So I wonder what happens to that EL winners qualifying place if the winner has already qualified via their league . I guess it opens up an extra place for someone somewhere to qualify. It should really go to the loser in the EL final or the 5th place in that clubs national league. But I guess they just a create another place in next seasons qualifying games.

Yup I guess that's sort of what they do, I don't agree it should go to the runner up though, you win you qualify you lose you don't.

It’s a maximum of 5 places, not a guaranteed 5 places. If the EL winner has already qualified via the league, it would just be the standard 4 places in the CL.

Bottom line, to qualify for the CL you either need to finish in the top 4 and/or win the CL or EL. 4th place would only miss out if English clubs won the CL and EL but didn’t finish in the top 4. If the winners of the CL and EL both finished in the top 4, the top 4 qualify.

I say this every year but can we just fucking sticky this somewhere.

To be fair, UEFA keep tinkering with it.

The other thing is that 4th place no longer has to play a qualifying round. They go straight into the group stages. Having 4 Prem clubs in the last 8 is also good news for our coefficients.

These rules have been in place since 2016 though :D

True, but it’s not as if they haven’t got a track record of changing them.

A sticky would be useful though. I find it a bit bizarre that people think losing in a final might lead to CL qualification.

Top 3 = CL qualification

Win the CL = CL qualification

Win the EL = CL qualification

CL and EL not won by Prem teams finishing outside the top 4 = top 4 get CL qualification

CL or EL won by a Prem team finishing outside the top 4 = they qualify for the CL with the top 4

This is too logical and rational, NOW what can I post a question about?

On a serious note, I wonder whether putting one CL slot up for sale to the highest bidder would be good for football. Rather than pumping fakely generated revenue into a club to buy players to buy a title to get a CL campaign, you could buy pass all that by selling one or two CL spots by way of holding an auction. Then the rest of the clubs could fight about signing players in a more natural and sustainable financial ecosystem, and not an artificially fuelled bubble.

I didn't think there was coefficients any more as the top leagues in Europe are all guaranteed 4 places in the CL draw?

It's the top 4 leagues in the coefficient table guarenteed those places. So it does matter but not as much, because now we'd have to fall behind Spain, Germany, Italy and France at the same time to miss out, which is unlikely when France only has one strong team.

I think a fit and firing Dele could be huge for us, I think he makes Kane and Eriksen perform so much better. Really hopeful that we can get a bit of form back and if we can then no reason not to be confident of securing Top 4.

Top 3 surely? 4th not guaranteed CL footy.

If you 538's projections for the chances of each team winning the European Competitions, the odds of us getting CL if we come 4th are 100% if it's United who finished 3rd, 99.74% if Chelsea finish 3rd, or as low as only 99.3% if Arsenal finish 3rd.

3rd is still better though because it increases the slice of the TV revenue you get for next year's tournament as well as an extra £2m or so from the Premier League. All in all we'll have earnt several million from last season's 5-4 win over Leicester to seal 3rd place. But it's nowhere near as crucial as just getting into the tournament.

Arsenal have got to play wolves haven’t they. What’s the betting the game is rearranged for the week before the semi final.
