Something odd here, 25 mill is a steal. If he is signing a new contract thats great news...but I dont see why clubs that want him now would not pay the 25mill and wait another season to get him for free.
He will be wanting massive wages. That's the issue for buyers, not the release clause.

This saga gets more and more confusing by the day.

Fully agree. The itk insight implies he and the management have a frosty at best relationship. Why make him captain? Could have given it to Dele or Winks to show some commitment to the youth of the team. Don’t get me wrong, no one would be happier than me if Toby stayed but it seems a strange move given the narrative.

Anyway, game time. COYS!

Really hope he stays. We can’t afford so many defensive changes in one window.

Sort the midfield out this window and then concentrate on other areas next summer. Hopefully offer Verts a new contract too.

The thing is, it isnt like he is 36 and about to drop dead. He is definitely deserving of high wages for the next two or three years

The guy has been injury free now for a fair while, he isnt losing it... the guy is damn good and what a pro. Id keep him.

Of all the transfer threads talked about this summer, I feel like this one is just as important as any of them.

I know it's bordering on sacrilege to put anyone on a par with Ledley in here, but for me, Toby has been an absolute rock from the minute he came in to the club.

There is the notorious behind the scenes situation going on for a long time now, so obviously those in the club know better than myself why he is allegedly being pushed out. But if it came simply down to footballing reasons, this bloke deserves a massive contract and it absolutely amazes me that nobody, seemingly, has been majorly in for him. He has acted like a complete pro throughout on the pitch, and I for one, will be seriously sad to see him go. I just hope we keep him and things get resolved.

All the talk of burnt bridges and frosty relationships and making an example of him make me laugh. If the management hated him we wouldn't be playing him at all. They might be dissapointed in him but I'd say we areore likely selling before he declines and trying to get maximum value as we have with rose. It's also worth noting vertonghen hasn't been given a new contract and he is a similar age. Vertonghen has been calling for one for a while and still hasn't had one.

Id say this is new club policy and not necessarily shit housing him.

Agreed on both counts. Lets not forget Poch has precedence for players who do not feature in his plans or have disrespected him - just look at Townsend.

I think he will stay (maybe its hope more than expectation)

Maybe he and the club are happy to just let the contract expire .
Another season out of him in his prime probably worth 25 million

Staying ain’t he

It’s so strange because whatever he did to piss off Poch and co was obviously really out of order, but at the same time I can’t remember a player in his position carrying themselves (take many others, even our own Eriksen as an example) as professionally as he has. Seems to be absolutely impeccably behaved and the model pro.

Or more, it makes no sense to match another club's wage offer when it 'costs' us an extra 25m.

Once that clause expires, we have the advantage of a year extra wage improvement above any other offers coming in in a season's time.

Hope he stays. Regardless of what has or hasn’t happened, on the pitch he’s been absolutely superb; he, Jan and Ledley are the best by far of my time supporting spurs - Rolls Royce defenders, all three.

Almost think it’s worth taking the hit losing him on free, of it gives some of our highly rated young CB’s more time to learn from him this coming season, provide us with some sense of stability given the FB’s swaparound.
But then it’s not my money I’m writing off :sneaky:

IMO keeping Toby for a year would most likely result in a net gain of more than the 25m we'd get if we sold him. However, the fact remains that ITK (the best ones) are adamant that Poch wants him out for whatever reasons. Baffles me, but there it is.
