Tom Carroll is on song as Spurs stay on the Wembley trail – are you watching Roy Hodgson?

WITH today’s news that Jack Wilshere will be out until March, at the earliest, England boss Roy Hodgson could do worse than turn to Tom Carroll as almost a like-for-like replacement.

The Tottenham midfielder was head and shoulders above anyone on the pitch as the North Londoners cruised into round five of the FA Cup at Colchester.

Carroll dictated the play from his central midfield position, and deservedly got himself on the score sheet with Spurs’ fourth goal late in the game.

I was intrigued to read a description of a player, who is finally starting to establish himself at the Lane after a series of loan spells, on Wikipedia. It read…

‘He plays as a deep-lying creative central midfielder, and is particularly valued for his high passing percentage accuracy and creativity. His style of play has drawn comparisons with former team mate Luka Modrić."

I can also see a touch of Wilshere in his play and in that magic wand of a left foot which bamboozled and baffled endless Colchester players in a man of the match performance earlier today.

An England Under 21 international with 17 caps to his name at that level, Carroll is beginning to show that he is ready to step up to the next level.

Given Arsenal midfielder Wilshere’s continued injury problems, he could prove to be a Godsend for Hodgson as he weighs up his likely squad for the European Championship finals.

Pochettino is full of praise for the way the 23-year-old Carroll has developed this season – and Hodgson cannot fail to have been impressed either.

England international Wilshere, meanwhile, has not played this season after fracturing his left fibula in August.

The 24-year-old was initially expected to be out for three months. “Jack is starting to run,” said Arsene Wenger. “Once you move outside, from the first day you count six weeks to be competitive and build up stamina.”

After today’s 4-1 win at the Colchester Community Stadium, Spurs boss Pochettino said of Carroll: “He is making more and more of an impact with every game he plays.”

As for the game, Pochettino said on the BBC sport website: “The win means a lot. We showed respect for our opponents, we knew all about Colchester because the competition is magic and we needed to be very focused.

“In the first 12-15 minutes we created a lot of chances but it was difficult to score. Maybe we invited them to believe a little but always the game was under control and it was a fair result.”

Colchester manager Kevin Keen added: “It was a good performance. I’m proud of the players, especially after the start we had, playing with 10 men for however many minutes it was. I can’t say the result wasn’t fair.

“Tottenham thoroughly deserved it but I’ve got nothing but admiration for the way my players had a go. There were a couple of nearly moments, but you’ve got to make those count.”

Who wrote this piece, his Biographer? I stopped taking it seriously after he said he dictated the game today

Very well taken goal today...

Making himself part of this squad and I am happy for this as its based on endevour and merit, he deserves this

Has he signed a new contract? Pretty sure it was due to expire this season?

He comes alive around the box, he could become great little number 10. He's always been able to thread a ball and has ridiculous vision, but this season he's showing he can get goals too.

Totally agree, it would mean him replacing eriksen....but I'm ok with that. For those that don't know Carroll was a striker to begin with and far out scored Kane at youth level before he was earmarked as far too talented to be up top.

Not my first name on the team sheet, but he's one of those players that every top team needs - willing to bide his time on the bench, and able to put in a serviceable shift in the right situation...sometimes even being one of the top players on the pitch.

With so many games and competitions for a club like ours, players like Little Tommy Carrol are absolutely vital. And that he came through our academy makes it all the better.

It's a problem with quite a few of our young players, they have quality players in front of them who aren't exactly old themselves. I think Carroll could play no 10 or even offer lamela competition from the right, they have quite similar skill sets.

I thought Carroll was awful in the academy until he was moved to CM and turned into a good player suddenly? Is that someone else I'm thinking of?

I've often wondered if Poch has tried him there in training. Old habits die hard.

Certainly can finish extremely well. His 2 goals prior to todays were both excellent goals. Todays was a strike that many a potent striker would have struggled with due to the awkward bounce....seeing it from the right linesman position you can see how difficult that was, but no problems adjusted late and a very very good finish. Might look a bog standard finish until you see the bounce...

I should add that he started that move with an excellent tight pass to Chadli? and then had the nous to make that hooked run to finish....high quality stuff, but hes just average and doesnt warrant a first team place does he? ;)
