Toby is obviously a fantastic defender.

He has made mistakes recently. He lost his man for the goal against West Ham. Yesterday King lost him for a good chance early on and then King rinsed him forcing him to take a booking. We all know what happened next.

The point of this is not to murder him. It’s to say that experienced, quality defenders will make mistakes that lead to goals. When we look at Sanchez and Foyth we pick holes in their game in a way Toby isn’t subjected to. If anything it should be the opposite - we should be more accepting of their mistakes because Toby has 10 years on them.

After seeing how bad lovren was last night, I’ve a terrible feeling he will end up at Liverpool. His agent should be trying to get him a move to Man City though, he’d get in their first team.

I think Toby is a great defender but he was shown up badly yesterday for his lack of pace.

Our main hope is that Alderweireld's dad insists on the same non standard clauses in his contract at a new club. Or that they don't offer him a very long contract.
We agreed to his terms as he was an affordable defender that could take us to the next level, especially paired with his old partner Vertonghen.
His next potential club might not be as tolerant, and we know Toby will stand his ground..

If there is a big falling out between them, something personal for example, then you have to salute both. Manager for continuing to pick him and player for performing. Normally these things result in giant stroppiness and a player on strike.

Danny Mills has claimed Toby Alderweireld could make a “shock U-turn” and stay at Tottenham if they win the Champions League this season.

The Belgium international has a year remaining on his contract but talks over a long-term extension collapsed last year and he is in line to quit Spurs this summer if a club trigger his £26million release clause.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Mills explained how Spurs fans still have realistic hope of one of their most influential players and a big fans favourite remaining beyond the transfer window

“Alderweireld is expected to go, but there could be a shock U-turn if they win the Champions League,” he said. “Players change their minds. If you are a Champions League winner, where is better?

“If the club says, ‘here is more money’ and they can come to an agreement over wages, why not?

“Certainly, Alderweireld is a top-class centre-back who Spurs would not want to lose. He is still fairly young and can be a big player for plenty of years.”

The Belgian turned 30 in March and has a wealth of international, Champions League and Premier League experience.

Alderweireld, who joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid in 2015 for £13million, has 90 Belgium caps and has accumulated 157 appearances for Spurs in his four seasons at the club.

He has been a mainstay of the starting XI this season and has played the full 90 minutes of 11 of their 12 Champions League fixtures en route to the final.

Said it before in this thread or another - if Poch wants to bin him then that's one thing. But if another club wants to sign him this summer then (on realistically no more than a 3 year contract, maybe only 2, with negligible resale value) then they would need to cover the £25m = £8.3 per season (approx 180k pw) plus give him a contract substantially better than we can offer. If we offered 150k pw then that implies another club effectively paying him towards 400k pw (e.g. 200k offer + the 180k pw fee)

Not saying it won't happen but ask yourself who is going to pay that

Have to say, regardless of what may or may not have gone on with Toby behind the scenes he has been 100% committed since returning to the team.

Attitude has been first class.
