Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham must win a trophy this season for it to be considered a success.

Pochettino has delivered four consecutive top-four finishes in the Premier League without Spurs spending as much money as their rivals, but his lack of silverware is often highlighted.

He says it’s about him and not putting pressure on the club to win a trophy, but I think he should be and I’m glad he’s said it and brought it out in the open.

Progressing and punching above our weight is commendable, but I think the players should be pressured to deliver. It breeds the culture of winning, rather than just valiant effort.

We must win a trophy is brought up time and again, season after season. It's boring.

There's only 4 trophies (if your teams in Europe) up for grabs each season. Domestically, we really only have a chance at the 2 cups and if the stars are aligned, the manager takes the competitions seriously and puts out first team players we have a chance. You can almost kiss the league goodbye before Xmas if we haven't got off to a flyer, as the Man City's and Liverpool's have far bigger (better) squads and resources to maintain a challenge. CL final last season was an unexpected bonus, but realistically our level is quarter finals at best. I'm happy if we get out of the group stages.

All I want is consistent and attractive performances and we make the best of the young talent available at the club. I really don't want us to be spunking away fortunes of cash on established superstar players chasing the dream.

That's fair enough - that's your own personal view on what you see as a benchmark of success. The manager and many fans would agree about wanting to see consistent and attractive performances but also see lifting a trophy as a benchmark of success. The article never mentioned Poch having to spend loads of money to achieve that.

If the club has the cash to be ‘spunking away’, then great! We need established players to compete with Pool and Citeh. We know that the club run a business first policy, so they’re not going to bankrupt themselves, it’s not your personal money, so what do you care!

I know it's not my money and I'm thrilled when we spend a large amount on a supposed quality player who could help us get to the next level (and hopefully get that elusive trophy). But as you say, we're not going to bankrupt ourselves. I don't want us to over-stretch ourselves financially and end up in a downward spiral like some clubs have in the past. Slowly slowly in my eyes. Sustainable investment to grow in the future.

BTW, I really do think we've got a very good chance of challenging for the league this season - so much so, that I've backed us in my Lucky 15 @ 18/1 :woot:

Agreed. It's called having ambition, not being content with qualifying for the CL and pretty football.

Yeah but it can't be small time silverware. League and CL double has to be bare minimum.

Well, we might as well win the FA and League cups too - it would give them prestige.
Of course, That's why i said as a minimum. Don't want to put the lads under any undue pressure. Everyone team can have one or two bad games...but no more. :)

does this mean we weren't bothering over the past 60 years?

its media-driven bollocks

One would hope we ALWAYS try to win every competition we are in!

You under estimate us massively, we have a great chance of challenging for the league this year, we can compete now due to our squad.

Steve change your mentality, the manager is talking us up which means he believes - it's about time the fans started to follow suit.

Why does he need ”to talk things up”? We are a top club with fantastic facilities and we have just spent a small fortune on new player!

I'm pragmatic, hope we win all the competitions we enter!

Why not though? If I'm a player and my manager is saying that we can win something publicly then I'm going to believe it...all part of having that winning mentality, if you back yourself you start to believe.
