You'd imagine the master plan is to turn him into a top drawer attacking LB, as that's where his strengths would be best applied.

The worry with him is that he seems very green defensively, you'd expect to have seen some signs of prowess there by now. Wan-Bisakka for example looked defensively sound very early on at a similar age. Hopefully it's something Poch can teach him, he certainly improved Walker and Rose in that respect.

AWB is a very rare case - he's proven himself defensively but it's not clear how good he is going forward. Usually it's the other way round.

He’s obviously a good player. It’s just where does he play and will he be over priced?

He’s not good enough for us as an attacker at the moment and Fulham will want more than we will want to pay, especially as he can be picked up on a tribunal next summer.

People doubting this kid need to remember he has played in the Prem for the first time at 18 in a relegated team under three different managers. And yet he has still shown glimpses. Under the right manager at the right club this lad could certainly develop into something. If it can be done, it should be done.

How does his HG status actually work with us? If we buy an English player from another club that is U-21 he automatically becomes a part of our HQ quota? Because our U-21's don't count currently.

I don't fully know the answer to this. But in the Premier League I believe that 25 players (over 21) can be registered with a maximum of 17 non HG players. Sessegnon is currently under 21 so wouldn't be an issue, until he becomes 21 and joins the 25 man list (counting as HG).

In the CL, you also get a 25 man squad (A list). Of these 17 can be overseas (non HG) with 8 HG players. In this case, the 8 home grown players must contain 4 club grown players (at spurs for 3 years before 21). Unlike the premier league, only under 21s that are club grown, don't have to be included until they are 21. This is why Foyth had to be in the CL squad but not league, as he is under 21 but not club grown. I believe that Sessegnon would therefore have to be included in this 25 man squad, as a home grown but NOT club grown player.

In short...Prem -no worries. CL - yes, as a HG, but not club grown player.

Think he will make an incredible attacking fullback. Really hope we can get him.

Agree. The real difference between us and Liverpool currently is not the respective forward lines, or at CB, or even CM (when Winks and Sissoko are fit, although still need to add real quality in this area).....

It's at full back. Look at the amount of assists Trent and Robertson have, and they can defend. I think they're both one behind Eriksen on assits!!!

Fullback and CM are key areas. And Poch probably sees this kid as perfect to mould into the modern day full back.

I don't mind stats but I prefer the eye test.
With your eyes have you seen anything that's truly impressed you about the boy?

Poch clearly has and that's all I need to know. In addition he has stats that means he has a proven level of capability.

£25m for a HG player with potential is the going rate these days, if he was more proven than he is right now you'd be looking at double that number.

Agreed.

And the glimpses he's shown have sometimes been stunning. He was the one player of theirs who was ever exciting to watch, and most of the time they were incapable of playing well without him. If he had a quiet game, they did nothing. Great control, quick, seems to read the game well, mature for his age and a very brave, positive player who looks like he's able to change the course of a game. He'd have had far more than his 6 assists this season if the rest of the team hadn't been such crap.

I'm impressed with how good he is but too much was expected of such a young kid defensively in what was a very, very poor defence, and a poor team overall.

I really hope we get him.

I think he’s an either or between lb and lw, which is fine because Pochettino likes full backs who attack and wingers who track back.

Also, defending skills are easier to teach than attacking skills (see Rose) as they’re far more about off the ball and timing than about natural ability.

As for HG, he wouldn’t take up on of the 17 foreign slots (obviously) but as he’s past his 18th birthday, he would take up one of the 21 non-club grown slots (Rose, Winks and Kane currently our only club grown non u21s).

I haven't seen the glimpses - and I don't mean, I've watched him play and don't like him, I genuinely don't think I've even seen the highlights of his goals or assists. Been looking but can't find.

This is really helpful. I wonder if he would (eventually) count as Club-Trained for CL purposes if we completed a transfer this summer. He would spend three years at Spurs including the season he turns 21, so I'm not sure if that means he would end up counting as Club-Trained or Association-Trained after his 21st birthday. Would be (slightly) more useful to have him fall under the more restrictive Club-Trained classification.

I was not in favor last summer when the price was being quoted at £50, but £25 feels about right for me. He has a lot of positive traits and is still very young / developing. I'm personally still a little concerned about the murkiness of his position, but I suppose that will work itself out. I think he would be more valuable to the team if he can be taught the defensive side of things and be an attack-minded LB in the mode of Andy Robertson.

For me he'd be a long-term replacement for Rose.

I don't think he's good enough attacking wise to be an out and out wide forward player, IMO he was just made to look a lot better at that side of things than he is when playing against weaker Championship teams IMO. And to be honest, that's not really a position we need someone to play anyway. But he's good enough going forward to be an effective LWB. Obviously there's some questions over his defensive ability but the same could be said of Rose and Walker before Poch got his hands on them and Sessegnon is younger than either of them were when he took over so there's no reason to think we can't improve that side of his game.

All in my most humble of opinions of course :pompous:

Good question was wondering this myself, I believe no he'd remain homegrown as his birthday falls before 1st July 2000.

A "club-trained player" is a player who, between the age of 15 (or the start of the season during which he turns 15) and 21 (or the end of the season during which he turns 21), and irrespective of his nationality and age, has been registered with his current club for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons (i.e. a period starting with the first official match of the relevant national championship and ending with the last official match of that relevant national championship) or of 36 months.

In the context of this paragraph, the season immediately preceding a player’s 15th birthday may be counted if his birthday is after the last match of the relevant national championship but before or on 30 June (winter championships) or 31 December (summer championships), and the season immediately following his 21st birthday may be counted if his birthday is on or after 1 July (winter championships) or 1 January (summer championships) but before the first match of the relevant national championship.

Just to make a point...

Andy Robertson and Harry Maguire were part of a dog shit Hull defence that got relegated.

I bet not a single person on this board would turn their noses up at them now.

I wanted us to get Robertson when Hull went down and am still pissed and flabbergasted that no one at Tottenham seemed to see his potential especially given his price tag. And this was when Rose looked like he had one foot out the door

I don't recall if HOTSPUR RELATED are accurate or not. But that bit about using him as a left winger and then eventually converting him to a left back seems awfully specific.
It’s from a David Ornstein article, it says that’s where we see him in the future

I feel as he must be being signed as an attacking option. Of his 26 starts in the league this season, only 3 were at LB.
