Skipp's gonna be a legend of this football club by the end of his career. Once he physically matures he'll consistently be one of the leading defensive midfielders in the Premier Leagues for years to come.

I really want the guy to do well. It looks like he has a great attitude. But playing devils advocate, is he as good as Guendouzi who is of similar age. Or was he as good as someone like Jamie O’Hara when he first broke through for us? We have to put these things into perspective.

Guendouzi is 17 months older

Charged down the Leicester clearance that lead to Eriksen scoring. Has only played a handful of games so for me it's too early to judge.

I think It saus alot about Poch using our young players AS much AS he does!

We don’t have the best young players as far as I can tell compared to city, chelsea etc... but I wouldn’t be surprised if we are the ones representing the most players coming through in a couple of years and playing in the PL

My goodness.. what is wrong with some of you? Do you fully understand how tough it is for players to make it to the Premier League?

This guy is 18 and more than held his own. So much to learn, so many games to get under his belt but somehow, still being played.

Some of you need to have a word with yourselves.

I don’t think many are writing him off. I think most understand he is just 18 and a lot to learn. However he doesn’t exactly jump out at you and there have been plenty of players at 18 in the PL that have done. Put it this way if I didn’t support Spurs I wouldn’t be looking and thinking wow Spurs have got another diamond there. As said interesting to see how he develops and quite happy to give him a chance. Pochettino is playing him when he doesn’t “have” to, so he must see something.

Guendouzi has also played a full season of men's football, which is massive boost this early on in both of their careers. There's no doubt that MG is very talented but he hasn't done all that much more than keeping it simple so far.

These sort of players take time to fully mature, just look at Kante who was nothing more than an struggling Ligue 2 player until he was 23.

It's just of my opinion that Skipp is gonna to reach Harry Kanesque level of success based off of Oliver's temperament, footballing intelligence and his base technical quality.

And I dont say this about any above average academy player. I dont even feel like I'm going out on that big of a stretch when I talk this way about Skippy.

He could be our Deschamps or Dunga. Win the ball, close space and give the ball quickly.

O'hara was 3 years older when he made his PL debut for us and had 2 seasons of experience out on loan before that.

Guendouzi is over a year older and has played more Ligue 1 & 2 football than Skipp has played U23s. Also, a month ago Guendouzi was being heavily criticized by Arsenal fans in a similar "not ready" manner that Skipp is by our fans.

Yeah possibly, but if anything, you could maybe argue that Winks has taken up the spot that he maybe could have taken. You would think (although we've been thinking it for a while) that we will recruit strongly in the centre of midfield over the summer, so as good as it can be to train with the first team, I still think it would do him better to play week in week out say in the Championship at a certain stage. I don't think it should be underestimated how much playing a strong role in a team can be to a player, regardless of whether that be in the lesser teams of the Premiership or Championship. It could help him grow a lot and that's no shame or insult to his ability by allowing or proposing for him to do so. Training with better players and getting the odd game isn't the only way he can develop.

I see your point & agree to an extent but, as we've seen with so many of our loans, there's still no guarantee the player will see more game time.

Go in the loan thread and see how many times you read... "why the fuck did we even bother sending him there if he's not gonna play? We may as well have just kept him here and given him the odd chance in the first team"...

The lad must be close. I genuinely don't believe Poch would be having him around so much, let alone starting him in pretty vital league games if he wasn't.

Excellent point and for perspective with Skipp, Kante didn't make his first team debut until he was 21.

He might ultimately make it with us, he might not.

But some of these posts are borderline spasticated, really they are.

I know it's a different position but I think Drogba was even older before he made his top fight debut.

Yes I'm too lazy to check :finger:

It's very easy to be nice and safe with every post you make, but it makes for very bland reading.

Sometimes if the moments right and you truly believe in a player you have to be brave with your takes and get off the fence. (y)

Tbh I saw Guendozi in pre season and it was pretty obvious within 15 minutes that he was very decent. Of course other players can be slow burners.

Personally I think he looks scared shitless out there on the pitch. If he receives the ball it's mostly to give it straight back like cushion on a billiard table. He just doesn't have the confidence to turn, look up, pass forward... and it makes me seriously nervous when he plays, knowing that such a key position in the team is not offering enough to help dominate the opposition. We should not forget the leicester result was probably the flukiest two goal margin victory in football ever. We were atrocious and never in control. Had the result been fair not many in here would want Skipp playing again anytime soon.

I also feel when we have possession he hides a bit by not actively seeking space, plus team mates are reluctant to feed it to him.
Maybe he shows something else in training and its a lack of confidence that is obscuring some talent or, perhaps, there isn't much about him other than a willing presser and chaser to be used when the squad is at its bare bones, like right now.

So to summarize, he played like an 18 year old who was getting his 2nd ever premier league start.
