I think some old ITK from last season when Toby wasn't playing. But obviously isn't always correct so a pinch of salt needed to begin with. And things do appear to have changed - Toby is now playing very regularly so you have to imagine things are at least okay between him and Poch now.
Yeah, that was my thinking - why would he play someone who he has that much of an issue with.

I have this thought in my mind, which I want to run up the flagpole (not directly for you to answer Saoirse if you don't want):

Say a club come in for Toby. They offer him a contract. There's nothing stopping us from matching it, right?

So, with that possibility, could the club just be playing a waiting game? Seeing what others offer him and then matching (or even bettering it) the offer? Does that fall within the realms of possibility?

Maybe? I'm sure we'd have offerred him something pretty good earlier though which he must have rejected, because I don't see the point for us in waiting. In all likelihood when he's available so far below market value at £25m multiple clubs will make offers, so he'll have a lot of negotiating power on his contract with them. Wouldn't be at all surprised for him to get offerred £250k-£300k per week which I doubt we can match yet alone better.

He’d get a massive signing fee at another club, not sure we’d give him that.

I had this thought myself, risky but possible. If none of the real elite come in and say Arsenal/Inter offer £160k a week, you'd think it'd be a no-brainer for him to stay here for the same amount if we were willing to offer it. The £25m fee is significant when it comes to the wages that he gets offered, that's £120k a week over a 4 year deal, so I can't imagine anyone offering him more than VVD's 180k.

Definitely something to be said for Poch playing him ahead of Sanchez the last few months, especially in crunch games. Much different to last season. I'm hoping things between him and Poch have improved but JJ certainly intimated it would be hard to reconcile.

The only ones doing any waiting are Alderweireld and his entourage. On the field he's getting on with the job, which is at least something (though for his future career this does benefit him...), and I think Poch has decided that we may as well use what is clearly our best centre back partnership for the time it's available, but it's abundantly clear that they have had a plan in mind to wait and have control towards the end of his contract.

He's never had any intention of committing to a new contract. They're waiting to see what is the best offer they can get - football and financial wise.

The only way he is playing for us next season is if a) these offers don't materialise, and then b) the club/Poch let it go and allow him to come back tail between legs.

But that's the point that's running round my head - if we were to offer him as good a contract as anyone else, would that be enough to convince him to stay?

I'm not a businessman by any stretch of the imagination, but if (and I stress the 'if') there's something that I'd be glad to have and the opportunity exists for me to get it if I wait a little while, is that an unrealistic thing to do?

If one of Europe's elite teams offers him a contract we can match, but also with a strong possibility of adding league trophies to his collection, it would be crazy for him to stay. If none of Barca/Real/Bayern/Juve/PSG/Man City come calling, he might be persuaded to stay.

But £25m for one of the world's best centre backs, I don't see them all staying away.

Doubt it. If a mega club offers near-guaranteed trophies and say a wage of 200k plus a week (with scope to go further) with a nice big signing bonus on top, any offer we make would have to be over and above that and I don't see it happening.

You're also forgetting any sign on bonus he could get, he's a £70m defender and he could get anything between 10-20m, even if we offered the same wages I doubt we would offer anything close to that.

The passion this guy shows on the pitch. I find it very hard to believe that a deal isn't possible.

Toby could go down as a club legend, losing him and Jan would be unforgivable. He's a fucking rolls Royce.

Best Aguero stopper on the planet, can't do more than that. Huge props to Jan though, he found himself 1v1 vs Aguero couple of times and did well too.

Never been more confused about a Spurs situation than I am by Toby. Massive hug between him and Poch again tonight. Fuck knows.

They hugged after the game, but there was something different in Poch's embrace compared to the other players. They avoided eye contact, and he quickly moved away. Maybe my imagination but I think here is something there unfortunately. Still desperate for Toby to stay though.

Maybe Toby had smellier pits than the others after running about so much and Poch wanted to get away from the BO asap?
