we obviously needed creativity and that's what Eriksen provided when he came in. It's so frustrating to see us play against an established and tight defense because there's basically no movement off the ball and too much time on the ball. Horrible game in my opinion, but then again I've been waiting for the season to start in excitement for so long my expectations was probably too high. Happy with the win, though :D COYS

Winks was playing long passes out to KWP most of the 1st half, him and Toby
Watch again, and count how many times Toby zap precision passes to KWP and Rose. Toby hits those laser guided passes at open spaces for the full backs to run on to.

Winks hit 2 or 3 the entire game and each time aims at the players static position. Hes not moving and opening up the game with his passes. If he wants to be Iniesta he needs to start being more foward minded, quickly passing the ball side ways and back ways looks impressive to some but thats all it does, its like CR7s stepover, lots and lots of stepover yet no progression, he didnt go past a single player...for what???

Winks wasn't on for the entire game, and he sprayed passes out to KWP. you will notice I said so did Toby

KWP looked like he belonged and will take a lot of confidence from that performance. Kane clinical at the end but Eriksen’s injection upped the tempo and quality and was the game changer.

This isn't a one off though, a lot of times last season Poch would set the team up in one shape and fairly quickly have to change it as the team struggled.

Obviously a game is 90 minutes and the opportunity is there to make changes and get a result, but it would be nice to start coming out with the 'right' game plan, especially when some of these issues/selections keep getting repeated and are now looking fairly obvious to the vast majority, but keep occurring. Towards the end of last season fans were starting to bemoan our slow starts and lack of first half goals, and the often needed early reshuffle of our starting tactics must be a huge part of that.

Yep his rigid formations were dour last season. I’m hopeful that the new mids will inspire him.

How was Rose awful and at fault for their goal?

Firstly Sanchez was at fault for getting too tight to the player he was marking and instead of following the danger he just kept grabbing the same player. Toby wasn't marking anybody and wasn't alive to the danger. No midfield player covered the run of their midfield player who scored. If they weren't going to cover the run either they pass him on to a centre back or the centre back calls the midfielder back to mark him.

Rose simply came across on the cover as a good full back should. The player had the composure to cut inside and finish. Nothing to do with Rose at all imo.

He wasn't great but he was strong, attacking and combative as always. There were far worse performances eg sissoko, moura.
Agree completely re Sanchez. He’s vulnerable to that high ball over the top on a counter. There have been similar situations in the past. It generally happens with a fast, physically strong opponent. He often panics, so he loses the flight of the ball, and goes into desperate grappling mode.

Toby and Jan, obviously more experienced, but less physically strong and fast than Davinson, deal with those high-ball, counter situations by either taking the foul early if they decide to body up into the attackers back, or actually back off so they have a few feet of a head start to track the attacker or other runners.

It’s just the awareness of developing threat and positional sense that great defenders have. It improves with experience, so hopefully that’s the case with Sanchez.

i stand by what i said in the match thread,

Winks needs to show more balls, he slows the whole game down by incessantly making back and sidepasses.Hes afraid to make things happen and thats not good enough for a number 8 who is supposed to keep the midfield ticking.

First half its all about our Centrebacks making those long passes. Winks need to show more responsibility, drive.the ball foward, do link up plays instead of constantly signaling players to play back passes with that outstreched arms.

Todays moral of the story is "To Dare is to Do" You win games by taking chances passing foward instead of fucking around the defensive perimeter getting 95% pass completion. Dembelee is epitome of our clubs motto today, him and Lo Celso; they are going to make things happen this season

Agree with this. Making all play go through Winks slowed our game down tremendously and showed a key difference between playmaking from him and Eriksen.

What I like most about Eriksen is that he facilitates play tremendously well and the game flows with him while for Winks, he tried to dictate but instead found himself swept along with the game without shaping it to our advantage in the 1st half.

I like Winks but he does not have the playmaking qualities we need to bring out the best in our players. This is especially evident with Ndombele who started to impose his game when Eriksen freed him with his playmaking.

Firstly, the villa forward backs into Sanchez and holds him causing Sanchez to wrestle with him to get himself free, by which time the ball’s over their heads and dropping halfway in spurs half, from Rose’s position on the pitch he should have been able to see the flight of the ball and Mcginn’s run, he watches the ball but doesn’t react to Mcginn’s run till it’s too late then dives in and throws himself on the floor instead of staying on his feet and maybe getting a challenge in.

He did the same thing at Brighton last year with Knockheart only then he chased back and fell on his arse without getting a challenge in, he watches the ball, but doesn’t react to the play till it’s to late!

I've watched the replay of the goal again, and I still reckon the biggest problem is that none of our midfielders track McGinn's run. That means a simple long ball creates a two-on-two on the last line, which is surely not the plan. If one of the midfielders tracks back, Sanchez being a little tardy in reading the depth of the ball and Rose being a whisker too deep to impact the initial contest aren't such an issue cos we've got the outnumber.

Anyway, after a lacklustre first half, I was actually very happy with the way we ran out the match.

Just glad the football's back, really.

Total domination really and the right result in the end. Standouts were Eriksen, Kane (in the end), KWP, Winks and Tanguy.

Rose was poor for the goal and aside from one cross first half, his delivery was erratic.

Sissoko was absolutely dreadful until 80mins and the game opening up. Let’s hope it’s not a regression to 16/17 Sissoko after last years renaissance.

CBs and Lloris were bystanders for the most part.

Tanguy showed glimpses of how good he will be when there is a bit more space. Have a sneaky feeling he’ll be seen in his best light in the most competitive games, as opposed to bus Parkers.

Kudos to Lamela for the pressing in the 86th minute that led to the goal.

We need to move heaven and earth to keep Eriksen. As clear as day how important he is. Everyone else’s level lifted when he came on. Just a chance to see Tanguy, Eriksen and Lo Celso in the same team is the dream!

A thing of terrifying beauty.

If Eriksen does sign a new contract, the window goes from being very good to excellent. Probably the best I’ve seen

Bit strong. I'm not making it up buddy it would be one of those things called a mistake. Live score have him down as 2 assists.

He got 1 assist mate, that was the 3rd goal, 1st goal was an assist from Lucas and the 2nd goal was scrappy.

Ndombele came to life when Eriksen came on, he needs to play with a quality no 10 the way he plays, and I agree he will shine in the bigger games.
Lets also not forget he's a young lad in totally new surroundings, he needs time and will be an amazing player for us.

Lot of good posts in here . I've only one detail to add .

In my opinion Rose didn't slip . He threw himself into the path of what he believed to be an incoming shot . Credit to the forward for feinting to shoot and sending him onto his arse ...good skills .
