Hi all,

Brief article on my new blog about AVB's style and system at Porto, Chelsea and how we could see it implemented at Spurs.

"With the formal announcement yesterday of Andre Villas-Boas’ installation as Spurs’ new Head Coach (raising the likelihood of a return to the continental system, incidentally), many supporters’ thoughts have turned to what sort of style of play and line-ups we can expect to see next season. While never really that successful at Chelsea (see my previous post), the “AVB system” at Porto was a brilliant success, and one which made him one of the hottest properties in football just 12 months ago. So what is this system, how was it implemented at Porto and Chelsea, and how might it work at Spurs?"

Nice article, I'd have Sandro rather than Parker though as his passing is better so he'd would fit AVB's system better.

Both articles are great reads and just shows how things need to be moved on, 4-4-2 seems quite out of date now. Also shows quite easily where we are currently weak, which is upfront obviously and on central defence, cant help thinking that the two players that are going to struggle in the system will be Parker (who i know has already been mentioned) and Dawson, just have a feeling he might be a bit like Terry was for Chelsea in this system, Dawson is prone to being caught out. where as Caulker is probably quicker. My Preferred Back line would be,

BAE, Vertonghen (fingerscrossed this happens), Kaboul, Walker with Caulker and dawson on the bench, but rotation will be a lot more frequent with AVB.

Agreed, whether AVB would see that as a long term situation remains to be seen but with the exception of Modric (staying or going) the current midfield could be tweaked in any number of ways to suit the AVB system. The striker would in my opinion be the most important signing though.

I wouldn't say he ever used a ball winner at Porto. Fernando was more of an Anchor man that didn't cover too much defensive ground with Guarin the box-to-box guy and finally Moutinho sitting near Fernando dictating the play.

I don't know how Villa-Boas will handle VDV (if he stays at Spurs), it'll be something new.

I think Huddlestone actually fits the sitting role although if we could upgrade on him then that would be great. I'd like to see Sandro get forward more and play box to box without compromising our defensive shape in front of the back 4. He should also be pressing high up the pitch too (same with Parker).

I wouldn't be surprised to see something more along the lines of;

Adebayor
Bale---------------------------VDV
Moutinho------Sandro
Huddlestone
Ekotto----Kaboul----Vertonghen----Walker
Lloris?
I can see VDV coming in from the right with Walker playing like a winger at times. I also like the work Sandro does down that right side too, so it would allow him to exploit space left by VDV on that side and double up with Walker.
Ekotto will also be encouraged to push forward and that will allow Bale to roam freely at times too. With the fullbacks pushing forward and the centre backs pushed up to the halfway line, the holding player will split the 2 centre backs.
Adebayor
Bale--------VDV
--------------------Sandro
^Ekotto------------Moutinho------------Walker^
Kaboul---------Huddlestone---------Vertonghen
Lloris?

Both articles were a great read, quite refreshing and very interesting, I imagine with AVB he will always be thinking and tweaking his ideas, a real student of the game.
He will just love Vertonghen, Ajax under De Boer converted back to the old Cruyff total football style the back end of last season and secured a maximum points haul of 24 in the last 8 games.
Sigurdsson played possession push and run and seems very switched on.
I think Parker is good for the team and squad, some of the negative views attributed to him in other threads are purely based on the back end of last season, before that he was superb, rested and rotated properly and used in the right games he will give us flexibility, which in turn means we can take all four competitions seriously.

I'm enjoying this thread.
I'd like to see a fit Hudd and Sandro in the midfield 3 + Moutinho ...would be mouth watering.
I'm not convinced VdV will be with us next season...just a gut feeling.
I'm also not convinced Ade will be with us either.
Do people see Sigurdsson as a straight replacement for VdV?

My understanding is that Sig would be one of the 3 man midfield,VDV might play midfield or right wing forward as AVB likes this player to cut in or drift into a central position, Hulk played there for Porto and he was also left footed, so in answer Sig would be an addition rather than replacement. I have my fingers crossed that we will see a stronger squad all round under AVB, Players for certain positions rather than a collection of individuals that Harry had outside his first 11.
I'm not convinced that Ade will be in the squad either...

Anyone else failing to see a place for Daws fitting into this setup? Just a worry, he's been a great servant but have we moved on from him?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm currently writing these in my lunchbreak so they're not up to journalistic standards just yet! It's certainly all about the midfield options with us and AVB, in my opinion. I also think he has learnt a little more since leaving Porto and won't be as set in his ways over midfield roles. I also fear for the likes of VdV and Dawson under him though, Dawson especially, I really don't think he's suited to playing in a high defensive line at all.

Defoe? Really! And Moutinho? But no Modric and Parker over Sandro?

On the article construct itself, you started well analysing the system then devolved into speculation over transfers. You should've retained an approach talking about the type of player and not specifics within the squad.
