After being left “disappointed” by another transfer window without any arrivals at Tottenham Hotspur, Mauricio Pochettino says his team are not equipped to be genuine contenders to win the Premier League but will do their utmost to make their unrealistic title dream come true.

This makes no sense. Levy has attempted to back him this window.
Poch has refused all of it and then comes out with this.

So weird.

Fucking hell I thought I'd never see the day when Janssen was welcomed back, things are really desperate. Having said that I hope Vince does well.

Hmm, I see it differently. Poch was very strong in saying there was no way back for Janssen barely a week ago. Ultimately it was Levy's job to get him out and get in a replacement. Neither happened so looks to me like the manager has been undermined. This quote in particular caught my attention:

For different reasons he can’t go. Reasons that are difficult to understand for me. He cannot agree with the club or the club with him to find a place for him to play and be happy.

Back him with what and who though?

This term 'backing' needs to be clarified, if Levy is offering targets which won't improve the squad then there's little point taking them.

But that's a debate for another thread.....

Yeah, it would be interesting to know how much input Poch is getting in all this.

I agree with you, I think Poch only now wants a top player, not another squad player and I agree. No point getting someone in to only have to shift them in the end. The aim until that time is top 4. All of us need to chill, put the handbags away and enjoy the ride. Once we are in the stadium with a few seasons under our belt...that is our time to push.

Guys its happening, just not yet...

Poch won't hang around much longer.

I agree he won’t IMO, he has slightly irritated me of late. Of course I hope he stays but he attitude and talk has changed somewhat over the last season and a half.

Levy: "I can't sell VJ. Play him to score a goal or two pls."
Poch: "Fuck you. Okay"

Levy: Pocky.....?
Poch: yes?
Levy: Pocky.......Pocky........Pocky?
Poch: What Daniel? I berry berry busy! Cleaning up shit you left me with.
Levy: You know that Ju Ju shit you pulled with Sissoko.....Do it one more time for me? Pwitty pweeeeeese... do it on Vincent.
Poch: And then I get the best players?
Levy: (fingers crossed behind his back) for real this time. You know how money and shit has been building the old pussy palace out the back there. 10000% in the summer. I’ll back you. Name the player. And I will try and get him. *Sniggers

I don't think anyone is getting this at all.

Pochettino does not buy players to address short term problems . He has never done it once and there has been no sign of him changing his policy.

Fans howl for Pochettino to sign players to address short term problems. Then they blame Levy or get bemused when it doesn't happen. But it's not how our manager works. He only signs players when (a) he is happy with their personality and mentality and is confident that they will fit into the squad and be a positive influence and (b) they can improve the long-term development of the club and its first team squad. If there are no such players available at desirable wages and fees, he sits tight.

We get the endless conspiracy speculations, but no one settles on Occam's Razor. Pochettino hasn't signed players because there hasn't been anyone whom he thinks represents a good long term investment for the squad.

He's not going to sign players to deal with injury crises. He's not going to sign players to support the current season's campaign. He's not going to sign players because we have a weakness in a specific position. He has confidence in the second-string players and the youth pipeline to cover, until he can find a player who can really improve us. If he cannot find that players,we will sign no one, even if that means we finish third instead of second this season.

This is not an endorsement, nor a recommendation. It's a description of reality.

I agree with all of this. But the ITK does suggest that he wants only the very best players, whom we apparently cannot get. Something has to give, because otherwise we'll keep falling short. I honestly think we need a director of football, because we clearly aren't identifying players that both fit Poch's exacting standards and whom we can actually get.

Can you really blame him though. Still his performing miracles. I think and hope he is highly engaged. You get a sense of authenticity with Poch.

Pochettino is well aware that Spurs can't compete with the "financially doped" clubs or clubs like ManU and Arsenal who've had 20 years of CL to build up their finances. And it's not just about the transfer fees but more about salaries: f.ex. a player like Mesut Özil is on around £350,000 a week.
Pochettino have taken a club that used to be a mid-table team - and a little above - since the 70's to competing with clubs that have 2-3 times bigger budgets. Yet, twice Spurs ended up 2nd and last season 3rd the last 3 seasons.
He's convinced Kane, Son and Dele to sign new contracts despite of them being able to almost triple their salaries elsewhere. And win trophies. And he's improved almost every player he's bought - bare Clinton, N'koudou and Janssen.
Levy is also aware of the fact that unless he risk to upset the "financial health" of Spurs the club cannot compete money wise with the other "top clubs" and he can't blame Pochettino for not winning trophies in the strongest league in the world. Spurs are boxing about their weight.
True, for a club to be considered truly successful it should win trophies - but now a days only the EPL & CL titles are considered "real" achievements. Who really remember domestic cup winners? Qualifying for the CL is far more important than winning a domestic cup now a days. What would have a stronger attraction for a quality target: winning the League cup (sorry I can't bother to google what it's name this year) or qualifying for the CL?
I do have disappointments regarding Pochettino (and yes retrospect is a wonderful thing) and some of them are that Liverpool picked up 3 players who could easily have been acquired by Spurs for a "Levy bargain price": van Dijk, Robertson and Salah.

for at least 24 hours.
We haven't joined the serial money junkies
but we are in the process of beating them.
