That seems to have come out of no where though, first time I have seen Spurs name linked to him ... Odd.

There’s absolutely zero reason for Toby to accept any offer from United this summer. In the short term (next season), we’re a more attractive prospect, and in the long term he has far more options by seeing out the last year of his contract with us and weighing up his options next summer. With so many doubts over United atm, he’d be stupid to commit to them for the next 3+ years when he can see who comes in next summer.

An extra £100k+ a week at for a 30 year old is a pretty good reason.

Pretty much

If they offer him 'his last big payday', then he'd have to take it

4 years on big money, then 'retire' to Ajax or Belgium for a couple of years

That said, if he wants to win trophies he's got a better chance of doing it with us, rather than the shambolic United

If that story is true, including the loan-back, it does seem to imply Toby planning to run down his contract - if he was off this window I think we would want someone in now.

They're probably leaking our name to get Arsenal to pay up. Mind you, I'm not sure I see us or them paying 30 million euros for a player, then loaning him back there for a season.
I don't have the first clue who this player is if I am honest and the first thing I think, personally, when this sort of link appears feels like Spurs being used as the football fluffer we have become over the years.

Interesting to see if there is in fact anything in this.

Re Ali Z, So basically Ndombele, Clark, & the Sessegnon’s. Everything else depends on outgoings and so far it seems like none are really close. Have I got that tight?

I’m fine with keeping Toby if what he says is the case. But i cant imagine nobody comes in for him. It’s £25m. For a player like Toby, that is an insanely good price. Someone will come in for him eventually. Just hope it isnt an English club.

@yankspurs replying in the Toby thread, so as not to sidetrack the Daily ITK.

I think the lack of movement for an elite CB for a give away price, is probably down to the player and agent are telling clubs not to bother bidding, as that they intend to wind down the contract and secure a big pay day.

Just a theory, but would explain the ITK rumoured rift with Poch, and how bizarre it is that City and United would rather spend £80m on Maguire who isn't fit to lace Toby's boots.

IF that's the case, imo it would be a total cluster f*ck from the agent, trying to make up for the 2-3 years lost earnings on low wages since messing around on his contract renewal, and subjecting his career to 3 peak years of uncertainty.

Is he going to make up significantly £15-20m more in his next offer than he wold have earned at Spurs over the whole stretch, in order to break even?

It's a risky strategy if you can call it that, and is it worth the hassle to de-stabilise your career like that?

I think Toby isn't seen as a particularly attractive signing. He's no longer a young player, if his representitives are hard for us to deal with it would be the same for other clubs. Maguire is home grown and will improve and learn, Toby wont. Though you would expect an offer abroad. He isn't really rated in, say, Spain.

I agree, i think he stays for another season tbh but can see why as he'll get more money going on a free with a signing on bonus and a 5 year contract on at least what we had offered
.

<Replied in player thread>

Agree with @C0YS I think Toby's very unlikely to get 5 years at age 30, unless he goes to China.

Even the biggest clubs now are reluctant to offer long contracts and pay big fees on players over 30, and whether Signing on fee or Transfer fee - it all needs to be written down on the balance sheet.

Even the big clubs now would rather younger players with a longer write down, and potential for a sell on fee, or growth in value.

So I'm not sure a Juve or City would come in with the £20m and 5 years at £175k p/w to be well ahead overall on the last 8 years of his career. He will have missed out on £10-15m at Spurs in his last 3 years by not renewing.

There's also always the risk of getting a big injury in his last year, as happened to Zlatan, and Toby himself last year - which could weaken his hand quite significantly.
