So during these last 5 or so years under Poch we’ve now started regularly competing with the ‘big boys’ at the top table but one thing I wanted to get people’s thoughts on is how much of a difference does the prestige and status of consistently being at the top and winning then also help your club to win in the big games.

For example last season we outplayed Juventus over two legs but went out and Cheilenni said “this is the history of Tottenham” meaning that we don’t have the prestige and pedigree of a Juventus and that the players manager fans and club lacked that experience and winning mentality to get over the line.

This season we have done incredibly to get to the semi final of the Champions League and we are still hanging in there with a shot of getting to the final but again how much is the prestige and history of Ajax playing a part in the semi final? Sure they have a very talented team but with all our players fit I’d argue player for player we have a better first XI but the media are making out like they are some godlike team and I think this is in part due to their history and the narrative that this is another Ajax golden era, whereas because aside from 60/61 we’ve not really had a golden era team so those comparisons can not be drawn to past Tottenham teams.

Many pundits who said winning the first trophy is the hardest but after that they come quickly, so to what extent is our lack of prestige, pedigree and past success holding us back perhaps even subconsciously as a club?

We have to win in Europe or the league it's that simple. Not only will it help with the media, sponsors and overseas support but I think it has a physcological effect on the club as Chiellini pointed out. Its high unlikely Liverpool would have got to the last two champions league finals without the weight of history behind them imo

in every country in Europe most leagues top divisions are usually dominated by 2-4 clubs, and have done for ever. those clubs become the richest clubs in their leagues, and pick up the best young talents because kids want to play for them.

they dominate their leagues, and usually win the league constantly and pick up there cups using back up squads until the later rounds which builds that winning mentality very early on. there isn't many countries out there you would find "A Leicester" type result.

the trouble with us was at the time when the face of football changed we was skint and in the wrong zone to compete, and started to catch up at a time we started to build the stadium. we are in the most competitive league in the world, we have 2 clubs owned by owners that have holes in their pockets, and makes it so hard to be able to get close to the finishing line.

Spot on this is why I think when Poch references ‘reality’ he’s not just talking about our current resources vs the other top6, but also he’s referencing our history compared to some of the other clubs we are competing with like Liverpool, Man.U etc. Getting our first major trophy is so so difficult but also it will be a catalyst I think.

all we can hope for now we have a stadium that will be bringing in revenues that make the old WHL look so silly, and either ENIC eventually go those several steps up to make us great. it's either that or if ENIC do sell we will need someone in that wants to buy success. myself I hope it's the former just to shut the moaners up, and to make people realise we have done it the right way.

the downside might have to be a few years of guaranteeing top 4 ahead of cups, but if the end result makes Tottenham Hotspur FC a great and successful club for the future even if I'm watching from the clouds then so be it. if we where talking pre PL, CL, and everything money and that never happened then by now I'd of expected us to of gained more trophies, and would of been just as angry if we had gone this length of time without winning one.

It only holds you back if you let it. Porto and Marseille have won the CL. No reason we can’t.
