and win.

It would also give us a year to develop and integrate the kind of replacement we are likely to be getting: either a player with no experience of English football, or an up-and-coming player from the Championship.

I entirely disagree with the notion that Eriksen lets his effort slip when he's out of form. If he isn't playing well, it's because his high-risk, high-reward passes aren't coming off. He still runs more than nearly everyone.

He's also got the rare gift of almost never being injured. It's an underrated trait (see also: Frank Lampard).
It is my belief that the Modric/RM deal had been muted during the Chelsea transfer saga...Levy perhaps saying "Give us one more season and we'll let you go". Luca stayed silent and gave us a last season to remember him by.
Eriksen should have not made that press release....he should have gone to Poch and told him his feelings to allow the club to deal with the matter discretely and amicably....
His last game of the season was on the biggest league football stage in the world against an extremely lacklustre Liverpool. His performance did little to bring the would be buyers flooding in. I know quite a few of our stars failed to impress but they haven't announced they wish to leave since then.
I just don't understand his logic and perhaps I'm old school but if he's not happy then he leaves....asap

I think you're being unduly harsh on him. He was asked questions about his future and I doubt any player would say they weren't interested in playing at a higher level if given the chance. He also said he'd be happy to sign another contract if it didn't come off. It's different to Berbatov, Modic and Bale who all pretty much refused to play once they thought they could move onwards and upwards. IMO, Eriksen needs genuine competition for his place and also opportunities to get a break - then I think he'll get back to his best. The ITK would seem to indicate that this is a very real possibility.

Pfft. No footballer deserves to get the wages they get.

If Real Madrid really have dropped their interest in him, would be interesting to see how this pans out and if he then signs a new deal.

Hope we still sign Lo Celso either way mind as need more competition and options.

Seems very likely to me that he doesn't want to go anywhere other than RM. What Eriksen needs is someone brething down his neck in a Spurs shirt instead of being a guaranteed starter regardless of form. He also needs an occasional rest to keep him fresh. We can't make him go to another team if he doesn't want to, much as it might seem the preferred option.

This almost 100%

I cannot begrudge him wanting to leave for RM if that is his choice.

Take the ludicrous money out of the equation and look at it as a job which is what it is. We all have our aspirations in our careers.

Was his last season his best?
No!

Did he give 100% effort everytime he played?
I would argue yes.

He signed a new contract before leaving Ajax to drive up the monetary value they would get.

I would not put it past the laws of reality to surmise he is doing the same this season.

No one knows what happens behind the doors of WHL. Only the presumptive shit-stirring press and some well informed ITK. And I cannot recall ITK stating he has thrown his dummy out.

If he stays for next season I am confident he will give 100%

Perhaps some competition in that position will drive him more and more importantly show our intentions.

Eriksen's not the type of character to half-arse it. He's a model pro and I'd wager his form dropped off either through lack of rotation or lack of competition - he was undroppable last season regardless of how well he was playing. You'd hope that if he stays he can not only have a bit more rest but will feel a bit of pressure from the likes of Lo Celso, or whoever we bring in.

The idea of Eriksen and Lo Celso in the same team...I just painted my ceiling.

He’s already said that he has a career plan. That’s great for him. But if he has his sights set higher than us then he should make sure his form reaches those heights too. Otherwise he’ll burn his bridges and find he’s not as sought after elsewhere as he’d imagined. He is a great player, but is he in the elite?
Yip, is say we're about his level tbh & he ought to recognize that

we can't allow him to leave on a free though, so even if he stays another year, he has to sign a contract.

If he doesn't sign, he needs to leave.
I don't think he can be forced to leave, any more than we can be forced to sell him. I think Eriksen, not THFC, has control of whether he stays and plays out his contract.

It isn't Pochettino's style to exile or bench him because he wants to run down his contract, as long as he is giving the team his all. And Eriksen has made it clear that there is a very limited number of options that he would prefer to staying on.

If there is nowhere for him to go, a one-year extension may be a suitable compromise, so the club has something to sell next summer.

agree with the one-year extension idea.

If he doesn't sign that, we are at risk of getting nothing for him.

I totally agree but with all due respect we had a similar scenario with Kane /Moura....and look how that panned out ?? What is the point of a player blowing like a hurricane down another's neck if he's not duly rewarded ??

That one's on Poch and could/should have been handled much better IMO.

Exactly...It just doesn't apply any pressure at all. I know I am very much one of the dinosaurs around here but I would have given anything to put on a Spurs shirt. I lived (still do) in a world of pride, respect and commitment. If the club deemed me worthy of wearing their strip then I would have burst lungs and shed blood by the gallon to repay that honour.
I watched the CL final in utter amazement at the effort put in against a side that were obviously not at their best and I'm sure if the likes of Bill Nicholson, Danny Blanchflower, Dave MacKay and a whole bunch of other long gone heroes were watching then tears were shed.

Every one who posts on here, regardless of their views and opinions loves Tottenham Hotspur and everything it stands for as a Football Club. For any one of us to be given a natural born talent with which we could express that love and passion for them on a football pitch would be an opportunity eagerly grasped. That has to work both ways, I want our players to also feel those emotions surging through their veins when they play, they need to be supporters too.

This club should never, ever be regarded as a stepping stone to a bigger and brighter future. It needs to be seen as the pinnacle of any footballer's career. Why should Real Madrid and Barcelona be the tip of the mountain ??. I totally resent Eriksen's claim that he needs 'fresh challenges' as I would any other player who came out with the same garbage. This club, your fellow players and it's managerial team managed to get you into a CL Final....how much more of a challenge/motivation to play do you need than that ??

Strange how when a certain level is reached players suddenly reveal a 'childhood ambition' to play for RM or Barca as if that is the ultimate accolade you can be awarded. These aren't players any more moving from club to club...they are businessmen moving from company to company. I completely understand the desire for financial gain and securing a future for your children but do it in a manner in which your family can look back and be proud when your playing career ends.

The days of the normal working man threatening his employer with taking his talents elsewhere have long since disappeared, it's a sad indictment that it still exists in modern football. I do not resent any player attaining as much success as he can within our beautiful game but I totally abhor and reject any player (regardless of which team he plays for) who announces to the world media "I'm available if you want me" whilst still under contract to another club. It's disrespectful, disloyal and represents everything rotten in this sport today.

"The old man shuffles towards the coat rack, removes his garment and walks quietly towards the door, head bowed in sadness and confusion at the modern world of football"......(n)

I question Eriksens dedication to us, should his dream move to anyone willing to pay more money fail to materialize.

He strikes me as some one that needs a new challenge (more money) every few years and, until he gets that, his output drops off.

I like the guy, he's done some great stuff. But I also think if his heads not in it and he's not 100% dedicated to us, we should actively look to move him on (abroad) and use the money elsewhere.

As I said previously...he's declared his intentions and I don't want anyone putting on a Spurs shirt next season with that attitude. Thanks for everything....there's the door. Nobody is bigger than the club and for him to say he'll stay if he has to I find insulting.

I'm with you both.

As much as he's said "but I'll be happy to stay if nothing better comes along" , it's still preceded by "I want to leave & try something new".

He's basically said he wants out but, fuck it, we'll do if nothing good enough comes along.

Doesn't float my boat at all & I'd hope it also doesn't float Poch's either.

Poch has been open about preferring to work with a smaller squad, so that means we need 100% commitment from every member of it. No player who has said he wants to try something new can be 100% committed.

This post is absolutely nothing to do with his ability.
