Regardless of age, Verts should get a long term deal...our best defender and I’m sure a role model for many players at the club.

Yeah I’d hope we sign Verts up tbh as sounds like he is keen to stay.

With the right conditioning centre backs can go on.

It’s always good to have an experienced CB in the team/squad... remember Naybet being a very good player still in his latter years. City had the same with Kompany, influential both on and off the pitch.

Definitely, no reason why he can’t be first choice for another 2-3 year...although I think he would like to end his career at Ajax I’d love it if he was to get a coaching role with us.

Spot on with Naybet...remember him being such a calming influence on the team. Experience like that can be invaluable, Davids was the same alongside Carrick...imo anyway.

Massive if he’s staying. Great defender, and means he won’t be going to a rival. If him and MoPo have patched things up then happy days.

Even if just for one more season, I don’t think I’m ready to see the break up of Toby and Jan.

That said, I think they should each sacrifice 12/13 league starts for Sanchez, means that they keep fresh in the league but also that he gets 2/3 of a league season under his belt too, as he really needs regular starts at this point,

Best case scenario. There are plenty of games where both Sanchez and Foyth should get a decent amount of games to continue their development. Everyone acts like Sanchez hardly played last year yet he featured in 37 games last year compared to 41 the year before. He's getting plenty of time.

He said something the other day about being picked as captain, and how that shows what the manager thought of him. Could be a turning point.

Hope so. Can’t stress enough how pivotal the futures of both Toby and Eriksen are to this transfer window.

Despite things seemingly going well with incoming transfer dealings I can’t really feel the full optimism until I know whether they are staying or not.

Doesn't matter if he goes on a free next year (although I hope he stays longer); we paid peanuts for him and have more than had our value out of him. Having him for next season would be awesome.

It’s so important, especially if we are to be experimenting in the fullback positions. Can’t afford to weaken ourselves at CB as well.

I have this crazy feeling that somehow he might even stay with us beyond this year.

I keep thinking he might sign a 1 year extension next year, before going for a final payday somewhere or back to Ajax.

Even if this was true it’s pretty pointless, nobody came in at £25m and a guarantee of no negotiations with Levy so why would they bother now
I bet they did.

I think there have probably been plenty of chancers and time wasters enquiring; DL's basically putting them on notice, pay the clause or expect a £40 million+ price tag to be placed on any enquiries for him after the deadline passes. "your move dickheads"

Just my opinion though. :censored:

Thanks for the update, @Hercules - can you elaborate on what you mean when you say Toby's reasons are 'genuine?'

Not sure if that means he's had a change of heart or if he's decided to stay so he can just go where he wants next season...or even something else.

Thanks!

I don't know about anyone else, but when I saw Toby was made captain the other day, it was clear to me that he's very likely to stay. Moreover, any issues between him and Poch must be water under the bridge. Otherwise, it would make ZERO sense to give him the armband.

I'd be absolutely delighted if he stays. Gives us another season of having a world class CB, and allows more time for the likes of Foyth and Sanchez to develop. Not to mention, if Dier is moved to CB this season, he too would have time to develop before Toby (and likely Jan too) leave before the 2020/21 season.

Toby was very good last year. Extremely reliable, and committed to the cause. Without him, I truly believe we would have lost quite a few more games.

If our other transfer targets come to fruition, and Eriksen stays too.... well, I don't know how that can be seen as anything other than a resoundingly successful transfer window.

I can’t see him signing a new deal. I think he would have done so by now and the only reason I can think why no one has activated his clause is due to the wages he’s demanding, because £25m is well below market value.

And if other clubs won’t pay him what he wants then we certainly won’t.

Think he's a brilliant defender, for 25 million we'd be having a mass breakdown at that price. If he goes for that whoever gets him is getting a bargain. If he wants to run his contact down to leave on a free then I'm all for that weirdly enough. Would rather he stayed this season and fuck the cash as he'll be a very important player for us yet again.

I don't really understand why no team wants him for 25m. And Roma even don't want to match that clause!
