If I were Liverpool, I’d pay £25m for Toby in the summer and then partner him with van Dyke.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they targeted him as he’s an upgrade on Lovren, can pay him the wages he wants and are at present, more ambitious than us.

I’d hate for him to go but £25m is peanuts for him and I think he’s only 29 so good few years left in him.

You need to take yourself off to the naughty step for a time-out. :sneaky:(y)

Haven’t been paying much attention to the clause etc but if 5 clubs come in with a £25M bid, can he choose which one he wants to go to? Or do we have any control whatsoever over where he goes? Also, can we refuse the bid so he goes on a free the following year?

Not that simple. They still have to pay him upwards of £150k per week as that is what he wants. From info received it’s seems like he was happy with our terms until VVD moved and he wanted parity or close to what he was being paid, it seemed to go tits up after that. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Are the scousers seriously going to bring Toby in on £150k + per week when it could stifle the development of Joe Gomez who the fans adore and has settled really well alongside VVD??

I don’t see it myself
Well I can unfortunately.

1. Toby is proven and you need additional players to rotate as you well know.
2. This allows them to play a 3 at the back if needed.
3. It weakens us and strengthens them.
4. 150k week is a piece of piss for liverpool to find, on top of only 25m fee.
5. And finally Toby is better than Gomez. End of.

That's why they'll be interested.

I don't think we'll buy a star replacement. I think Sanchez and Foyth will rotate with Jan, and we'll buy someone lesser known.
I agree. IIRC There was ITK when Sanchez was bought that the club didn’t want to buy a CB but did with the knowledge that contract negotiations with Toby had stalled. I think Poch has been playing Foyth to get him use to this level in readiness for the potential departure of Toby.

I find it very strange they he's such a key player for us this season, and yet there's no sign that we're making any attempt to keep him.

That’s awful for us. I can really see him going to Liverpool if the choice was there. I would hate it if he went to Man U but would prefer that to Liverpool. Fingers crossed a Spanish team come in for him if we can’t get him to agree a new contract.

The thought of that is horrifying. Let's hope the clause is only applicable to a foreign team then.

I can see all 5 of our Top6 competitors bidding the 25m

Liverpool, because it gives them strength in depth.
United, their defence is shit.
City, to replace Kompany
Chelsea, because they can.
Scum, because their defence is also Shit and they may see this as another SolScumball moment.

Fuck. I hate the thought of any of the above. Shoot me now.

I’m sure we’ve offered him contracts but it looks like they aren’t good enough

I'd love to know if we're still trying to keep him. It makes absolutely no sense to 'save' money by not paying him what he wants, but then have to replace him with a player who costs a lot more than the £25m we'll get for selling Toby, and will inevitably be on massive wages anyway.

He might just want to leave.

Never say never, but Liverpool operate under a very different model nowadays. Paying a £25m fee and then handing a fairly large contract to a 30 year old isn't really how they operate under their owners FSG.

Not saying it definitely won't happen but would be surprised. If he were to move to a team in the prem, it's more likely to be a Utd, City or Chelsea imo but I think even those 3 would probably look at other options first.

I think any team that wants to buy him will have to pay a pretty hefty signing on fee. In addition the wages will be a decent amount. This on top of the £25m payable over just 2 years amounts to a very sizeable package. It will require a team who are very serious about upgrading their defence.

Where has this Toby to lpool thing come from? Some new ITK? That’d be so shit, I’d rather he went to man.u tbh. Anyway fuck him he’s 29 and we have Sanchez and foyth as well as Dier it he comes to his senses and realised he’s better as a CB, if not then plenty of young CB talent out there, not the end of the world but if possible really hope he goes abroad and we don’t strengthen a rival again.

Not heard that the £25m can be paid over 2 years?

I never realised this thread started at the time of his signing in 2015. Interesting to read the negative comments about him. He’s been pretty decent !
