Why not though? If I'm a player and my manager is saying that we can win something publicly then I'm going to believe it...all part of having that winning mentality, if you back yourself you start to believe.

Why not?
Because he should be setting them up for every game with this mentality.
Rule #1 win!
It's not something you can switch on imo. It should be in the DNA of the whole group players and coaching team.
As much as it pains me to say it this where Klopp excels

You're contradicting yourself, this is literally what he's saying.

It shouldn't need to be 'said'. IF you are motivating the team correctly.
This is pandering to the "its time Spurs won something" brigade at Sky and the like.
I though think we do lack a certain doggedness and that is worrying as this stems from the manager/coaches as that's his/their first jobs to motivate.
Motivation to win things shouldn't need to be said it is a prerequisite for everybody involved with the club and especially the playing staff.

We must win a trophy is brought up time and again, season after season. It's boring.

There's only 4 trophies (if your teams in Europe) up for grabs each season. Domestically, we really only have a chance at the 2 cups and if the stars are aligned, the manager takes the competitions seriously and puts out first team players we have a chance. You can almost kiss the league goodbye before Xmas if we haven't got off to a flyer, as the Man City's and Liverpool's have far bigger (better) squads and resources to maintain a challenge. CL final last season was an unexpected bonus, but realistically our level is quarter finals at best. I'm happy if we get out of the group stages.

All I want is consistent and attractive performances and we make the best of the young talent available at the club. I really don't want us to be spunking away fortunes of cash on established superstar players chasing the dream.
Im with you on the the "we must win a trophy" or "Tottenham must win a trophy"....its like a Mantra that the pundits trot out time and time again. Fundamentally its poor punditry - an over said cliche. Often it's put across as a piece of wisdom - it drives me mad. There is no 'insight' in the comment.

I agree!

It is why I wouldn't give this rubbish oxygen if I was advising Poch.

That's because you think he's saying it as a motivating tool, he's not - he's clearly setting out the season's objectives and what his expectations are. You think he hasn't told the players to go and win a trophy behind closed doors before? Now he knows that the stadium is built, he's been backed - it's now time to deliver

I really don't understand your stance anyway, before you were saying that you're pragmatic and warning us not to get ahead of ourselves and now you're saying that we should have that winning mentality by default??

Yes to "winning mentality by default" absobloodylutely!!!
We are a top top football team who have consistently 'of late' been in the top 4.

Leave it there. Now let us beat Villa

I like his attitude in the presser saying that for him and the coaching staff also, there are now no excuses to fall back on. That's a winners mentality if ever I heard one.

Poch talking about winning something means more than the old meaning of winning anything. Its about winning as a culture and you have to start somewhere.

I wonder what he meant about the European clubs window though and ours. It could have 2 opposite meanings. He wants to keep Eriksen or maybe he wants someone to come and buy him. Yes its good if Eriksen signs but if he doesn't we get nothing. If he gets sold the money could go to for a player in January

Agree, but that is exactly the point. Up until now what we’re always hearing from Poch is we need to compete, but we’re punching above our weight etc etc. And whilst that may be true and I totally understand why he’s done it ( he’s a smart guy and wants to take the pressure off both himself and the team), imo that kind of mentality can subconsciously get in the players heads. It gives them a kind of get out. They want to win obviously, but it’s not really expected of them.

If you listen to players of our other top six rivals talk it’s clear they are at clubs that are expected to deliver trophies. Of course not everyone can win, but they feel if they don’t it’s not good enough.

It’s not easy, but we need to start to adopt this type of mentality.

We do need to win trophies. If you went five years as a footballer without a trophy + felt you were near the top of your game you would be massively disappointed.

Now is the time to make it very clear to the players they’re needed. It’s not boring. The stadium is done. Big investment has been made and it’s what all big clubs are measured on.

It’s not a media agenda, it’s a reality.
