Poch: Trophy only a matter of time

A matter of time, indeed, however it strikes me that when it comes to trophies he downplays everyone, except the league & champions league. This is one of a number of bug-bears that I have with the Poch.

Year after year expenditures on transfers & wages increases at an alarming rate. The ability to win a league &/or champions league title becomes that little bit harder, juxtapose that with our very tightly run ship you reach a certain impasse regarding how we bridge that gap from nearly men to actual winners.

The cups then become a solid way to keep success ticking over as you build toward the bigger aforementioned prizes. The winning of cups also lays a good foundation for players to get used to winning & more importantly thirst for more.

League & continental successes have always been the ultimate prizes, however, real winners want to win everything & considering that the Poch hasn't won anything, whereas the outgoing, Arsene Wenger has won the FA Cup in consecutive seasons since the 13/14 campaign. I wish he'd put more value on trying to win as much as possible.

If he'd have not expected us to go ahead and win the CL (for some reason I can't yet figure out) and not shat on the domestic cups, to that end, devaluing them (which translated to the players), we may well have faired better in both.

We can't go struttin' around like billy big bollocks until we actually win something/things.

I'm all for talking up the team, but in no way agree with talking cups down, especially when we're desperate for any sort of silverware to build off of.

Poch thoroughly pissed me off with that, and I'm still fucked off with him for it.

Priority has been establishing ourselves as one of the big boys so we can attract the best players and pay the big wages.

In order to do that we needed:
  • Bigger ground ✅
  • Regular Champions League football ✅
I’m in no doubt that we will win trophies over the next 10 years but it’s ridiculous to hammer the club for failing to win trophies over the past 10 years when we’ve not had those foundations / players and been competing against massive teams who can spend over double the amount on wages.

We now have a team that is competitive and once the new stadium money starts coming in we’ll be able to offer competitive wages too (which we can’t at the moment).

We arent going to compete with Man U Chelsea or City on wages due to the new stadium!
If we offer a top player 300k a week they'll offer 400k.
At the moment its going to be us Arsenal and Liverpool pulling away from the rest and counting on one of those 3 big spenders having a poor season caused by mismanagement or players sulking.
I live in hope that the money pulls out of Chelsea and City. Or some sugar daddy buys us.

Play your best players in a semi finalx2 that might help.
We are letting one of the best cb in Europe go because he wants big wages with the club having Record gate receipts, record tv money, record sponsorship ,record amount of STH.
Leceister have won more than spurs this century,,just saying.

Good post and agree for the most part.
Just that last paragraph. How long we keep these players remains to be seen.
I think Poch needs to really concentrate on silverware, and I mean realistic silverware, next season. Aim high by all means but be realistic.
Trouble is you need a lot of luck. Look at Liverpools cl fixtures, pathetic.
Our fa cup run was a joke and yet we still blew it.
Still pissed off

I disagree, we have had the money from the sale of Bale to have “those players” already here. Our use of the £90m received has been appalling; an abject failure on the poor return of player quality. Only Eriksen at a steal £11m has proven good enough to make a difference. Yes, a bigger ground and regular CL football are pluses, but to deliver what we all want (trophies) we must make better choices from the funds we accrue on the field.

But we're unable to attract players at the top level of the game as we don’t offer the wages needed. There’s a reason we’re not in the conversation to sign players like Pogba, Griezmann, Lewandowski, Mertens, etc...

We currently shop in the ‘potential’ basket rather than the ‘top of their game’ basket. Which is why for every Eriksen there’s a Paulinho, for every Alli there’s a Holtby and for every Sanchez there’s a Fazio...

The only way to change the type of player we can attract is to establish ourselves as a regular CL team and to increase our income so we can afford the higher wages needed to sign them.

Pochettino wasn't around when all that money was spent and that amount now wouldn't buy a lot. We may have spent lots of money, but there was no solid basis to the club. Winning cups is less important than changing the laughable mentality that has been there for decades.

You don’t need to pay a big fat fee to attract quality players, Eriksen, Mahrez and no doubt others prove that. We revamped our scouting system because it failed big time not doing our research well enough and wasting money over and over again. We need that to change.
