So during these last 5 or so years under Poch we’ve now started regularly competing with the ‘big boys’ at the top table but one thing I wanted to get people’s thoughts on is how much of a difference does the prestige and status of consistently being at the top and winning then also help your club to win in the big games.
For example last season we outplayed Juventus over two legs but went out and Cheilenni said “this is the history of Tottenham” meaning that we don’t have the prestige and pedigree of a Juventus and that the players manager fans and club lacked that experience and winning mentality to get over the line.
This season we have done incredibly to get to the semi final of the Champions League and we are still hanging in there with a shot of getting to the final but again how much is the prestige and history of Ajax playing a part in the semi final? Sure they have a very talented team but with all our players fit I’d argue player for player we have a better first XI but the media are making out like they are some godlike team and I think this is in part due to their history and the narrative that this is another Ajax golden era, whereas because aside from 60/61 we’ve not really had a golden era team so those comparisons can not be drawn to past Tottenham teams.
Many pundits who said winning the first trophy is the hardest but after that they come quickly, so to what extent is our lack of prestige, pedigree and past success holding us back perhaps even subconsciously as a club?
